Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Mark!!

Not much to report today.
Went on a little testdrive around the block and everything goes well.
We're ready for inspection next tuesday.

While driving I had a feeling the rearwing doesn't help much :lol::lol:

So took it off...

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l...o/P1250844.JPG

And modified it a little:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T...o/P1250845.JPG

No way back now ;)

Nice picture of the '59 next to his big sister the '58 Panelvan:

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-a...-no/image3.jpg

Without that rearwing I have less downforce, I noticed it at once :haha:

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-S...o/P1250843.JPG

Or..... is it my rightfoot.....:burnout:

I'll be back on tuesday, hopefully with good news...

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Well, I got my Dutch title :metal:

I had to go twice because the first time it was no good....
I had orange parkinglight up front which are not allowed in Holland (must be white, I didn't know that), dimlights had not the right image/pattern and one rearbraken didn't do it's job.

New headlights with internal parkinglights mounted and fixed the rearbrakes, and off we went again!
Now it was good :smoke:

Just had to wait a few minutes....
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-i...04b9bd5540.jpg

First time in, here I'm happy!!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-y...f566f81bb3.jpg

Finally inside, VIN check, is okay!

Measuring wheelbase
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-0...c465f5aafd.jpg

Well, here it went wrong.... The second inspection was good!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...b8e065cb28.jpg

My buddy Niels was with me, he had a great view with me behind him!
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-z...dc80400e8c.jpg

Nice pic!
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-u...b2622358ad.jpg

At the second inspection, this was waiting also:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-s...o/IMG_2353.JPG

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1...o/IMG_2354.JPG

With my title on hand, I can help my other buddy. He has the '58 Panelvan with broken leafs all around, so he gets mine. I don't need them anymore ;)
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...o/IMG_2356.JPG

So now the fun begins!!
We are building a little shop where I can work on the truck. As soon as it's ready, I'm going to change axles and do all the other stuff that I need to do!
At least no more stress to get a title....I'm happy!!

Congrats on the title.

Really enjoying the thread, every victory you have along the way, makes us root for you all the more.

The title situation has to be a HUGE victory. I haven't tackled the title situation with mine yet, it should go smooth but you never know what kind of legality crap they can come up with, finger crossed on this end.

Keep up the good work and posts, Jim

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

nice updates!!
Good to see your baby legal!!

OrrieG 12-04-2014 08:52 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Good deal! Did they dyno it for HP rating or just checking for vibations, etc at speed???

RockinKees 12-05-2014 05:25 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks all!!

What Stepside Jim said: you never know what they will look for and what they'll find, it's just who is going to do the inspection...
Luckely I had a few small things that I could repair real quick, so now we're legal!!

OrrieG,
it's not a dyno, here the brakes are tested.
You must have a certain deceleration on all wheelbrakes and not to much brake difference between left and right on one axle, that's what they test on this machine:
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...b8e065cb28.jpg

Now on to building the little new Hot Rod shed and then....the fun really begins!
Change axles, add powersteering and powerbrakes, change the fuel to LPG, liquid gas, and make sure I can drive normal petrol too.
I want to change color too, make the cab inside a nice place to be (it already is!!), and then, when all goes as planned, drive the heck out if it by April :metal:

Wish me luck ;)

Hi Kees

I'm English living over in Bussum.
I was at Sacremento swapmeet in april and bought a 58 shortbed stepside.
I also bought an 81 XJ6 over here for the suspension etc so will be going the same route as you.
I've read your thread as I'm interested in how the RDW inspection process works. In UK you just send off the documents and get the registation back in the post!
Thanks for all the info you've posted here.

Nick

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Hey Nick!
Welcome here!

Dutch registration is a bit worse here in Holland.
You have to have the original title and the "Invoer documenten" from the Dutch customs (douane).
Then you make sure the truck is ready for technical inspection, thus everything must work according the Dutch law.
There also must be a complete VIN number in the truck, if not, you get an investigation about your VIN. Costs extra.....
If all is correct, VIN and technical, you get your Dutch title, after you paid ofcourse ;)
That's all :smoke:
If you want to know more, just ask and I will try to explain it to you. PM is good too.

Oh, and make sure you make a "buildthread" with lots of pics!!
We all love pics! :lol::lol:
And you get your help when needed ;)

bogape 12-12-2014 04:22 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

thanks Kees

The truck arrived in July and I bought the Jag back in May but haven't really done much to it yet because of work on the house etc...
Once that boring stuff is over I can get back onto the truck :bowtie:
i will start a build thread soon, even maybe some pics of what I've bought.

will get in touch by PM for any advice... that'd be much appreciated

Nick

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Looks worse than it is Mark ;)

We moved the truck from 30 miles away to 5 miles away from my house.
That saves me a lot of traveling time to work at it :smoke:

At the new place we are building a shed to work in during the wintertime. We were planning to work in a big partytent, but we decided to build a new workshop

We started with pruning in the garden a bit:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-S...o/IMG_2321.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...o/IMG_2322.JPG

Next we defined the space we had to build it on, and I must say, it's really a lot bigger than a partytent ;)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-r...o/IMG_2324.JPG

We are now two weeks on the go with the build in our sparetime
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-S...o/IMG_2370.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y...o/IMG_2371.JPG

The first roof and side plate are on it now, this afternoon we did the last supports for the roof, so now it's only the big side plates and the roof.
It should be done next week so I can go inside before Christmas :four:

Wall framing looks really light compared to what I am used to designing...but probably the convention for EU??

RockinKees 12-16-2014 03:36 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Maybe it looks that way OrrieG, but it sure is strong!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

After a little disturbance from the local government...we went on with the build of our little shed.
The neighbours complained...we won :metal:
So today we did finish the big work and finally drove the truck inside his new home for the comming months!
All we have to do is some little things that are not so important, we do that as we walk by, so to speak.

My partners in crime:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-9...o/IMG_2382.JPG

Inside finally!!!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-c...o/IMG_2383.JPG

We managed to get the Jag stuff inside also, so I did't had to break my back on my own ;)
Boy that English stuff is heavy!!
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-k...o/IMG_2384.JPG

Also today my new tires arrived so I can put them on their rims Saturday.
When that done, I can finally get on with the truck, and trail fit IFS on it and measure what rideheight I want.
Next week the FUN really begins!! :chevy:

nice shop, it didn't look that big until you put the truck in there
congrats :D

RockinKees 12-30-2014 05:58 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks Kim and Ogre!!
I am really happy with it.
It's not so big, it's 5 meter by 8 meter long (16,5 foot by 26,3 foot) but for me it's big enough ;)

Now I can slowly tear it apart  and make it my own.
After I get the tires on the rims I'm ready to go wrenching...

I will put a lot of pics here, so when I go wrong, please correct me, I'm sure I'll have a lot of questions along the build, your input and critics would be greatly appreciated!!

Until next time!

What was the complaint? Looks like a nice structure you built.

RockinKees 12-31-2014 08:42 AM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Thanks guys!!

Gary, the complaint was easy, the neighbours didn't see this comming :lol:
The shop ALMOST take their view away, it's in the back yard of a good friends house, you must look that way to see it....

I think these "old" people aren't used to Dutch Hot Rodders :metal:
I want to see their faces when I'm ready

Wishing everybody a great start of the New Year, take care of yourselfs!!

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Glad you got it worked out, try not to make the neighbors mad!

RockinKees 01-03-2015 04:43 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

No, I'm not like that Gary, I was just jokin'.
But the complaints were real.....

New year, new start!
Got the truck inside, together with the axles, so why not start right away?

Too bad I didn't had time, but did a few things, such as mount the tires on the rims and took some parts off of the axle so that I can grind the ears off first thing on Monday ;)
I go for a solid mount or welding, not rubber-mount the front axle.
With that done I can sort out the ridehight with the axle under the truck, before I take the front apart.
Hope it works the way I want....

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I have to tell you to be extra careful when pulling the springs out of that Jag front end. They are the stiffest springs I've ever met, and getting them out is a little tricky. A regular spring compressor does not fit, so you need to use a very big threaded rod, or find the correct Jag tool for the job. It is scary for sure.

RockinKees 01-07-2015 05:33 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

OneOffStroker, as a matter of fact, I bought the IFS with one side loose, the upper A-arm had no bolts.
I did get it in last monday with a threaded stud through the middle of the spring and two glue clamps.
It worked, but slowly.

https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-c...o/P1250896.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-M...o/P1250897.JPG

I better didn't do this, because I now have to get it apart again...
My plan was put the IFS in one piece under the truck, put some wheels on and measure rideheight.
But the IFS will not go in one piece under it...upper A-arm mountings are not clearing framerails.

So I studied some pics I found on the allmighty interweb and went ahead with plan two: dismantle the truck right away and then unbolt the IFS and put it under the truck.
Then bolt it together again and put some weight on the front and then measure rideheight ;)

Hope it works out the way I want regarding the rideheight.
As I look at all the pics, I think it must be okay.

So, today was demolitionday:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-9...o/P1250899.JPG

Workshop get a bit full with all the parts lying around
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-A...o/P1250901.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...o/P1250909.JPG

Have to grind the motormount loose to get the engine out. PO had an aftermarket motormount welded in. I will make new motormounts and use this one as a transmount ( I hope...)

This was a usefull day, only broke two bolts ;)

oldman3 01-07-2015 08:01 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

Looks like you got alot done, good luck with the front end...Jim

OneOffStroker 01-07-2015 08:09 PM

Re: Dutch '59 Fleetside Longbed

I cut little notches into the upper a-arm mounts so that it would fit the frame rails. I had to go into them about 3/4 of an inch. I also had to grind some clearances on the top of the frame because the rear upper a arm bushing lightly contacts the frame there. You will see what I mean when you get it in there.

I'm pretty sure that I have photos of all these details in my build thread. If not, I can add them.

Thank you, Jim and Mark!
This went pretty well ;)

OneOffStroker, I went through your build again (and again and again :lol:)
but what do mean by the little notches in the upper A-arms?
Can you show me?
Did you took the upper A-arms off when fitting the IFS?
Or slide it over the framerails?

I'm aware of the notches in the upper framerails, everbody with Jag IFS has them made.

This afternoon the engine has to come out and then I will try and get the IFS under the truck and see how it fits.....

Here's a photo of a '57 Chevy truck with the top of the frame notched to clear the upper bushings. Hope this helps. BTW, do you plan on "soft mounting" the IFS using the factory Jag mounts or welding it in solid?
