Got the shock mounts and shocks fitted at the weekend,
Attachment 1436875 Attachment 1436876 A little bit of masking tape on the frame make accurate marking of the holes so much easier  Attachment 1436877 Attachment 1436878 I used 3 1/4" bolts to get the 1 7/8" shank I needed to clear the brackets and then trimmed the length once they were fitted. I was going to weld the brackets in place but I'm not sure I need to? Anyway I now have more stroke on the shocks than travel on the suspension :metal: Today is my Birthday :bann: so I've taken the day off, the problem is the next job on the list is the brake pipes :hh: I hate doing brake pipes, so I may spend my birthday doing something else ;) The good thing about birthdays (at my age) is that I find people are more supportive of my bad habbits  Attachment 1436879 |

Life certainly is good.
First I get to copy your relocated battery tray, then I get a cool Gas Monkey Garage bottle opener/key ring in the post. Thanks Ian !! That's very generous of you, as experienced before. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfqs5lyey.jpg |

Well another rainy holiday weekend, my time has been spent between building a window seat for my daughter (she only been asking for 2 years) finishing plumbing in my brakes and finishing the lid for Rian's heater box.
The master cylinder and booster have been fitted for a while, The brake cylinder is a GM style jobbie (disc/drum) with a 7" booster and proportioning valve all from MBM. I had to make the bracket to mount them to the fire wall and used the mounting holes from the previous master cylinder. Attachment 1442620 I also had to make up a push rod, this was made from a piece of 3/8 threaded bar and a long stud connector ( for maximum adjustment) with locking nuts to keep it all safe. Attachment 1442621 I borrowed my mates flaring tool to make the pipes up. It's probably old that I am  but it makes great flares! Attachment 1442622 I noticed Andy (Uber Cool) has the same pipe bender as me, they work great and for £10 (ish) good value too. Attachment 1442623 The tubes are 3/16 cupro-nickel, I prefer it to copper as it doesn't work harden. The front flexis are new and came with the disc brake kit the rear one is ordered and should be with me by Thursday. I also fitted a Wilwood residual pressure valve to the drum brake circuit. All the pipes are clipped up using nylon clips, so once the rear flexi arrives I can get it all bled and I'll be good to go. Attachment 1442624 |

Nice install on the brake pipes and reminds me I need some clips too

I got my daughters window seat finished (except for paint and upholstery...but choosing colors is way above my pay grade ). So my daughters happy:bann:
Attachment 1442905 And I got Rians blower/heater box lid finished (theres more on his build thread Grizz1963) so he's happy too. So all in all not bad for a rainy holiday weekend. Attachment 1442903 Attachment 1442904 |

Thank you very much again for this Ian, you have no idea how pleased I am with this piece of art.
It will certainly make me open the hood more often than I normally would. I certainly understand the concept of "Above my pay grade" Story of my life. |

John Lennon once said "life is the thing that happens when you're busy making other plans" and life really has been getting in the way recently, I've barely made any progress in 6 weeks. :waah:
I finished the brake and steering install a while ago so when I found a bit of time recently I thought I would take the oportunity to put the truck back on its wheels . I fitted the 20" wheels I bought a while back but discovered a snag, the centre caps wouldn't fit, the centre hub of the new discs stick out too far. :dohh: Attachment 1457560 I have always intended to paint the spokes grey so it was time to kill two birds with one stone. I didn't think a beer can hub cap would work with this style of wheel so after a bit of head scratching and surfing the net I found these on the Speedway eBay store, Attachment 1457561 they're not the best quality I've ever seen (made in Taiwan) but they were in a sale and at $40 for the full set (like £25) they are ok. I got some Bow Tie centre cap stickers for £5 also from eBay to finish them off. Attachment 1457562 The towers taper so trying to work out the exact dia at the point they would come through the centre caps was a bit of a challenge, after detailed measuring and calculations :bs: Ok I guessed that it was about 3 1/2", which was real handy because I had a 3 1/2" hole saw. Attachment 1457568 Next up paint the spokes, I chose a semi gloss mid grey (I only did 2 wheels in case I didn't like the colour). I have to say masking them was a pain, they literally took an hour each to mask. Attachment 1457572 |

I gave them a good sand and de-grease, followed by a coat of etch so the paint should stay on ok (there's nothing worse than flaky wheels),:agree:
Attachment 1457577 Then 2 coats of 2K grey, I am very pleased with the way they turned out Attachment 1457578 All in the wheels (including tyres) stand me at shade over £250 ($375) with the spinners fitted I think they look pretty cool (Still need to tighten the centre caps though) Attachment 1457579 Attachment 1457581 |

Hello everyone, hope you all had a great Christmas and may I wish everyone good health and happiness for 2016.
Those of you who follow this thread will recall the "new" hood I shipped all the way from California. Attachment 1481405 Most of the time since the last update has been spent working the many dings and dents out of my "new" hood. Attachment 1481406 This has taken rather longer than I had originally hoped it would but today I got a final coat of primer applied and (if I say so myself) it's looking pretty good. I have also bust the back suspension off ready for its rebuild and 5" drop. I have had the trailing arms blasted,
Attachment 1481409 and while I was at it had the hinges done too. I made a "stretcher" for the springs so that the blaster could get in between the coils and I could get the paint between them too Attachment 1481410 The usual coat of etch primer and two coats of 2K black and they are almost good as new. Attachment 1481411 They look pretty cool fitted too. Attachment 1481412 The hood is so big it takes up most of my work space in my garage, so next job will be to paint the hood and then I'll get it fitted, this will give me some working space to get cracking with the rear supension. |

This is not really truck related but I thought I'd share an experience I had earlier in the week. I have been a lifelong fan of the Irish rock band Thin Lizzy. The singer/song writer and front man Phil Lynott died in 1986 and every year on the anniversary of his death a group of his friends organise a series of gigs (known as the "Vibe for Philo") in his home town of Dublin, to celebrate his life and music. People come from all over the world, it's an amazing three days.
Anyway Phil is buried out on the coast a short train ride from Dublin, so on Monday (the anniversary of his death) me and my mate (also called Phil) decided we would go and pay our respects (if we could find his grave!). We got to the train station in Howth and were clearly looking very lost when a gentlemen, who introduced himself as Gerry, asked where we were "off to". When we told him he said he was also going to the grave, had just ordered a taxi and we were welcome to share it, we gratefully accepted. This is where it got "special". He then mentioned that he was going to visit Philomena and would it be ok with us if we called there first. Philomena is Phil Lynotts mum !!!!! suffice to say we agreed. :metal: :metal: (sorry about the pictures I cannot get them the right way up) Attachment 1486077 I cannot ever remember meeting such a lovely person, she was polite, utterly charming and very hospitable. Although she has much Phil's memorabilia loaned out to museums etc all over the world there is a room in her house where she keeps some of his gold and platinum discs, his juke box and a few more personal items. She was happy for us to browse the items telling us funny stories attached to many of them. She even "made" all of us try on his cowboy hat. Attachment 1486074 Attachment 1486079 Gerry it turned out as well as being a friend of Phil Lynott, had roadied for (amongst others) Thin Lizzy and Rory Gallagher, he was great company and kept us amused for several hours with some truly amazing stories. Attachment 1486080 The "Vibe for Philo" is always a special few days but this year for me at least it was extra special |

Thanks for Sharing Ian . What an awesome trip made even better by a chance meeting . I like you grew up with the songs of thin lizzy playing on a tape cassette in my first car . Glad you had a great time .

Chance meetings, being what they are, are often so much more than that. Which is why my motto is always "Be Nice" You are an awesome guy yourself, and here "Chance" paid you back double. Like Martin and I meeting a whole raft of amazing people on our road trip, and one of them being Mike and Sarah Losh, through Clem, which culminated in us getting to meet some of the Gas Monkey guys, your world is a whole lot better for a chance meeting. Thanks for sharing, at our age, the trucks we drive and music we like means this is totally appropriate. For those who do not know Thin Lizzy........... Click Links below. The Boys are back in town. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=JG3UiGHv0FU Still in love with you. http://youtu.be/261uidoVOVk Whiskey in the jar. http://youtu.be/wyQ-tScuzwM I do not want to apologise for hijacking your thread Ian, as I grew up on a diet that included Thin Lizzy too. I finally got a top coat on my hood this weekend. As I have limited space, painting anything in my garage is a challenge, painting something the size of a 64 C10 hood more so. I have two problems, first is space, I need to be able to get around it to paint it and second I need to keep the paint clean. Getting the hood as near vertical as possible was the best solution.
To achieve this I "knocked up" a frame (don't laugh) :haha:, Attachment 1486789 Not my finest carpentry but it certainly did the job Attachment 1486799 Before and after Attachment 1486793 Attachment 1486794 Next job to get it fitted |
Re: Ian's Tennessee Honey '64 Short Box Step-side - England
damn, that looks awesome!!!!

Re: Ian's Tennessee Honey '64 Short Box Step-side - England
Looking good Ian . I know what it's like to have no room . I think we are all heading for the same finish line . Who is going to get there first, I wouldn't like to bet on it . I think you may be ahead of me and Rian . So I better get my finger out .

A quick update, I managed to get the hood fitted this weekend, so my truck doesn't look like Mater anymore, it needs a tweak to get the gaps and fit a little better but the colour match is very good.
Attachment 1488934 Attachment 1488935 I'm now going to get cracking on the rear suspension, I'm fitting 4" lowered springs and 1" lowering blocks with matching shocks, I've also got poly bushes, an adjustable panhard bar and a shock mount relocation kit, all from POL. if it fits as good as the other stuff I've had from them it should be fine. However before I fit these new components I want to strengthen the trailing arms. So I've been doing a bit of "research" on this forum Welding the trailing arms up seems a popular solution, the amount of weld seems to be proportionate to the horsepower of the truck. This was posted by Fldawg, I know many of you looking at this picture will have the same reaction I had ( no not the trailing arms they're great)...............what's Rian doing in Florida!! :haha: Attachment 1488936 Also fitting strengthening plates as the factory did (I think these are C20?) seems to be a good option too. Attachment 1488937 So my intention (unless anyone tells me different) is to weld the 2 halves of the trailing arm together with (approximately) a 1" weld every 6" plus fully weld the ends and then fit strengthening plates top and bottom as per GM. I am going to drill and plug weld the plates, rather than fillet weld the edges to get a spot weld /rivet effect, I'm hoping it will look more "factory". Here's my starting point, I'll post updates as I go. Attachment 1488938 |
Re: Ian's Tennessee Honey '64 Short Box Step-side - England
It's starting to take shape at the front . Like you , everything I have had from POL has fitted nicely . It won't be long before you are driving it Ian

Made a little more progress today, I've got the trailing arms welded up, Attachment 1490922 Attachment 1490923 As planned I've welded about 1" in 6" top and bottom plus fully welded the ends. I'm amazed at how much stiffer they are and how much more solid they feel. I'm now debating whether to add the strengthening plates or not, I'll sleep on it and decide tomorrow. I also removed the old bushes, the new poly bushes use the outer tube from the original bushes so I had to remove the old rubbers and inner sleeves without damaging them. To do this I ran a drill through the old rubber, it was so hard and perished it drilled great. Attachment 1490924 Then pulled out the centre tube with a pair of vice grips. Attachment 1490927 Once this was removed the remains of the old rubber pushed out easily leaving a nice clean tube for the new bushes. Attachment 1490928 |
