DUDE...I can't believe you are making me do this on this forum. :smoke: I APOLIGIZE to all in advance that I have to use the following 4-letter word in such a loving and family oriented forum thread. :waah: It is a F.....F......FO.....Fo...Ford.( ugh... there I said it) .. F@&d product called Automotive Bright Metal Cleaner 8A-19522. The can I have is literally 30 years old, I got it in a bulk purchase from a closing gas station. But, it seems that they still sell it. Also, I have heard that once you remove the rust you should then apply then apply (F@&D) Super Seal Anti-Corrosion compound (F3AZ-19515-SA) to prevent it from rusting further. |

Well it has finally happened ! :metal: the paint has started ! This is the first under coat of white. A light sanding then the 2nd coat will go on and then the gloss coat. Then the sides can be final sanded for paint. The roof of these monsters is a real job to fine sand without leaning on, and denting in the roof.
My brother-in-law did a great job of block sanding the roof. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks this puppy will be done enough to come home. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Looks KILLER, Before you put your cowl vent back on, fix a piece of heavy plastic or metal screen to the underside. This will keep debris from filling your vent plentum or let moisture built up with the debris.

Alright! I've been waiting to see some paint on this girl! Can't wait to see the rest of the pics.:metal:

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
thanks for the tip on the screening. Great idea.
I've been Sooo waiting for paint that I have been eying the roller and brush sitting in the garage. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Kit and others,
You can fix the screen to the intack with clear rubber silicone. That way you can peel it off if needed with put worring about it. Turn it upside down fit the screen spot the silicone and let dry (mash the screen down into the silicone to get a good grip, use several spots. put the silicone inthe groves if the bars so you won't see it from the top side. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Just found and read through your thread here. Very cool 'burd, and the history makes it even better. Glad to see you are still sticking with the project over the years. I will be with the others waiting to see how it all turns out.

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Kit,
IF your going the OEM route, DON'T forget that on the front nose cap there is a approx. 2" wide section around the headlights that gets painted white, no matter what the rest of the colors are. I had to make myself a note to remember this on my two tone. |

Where is the white paint ? Mine has original chrome rings as shown below and there wasn't any white paint around the headlights. So I'm a little confused, which isn't out of the ordinary for me anyways...:ito:

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
i believe he's referring to the area around the grill support and front fenders:

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Double check that. That detail may be a Chevrolet only thing, and may not apply to GMC's. Looking good!

Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
OEM4Me.
You are correct, I was mistaken on the white trim. I was reading another thread and they were talking about a true OEM restoration paint job. THE GMC'S DID NOT HAVE THE WHITE TRIME RING - SORRY :( |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
No Problem !. Thanks anyways as all information is worth knowing and looking into. :ito:

Today we got the dashboard painted and a lot of prep work around the windshield. Did find some stress cracks around the windshield area that need attention before paint and the new windshield installed.
Piece by piece it get's closer to getting finished. |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
Great progress man! Keep it up!

Well...it is slowly dragging on. Not much done that shows. a little more metal work and decided to fix a cracked hinge are on the rear door before paint. Of course, just as we are ready to paint, the weather turns to crap and work piles up for everybody.:waah:
Hopefully painting the hood tomorrow and the area around the windshield so I can get that reinstalled. The hood really looks nice..can't wait for paint ! |
Re: 1960 GMC Suburban
the hood does look clean!

Wow the chrome rings look real good. I thought they were painted on mine now I'll have to try and polish them. Here are a few pictures of the dash and headlight rings on my 61. As you can see the dash looks to be a flat charcoal (black with a touch of brown). And, my headlight bezel seem to be painted but may be too far gone to polish, but Ill try anyway. Im learning a lot from your build. Thanks !!!!
