I love the title of this thread. That's what I plan on doing with mine once it's done, too. :)

Thanks all
I have made a little progress. Everything that should be green is now green except the glove box door and ash tray… I think. I wasn’t happy with the quarters so they got a little more paint as well.

Also posted in the paint and body area.... I started sanding the clear tonight with hopes of everything working out but I am guessing I am not going to get so lucky. Three wet coats of clear over base. I started with 1000 wet on a 6” block followed with 1500, 2000 and finished with 2500. It shines but sure isn’t flat. It looks ok when looking at it straight on but looking at it from any angle not so much. It has that really worked over, heavy material, yah I should have had someone else spray this, look. I tried to capture what I am talking about with pictures but the pictures look better than the reality.

This is slightly exaggerated but you get the point. Imagine a shiny shower door.

Any suggestions on how I may be able to save this? Should I block more with 1000? Should I just block all the way back to color and reshoot the base and clear? Try to save the base and just reshoot the clear? Any ideas? Help please!

hilljob26 - You are right, it is only a going to be a driver and this is supposed to be fun. A good friend who is older and probably wiser than I, reminds me of this all of the time. He also tells me that 90% of the people that will ever see this thing will never see what I see. He’s probably right unfortunately for me I am in the other 10%. I typically don’t add emoticons but this one really seems fitting.:waah:

jaros44sr – it did flatten out a bit after sanding and buffing but I will probably be recoating. We’ll see.

Not an expert here , but from what I hear, a deep clear coat will move around on you until it fully cures. Just a thought.
Hope you have a good respirator or good health insurance. That was some fog:lol:.

Re: Ice cream getter

Yes the fog got pretty harsh but as you can see my friend’s shop is a garage and it was pretty damn cold outside. You have a choice of cold clean air or warm not so clean air. I let it go as long as I could before running the exhaust fan and then after it cleared up I would have to wait for it to warm back up. I had a respirator on my face from start to finish.

Little more progress
With the tub back off of the rotisserie, the owner needing it back and me avoiding anything green I thought it was a good time to finish up the frame. I finished stripping the frame back down to nadda and took care of all of the PO’s torch carnage. I also removed all of the no longer necessary items.

I love the whole thing! What made you go with Sky jacker system. I only ask cause I would love to go bigger with 37' or 40' but some how maintain a proportional tough stance. I have a 4" rancho that rides terrible... Spongy and leans a lot. Really like the color as well.

Re: Ice cream getter

I originally choose Skyjacker because of some of what I had read here on this and other forums. Once installed however I didn’t care for how stiff the front springs were. I would have to measure them and compare them to the stock springs but they seemed to be short. No complaints about the rear but then again I never used any of the springs. I started talking to a few people who are using Deaver springs and decided to go in that direction including a longer than stock front spring. I have no intentions of ever doing any hard core trail riding but I do like to go to the dunes and overall I think I’ll prefer a smoother ride on the road as well.

Almost fell off of the first page so it must be time to update. I’m still playing with paint and clear but now I’m doing it from home. My buddy’s shop where I had been painting is full so I built myself a paint tent. It’s not great but it keeps the overspray and dust from getting all over everything I own.

I blocked the clear starting with 600 on a hard block followed with 800 and then 1000. I also switched from a high solid to a medium solid clear. I think it looks better.

I love the color! This is going to be a sweet ride! I am doing a similar build on a 72 Jimmy not far from you. What radiator are you using? Did it come with the fans? Thanks. Josh

Looking at the other paint job, this does look better, actually, it looks perfect....well done! Glad it worked out for you. Nice build of the paint room.
