I still need to get the other valve covers on and wire the engine. Other than fluids, its about ready to start up. I have the new harness to convert the existing harness to HEI. The only alteration will be extending the alternator wires since its a LWP system and now on the passenger side. Hoping to get inner fenders and core support in this weekend. Then we'll see what kind of radiator clearance I'm dealing with. The engine is set between the fornt/rear holes on the frame. |

Spent most of the weekend in the yard, but did finish the inner fenders. Went with the 3m black weatherstripping glue for the new seals. Truck bed liner on top and undercoated underneath. The fender closing panels I redid with staples. They are ready for install. Hoping to paint the front end this weekend and get the truck back together.
The blocks of wood are holding a little pressure on the bends. Let it cure overnight and they looked good this a.m. Don't mind the dust on them. Had to mow 2 acres Saturday and the wind was kicking up pretty good, but its not in the finish. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
right-on...they do look good.
i do it the same way, why staple the inner fender to cab seals, they can't go anywhere anyway. sure like that big block... |

Thanks for the compliments.
That was my thinking too. They fit pretty snug against the firewall, so glue was a lot less time consuming. Redoing the staples was very time intensive to make them look good. Pics of the closing panels being done are on post 980, but heres a few pics in case it helps anyone else. |

Then got the inner fenders mocked in. Will paint the core support, radiator support and front fenders this weekend after mock up this week. Starting to come together....much more fun reinstalling parts than all the restoration work and tear down.
So far we are good on all clearance issues. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Its looking very nice! Little by little. :gmc2::chevy:

Finished up the radiator support last night. Spent a couple hours stripping off the 3/8" of asphalt that was adhered to the core pretty good. The surface rust was an easy task and no rot or pinholes. This core support and the radiator support are from a 61 I parted out a few years back , but are in great shape. Always nice using OEM steel!!!! Also nice having a panel that didn't fight me for once.
Heres a before & after pic |

Rcvd a couple PM's about the headers I used. Hedman HTC #69136 2" primaries. I used them with POL tubular mounts. Will require frame trimming for both mounts and headers.

Got the radiator support complete and installed. New gaskets for the inner to radiator support and new attachment kit for the core. Another piece complete!!
Also...pic of the gaskets for the inner fender to radiator support and gaskets for the inner fender to outer fender rails. Not used from the factory, but I will be using them on my builds. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Still a few wet spots in the pics where I did some small touch ups, the finish dried real nice though. I have done the inner fenders and core in bed liner. Drilled some holes for water drainage in the radiator support where they commonly hold water and got the back of grill support lined also. Paint is ordered and I should be able to spray the front end this weekend.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Looking very good. It is coming together. I know what you mean by putting it back together. I know you are on cloud 9.

Yeah, every piece is one more piece closer to done. The bed will probably get painted after the truck is running. Goal for now is to reassemble the front end....just paint left on the fenders, grill support and hood. Fire up the engine and get it running smoothly. New stainless steel brake lines to install front to rear, upgrade to auto adjusters on the rear brakes and driveshaft. The interior work is marginal for whats left. Just need to complete the glass frames for the door glass and install. The vent assemblies are complete and all gaskets and beltline kits are on hand. So shouldn't be too long. (hopefully) |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Nice job on the rad support...looking more and more like a truck again. :chevy:

What a great looking truck!

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Thanks guys....as a 1 man building crew I aim to please. Nice to be able to salvage the original sheetmetal whenever possible. Also trying to fix some issues that we all encounter on the trucks...like places where water collects. Most are easily resolved. The radiator support collects water in the bays next to where they mount on the frame. So a few 1/4" holes and a few coats of bed liner should make sure the support lasts another 50 years. Also I like to fill the voids under the inner fenders where they commonly collect mud and water causing them to rust out. Will do the same for the lower part of the outer front fenders. Prone to rust due to the drainage issues.
This is actually a 61 radiator support and I noticed it has two less mounting points on the lower part of the panel as the original 63 did. I used this as I hope to use an original steel barrel shroud on the build if possible. I will probably have to trim it down to fit the big block, but its coated and waiting on install after radiator is in. |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
your Build it looking mighty fine. Love how your truck is coming Along. one of my new favorite builds that Iv been watching a while.

Anytime man! Sometimes it's the comments people leave that make us get up off the sofa and put a few hours in on these trucks. Hope you can get her done by spring man. That'd be pretty trick to cruise round in it.

I took it off the road in June and it was a daily driver, so definitely looking to get out and drive it again. Every time I see a classic go by it reminds me that mine is blown apart in the driveway. |

I'm in the same boat man. My 65 c20 Used to be my daily driver now it's almost back together. But changed to a k20. Stinks having to look at it everyday and wishing u could drive it...then getting in your actual daily driver. Idk bout anyone else. But my daily is not that cool hah. 92 Toyota is only so much a substitute for the 65 hahaha:lol: |
Re: 1963 C-10 in NC

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC

Couple of pics of the before and after on the 1960 c-10 steel barrel shroud. Was going to use on the fleetside build, but found a real nice shroud out of a 64 to use on the 348 that fit better, so this will go on the big block...if I can make it fit without having to cut 75% of it off.

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Just caught the paint store in time as they are closed tomorrow for Easter. Lucky for me!!!!
Looks like we're spraying this weekend. |

Re: 1963 C-10 in NC
Looking good! I hope you get some smooth paint down with all the control burns and pollen this weekend. Wouldn't want a your truck to turn back to green. LOL I finally got my POL control arms in. They look great. I will have to post some pics. I am hoping to get by next weekend. I am all booked up this weekend.

Got primer and paint done on core support and front fenders. Test fit everything last nice and drilled additional holes for the 63 grill since its a 61 core. Couple small runs in clear and 2 small pieces of trash, but it'll pass for my hand.

And just my luck. The color is a bit darker on the front end. The paint company I was dealing with was thought to be closed, but just moving so I ended up buying from a different company. I have since located where the other company has moved too and will have the correct color today. Sucks...but nothing that can't be fixed. Not a bad issue compared to some I've dealt with...just a PITA, but I want it right....so the front sheetmetal will come back off this week and the paint will be ready to pick up today. Shame too as it laid down nice.
Just have to respray the front fenders and core. |
