Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks guys!
Update- Vic and his BIL came out with the tacked up tube and pan and we test fit it last night. Damn it it wasn't 1/4-3/8 off the bottom right out of the box. Just a touch off of the slosh stopper in the pan and we be good to go! Fantastic work as always. Thanks again, Vic. Got a fish on the line to sell the entire motor and trans currently in the truck, hope it goes well. |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Aw, man, that's awesome! Thanks so much. You shoulda jigged and patterned, you could run a pretty strong hustle just off the dudes on this site. I oughta see what it takes to make this part a sticky.
Nope, Wes, haven't touched a thing, just lots of prep and study. I cannot stand half-done stuff, so I really wanna have it together before I take the leap. Comes a point, though, you just gotta cover your chomes and jump. On the lazy incompetent end of things, Fixed 2 MX bikes, and I parted a truck all weekend, and have a fish on the line (I hope) for the motor in Yeller. I'd like to yank it and have it all bang bang gone at one whack if I can. Now that Vic (as usual) has done killer work in a timely fashion, the onus is upon me to get poppin. I'm tempted to clean and paint it and only drop it in once. We'll see. I was lookin at David Neal's truck and his motor looked good in all yellow-Decisions, decisions. I did, however, strip everything fuel system related out of the truck I parted, including the pump, carbon can, all QD tubing and lines, fuel pump harness, etc. I'm hoping to have my harness back by the Fourth, as I'm off all week. I have to procure and swap in a trans for the OTHER truck I bought soon, so I think once that's tacked down, we be good to go! |

Remember when I said something about covering your chomes and jumping? Well, here we go.
Last week, Boppa suggested that we try to list his motor/trans on craigslist and sell it, rather than trip over it til we had time to part it and swap meet it. Lo and behold, I sold it (with full disclosure) to a very nice guy who's gonna ring and bearing it and put it in the '55 big window he's building. So now, we had to yank the motor after work on Fri. After a couple of Exxon Valdez level trans plug popouts, it's out and gone. So hopefully I'll get the pan buttoned up after more great work by Vic on the pickup tube, which is in my possession. Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Good idea getting it gone. I originally found the low spots in my garage floor by way of massive oil dumps from a similar operation. I now know exactly where to put floor dry and use the squeegee.

Congrats on getting your engine sold Chip.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Did you even pull the hood?
Engine/tranny pull,,,, new record 2hrs 14min 27 seconds. Great Job! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
You even left the carb on for the pull. Ballsy. I like it!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
In un-LS related news, got a 3rd gen WS6 swaybar and all brackets for $17 on Sunday. Got a list for rock auto, got my new truck running, getting closer!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Been a while since I checked your engine swap thread...Wow! I'm jealous I didn't think of the oil pan modification. Very clever and super clean work on it and the pickup tube. That's right up my alley too. My pan hangs below the crossmember about an inch maybe 1.5 inch. I guess I better watch out for speed bumps when I start driving her.
Keep up the progress.... |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks Mike, Vic does terrific work!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Oh, yeah, the 2009 g8 GT exhaust Manifolds showed up Friday. Hollander sez: same as 2010-up Camaro. Another piece of the puzzle.

We got the inner fenders removed and a bunch of unnecessary wiring removed, discussed some fuel options, and- hey-finally- I got an email that the harness is on its way back. Better be the nicest harness I ever laid eyes on at this point. Enough said.
So, I got busy and got the engine cleaned and painted last night. Grey and yellow, came out pretty nice. You bet there's pic's! Hopefully, good things a comin'! Attachment 1279089 Attachment 1279090 Attachment 1279091 |

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks guys! Yup, painting the cover is the plan, just didn't have it in the shop last night. I'm glad it's coming back too, I was having my doubts!

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Motor and covers look killer.
Diggin the little Lincoln over by the fridge filled with 'dads pop' right? |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks Greg and Scott!
That's a straight up beer fridge, with a bottle of Tito's in the door for emergencies. Radiator has been upfitted with a steam line and a new upper hose inlet to match the LS hose. Trans got dropped off last night for a re-seal and a "4L60 improver kit". Picking it up today. Boppa took the swaybars and asst'd stuff home to clean and paint. |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Oh man I can't wait to see the engine installed it's going to look badass!

Ok, a short timeline-
Friday- Ran and got the trans, got the truck drug up from Neighbor Donnie's,got some more stuff sorted and off the firewall. Saturday- Pulled the hitch and gas tank, looks like my evil fuel pump plan just may work, keep your fingers crossed. Also pulled all fuel lines, and motor mount towers. Then got started on replacing brake lines off the dist block to replace the mess that's been bugging me for 15 years. Sunday- After six (count 'em!) trips to the parts house, I got the right stuff and actually did a decent job bending the lines, which I usually SUCK at. Got them installed, then got the frame repaired where it looked like it'd been gnawed by angry beavers, then painted till I ran out of paint. Also took the time to readjust the pass door, the fit of which has sucked since the first time we assembled it. Still not perfect, but vastly better now. Tiiiiime for the pics! Super hi tech drain method- note double funnel catch system. Attachment 1280379 Inherited mess-note loop Attachment 1280381 Much better now- did it all with pre-flared tube. Not bad, considering Attachment 1280377 Went so well, I replaced the driver's side too Attachment 1280383 New door fit-the top front corner was juuuuust hitting. Much mo betta now. Attachment 1280378 Thanks guys! |
Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Passenger side door gap looks great Chip. You've got so many other cool things you've done to your truck I think if you had a mismatch wheel no one would notice. Your truck looks great, can't wait to see it again at the Truck Nationals this year.

Re: Old Yeller's new heart-5.3/4l60 swap!
Thanks Scott. I'm hoping to see it (and you!) there as well, that's the goal. Just ordered a drop kit and wheels for Big Black as well, gonna be a busy month and a half!
