Looking good so far. Keep us posted with lots of photos. What size of tires are on it and how tall does it sit at fender opening and rockers. Just trying to compare to mine. Also more info on winch please.

Still fighting brakes. All 4 wheels have new shoes, as much new hardware as I could get and new drums on the rear. I've replaced every inch of steel line, all 4 wheel cylinders, and all 3 hoses. There are still about 3 or 4 connections I can't get to stop leaking. I cut and flared all my own lines so it looks like I'm going to have to redo a few fittings. I'm not liking the way the front hoses came out with the various unions and reducers but it's my only option right now. I had to order parking brake cables for a 75 or so 3/4 ton which are much shorter so I need to make something for each side to get from there to the frame lever as well as some way to adjust them. If this ever gets sorted out, next on my list is plug wires (HEI with rams horn manifolds, ugh!) and addressing the leaking valve cover gaskets.

Not sure what parts you still have on the truck, but if all your missing is cables and adjusters you should be able to get it back to factory style. guys I worked with were very helpful and built exactly what I wanted from drawings and measurements. |

Been a while since I’ve posted anything but I have made progress. First off I gave up trying to get a choke working on the q jet, so I took the easy boring route and picked up a used perfromer intake and carb with electric choke. Grabbed a new spacer and air cleaner and rebuilt the carb

Picked up a set of 15”(yes 15”) 8 lug wheels and 33/12.50’s off the net. Exactly the look im going for.

I had my fill of getting brake fluid in my hair laying under this thing trying to get the leaks stopped, and it needed exhaust anyway, so Junior had to take grandpa to the doctor ;)

So naturally he spent about 5 minutes tightening a couple fittings, leaks were stopped and did a thorough job of making me look foolish for fighting this for so long. Anyway, we then bled the brakes and I left it with him to cobble up a parking brake system since all I had were rear cables for a mid 70s 3/4 ton and the cable from the handle and the pivots. I think he did an admirable job given what he had to work with. And it works! And I now have brakes!

Picked up a nice set of heater controls here on the board in the classifieds. Got all the cables working and hooked up. Also since the bed on this is a ‘60 where the frames are wider, the holes are all in the wrong place. The cross rails I just drilled when I put it on, but finally got around to knocking off the rear tabs and welding them back in the correct spot.

I ordered a new turn signal switch from rockauto to get brake lights working. I fought the one I had, and the parts one I had, and could never get the springs bent just right. Seems like they’re just too old and unspringy. After that I plan to get it insured and licesened at the end of the week. I did take it about a half mile down the highway after I got it back from the exhaust shop. Seemed to drive ok, sounds like a dump truck (4:56 gears) and rides like too. Lol

My observations so far:
4:57 gears Smell antifreeze but doesn't appear to be overheating or leaking anywhere so I'm not worried about that right now 4:57 gears Wanders all over the road (not surprising) 4:57 gears Transmission or T case or both have a lot (and I mean a lot) of gear noise, especially at "highway" speed which is about 45. 4:57 gears Hard to explain but it seems like there is a lot of rolling resistance. It's not the brakes. 4:57 gears Power drums are far exceeding my expectations. I'm very surprised how easy it is to stop, meaning pedal effort and distance. 4:57 gears Engine seems fine. |

Probably a bad bearing in the xfer, I had the same issue. That might also explain the high rolling resistance. Had same noise in mine and when I tore down the case it had issues. Done with rebuild, but haven't re installed yet to see. I knew it was transfer because I ran it with a longer driveshaft and case removed. Even though noise changed with trans gear selection and it looked like a trans problem, all noise went away when xfer removed. If you have access to a 2wd drive shaft, it is the ultimate way to trouble shoot it.
