Re: NAPCO Thread
Sweet truck.... try running the plates to see if you can track it down. That would be cool if you could find it. I remember those magic mountain truck shows. I drooled all over those trucks.

Re: NAPCO Thread
Thanks. The Chevy Madness Meets were pretty cool at Magic Mountain. One side of the parking lot would be trucks, and the other side would be cars. The plates were California with them being personalized, my last name. My dad traded for a 70 Chevelle drop top, and a 88 incher Harley back then. I heard the truck may have went to Iowa, the guys name was Dan Adams, should not be hard to find with that last name? lol The tunnel ram came off and wound up on my 64 Nova, the four speed came out, and a my dad built a TH400 for it. My dad also scribed his name inside the diffrential covers. It was actually a GMC with a Chevy Gate and front clip, so it had the GMC dash. It would be nice to find.....

Glad I came across this thread. Would the BOM number have been changed if a NAPCO conversion was done on a 63 GMC suburban? Here's what it looks like.
|
Re: NAPCO Thread
I don't see why unless it was a 3/4 ton. All Suburbans that I have seen were 1/2 tons with a short wheelbase. They would have had closed knuckle Dana 44 front axles with drum brakes and either a 12 bolt or a GM corporate HO 35 drop out rear axle if it was a Chevy and a Dana 44 rear axle if it was a GMC.
|
Re: NAPCO Thread
Are you asking if the number would have been changed once the axle laded in a Suburban? If so,I don't think so. I've never seen any axle numbered specifically for the vehicle it was used in. The number pertains to the axle unit itself, only. I hope this helps.

Re: NAPCO Thread
Yes that's what I was wondering. I have had a time trying to just find out what year and exactly what I have. I'm trying to get brake parts such as the brake bar (thinking of making my own). I have been able to find the bearings, brake shoes. Still need one six lug drum and the right rear axle. I don't know if an after market is available? Found drums but not deep enough at the axle face area. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks |
Re: NAPCO Thread
Take a picture of the whole axel and post it up...we may be able to identify the axel and then you can get your parts :uhmk:

Re: NAPCO Thread
OK rearend..probly from a Van...I had a rear 60 years ago and was told early 70s era Chevy Van but?? don't have any facts or proff..soo...no help right :uhmk:
someone may know...:ito: |
Re: NAPCO Thread
I scored at pick a part with the brake bar from a 1966 jeep. Same number and bendix. Found six lug drums on at 1981 jeep loredo with inline six that look the same but the holes for the studs are smaller. Going back to remeasure everything.
|
Re: NAPCO Thread
no go on the drums. The center hole for the axle was to small.

I would love to find a truck and use ALL of that vintage equipment from those pics.

Re: NAPCO Thread
I tried Napa for the drums but no luck. Getting to the point of wanting to change it out for a newer model that I can find parts. This Dana is 62" drum face to drum face. It's 6 lug. Do any of you guys no of any Dana's that would fit? Or maybe another solution?
Thanks |
Re: NAPCO Thread
A couple of options would be a 12 bolt from a Chevy, a Dana 44 from a GMC 4x4 or a 14 bolt semi-float from a later GM vehicle. A 2wd 14 bolt is 3" narrower than a 4x4 rear axle. Not sure about the 88-98 axle pad width right now, but could measure it for you if your interested. The semi-float 14 bolt would be the strongest, but the closest stock axle ratio would be a 3.42. Another option could be a Jeep Cherokee Chief Dana 44 since they are wider than a Wagoneer rear axle. You could consider a disc brake conversion on the Dana 60 that may solve your drum issue. Did you look on Jollys 60/66 GMC website for any info on the brakes? I looked at info on there the other day and did see the availability of the Dana 60 rear axle in your application.

Here's the '59 3/4 ton I had for a while last summer, I6/4spd. It was a utility company truck that was originally yellow and green.
Sorry I had to show off my '79 GMC 1 ton 4X4 Pathfinder van towing my '59 Napco, I thought it was cool. |
Re: NAPCO Thread
I went to a car show at Watson Lake near Prescott and parked next to an old customer of mine who brought a licensed and insured (and driveable) '59 Napco chassis to the show. It was cool catching up with him as I have not seen him ni several years and he was one of the best customers to deal with.

Re: NAPCO Thread
Thanks special-K, that was my yellow 57 1 ton at the bottom. I loved that truck :waah:

Re: NAPCO Thread
NapcoinAustin, most truck tire places can get those tires. Very common bias-ply tires.

Re: NAPCO Thread
Thirdstreet- the sizing is what confuses me.

Re: NAPCO Thread
9.00-16 = 9 inches wide, 16 inch wheel
