Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Well after researching some stuff on my 283, I wasn't gonna have the CR that I want
So I dug out a old engine that I got from GringoLoco last year (sposed to be a good engine, maybe needed to be rebuilt) & I pulled the heads off to see what kind of shape it was in

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...7_05090029.jpg

Low compression POS pistons :waah:

So I decided that I would pull the pan & check out the crank

Come to find out, its a 4-bolt main :metal::metal::metal:

So its a good block to rebuild & start fresh with one of these days :chevy:

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

The engine I got from Gringo had a bad timing chain too

http://i81.photobucket.com/albums/j2...7_05090046.jpg

So I got the caps off everything on the crank & it looked good, so I decided to put it in the engine that came out of my 84 I used to have
The 84's engine had an ate up the crank :waah:

Dont use too much silicone kids ;)

But the 84's engine had good pistons & you can still see the hone marks :metal:

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

The Cylinders atleast need to be honed, there is some pretty good wear from the pistons. What's that "dent" in the right cylinder at about 7 o'clock on the first ring?

Spray-Bomb 05-11-2008 07:16 AM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

The cylinder walls really arent that worn, just the flash brings it out more than it is

And I had the cylinders coated in white grease for storage, so its prolly just some of that that you are seeing

The engine is good, I have no doubt of that

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

OK, your there looking at it.

Just FYI - the worst a flash will do is "wash out" the subject in an image, it' won't add something that's not there. I'm not trying to be a d*ck, really, although the cylinders don't look "bad" I wouldn't put new parts in there the way they are, definitly not without having it vatted.
If you build a "clean" motor, you will have a lot less headache, more drive time than down time.
If it's worth your time, it's worth doing right.....right?

Spray-Bomb 05-11-2008 08:07 AM

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

I agree with you, but this engine really only had like 500 miles on it
ITS CLEAN !!!

So I dont have a problem putting it back together with a good crank
And the crank thats going in doesnt even need over sized bearings, so like I said, its all good

Besides, I dont have the money for the bearings let alone everything else

Ima put new bearing & seals in, but the other stuff is staying as is

Re: Project... Tinker !!!

Well, I haven't made any progress :(

I have been really busy with other things lately, I had to build a new tongue for my moms horse trailer, build a trailer out of a old pickup for scrap, & I've been helping my dad with his truck

Plus I havent even got the parts for my engine ordered

I did find a rear bumper that I may put on it, but I havent decided yet
