I went early, got a parking spot and then took the family into Kmart for pizza.
We had a fun time.:flag:
It will be nice if I ever get my extended cab project done so I can cart a couple more people around with me but that is way back on the to do list. :help:

Installed the third brake lite today. Fairly easy to do. The hardest part was fishing over the wire, and it wasn't too bad. :smoke: Of course the dome lite was rigged in there so now I have to fix that......

Damn protrash. Lookin good. I haven't been around in a while so this is my first time seeing the new addition. Impressive. Makes me want a driver. I'm always borrowing my father in laws truck because I don't have one... that runs anyway. love the third brake light. So when you going to round out the herd with a crew?:lol:

Thanx much!!!:metal: The tailgate color match was more like dumb luck:lol:...but that works too!! I definitely use winter as much as possible to try and get things done and it is my favorite time of year. I've worked outside for 20 years so my adjectives are a little stronger than toasty;).



Thanx Tony; I've been trying hard to get all the stuff done and I've fixed quite a bit more than I intended, but I think we know how that goes. If your up for an eastside run your more than welcome. I've gone out to the cruise that PMD frequents and figured I'd meet him at some point. I'm roughly in east-central Mesa.

Nice work on your ride, by the way, it looks super nice.

Some work, bad weather, and relaxing got in the way of more progress this weekend but I did fix my dome light by replacing it. Didnt know I had one extra. Also installed new valve cover gaskets as the old ones were leaking. Used Fel-Pro rubber and got rid of the big hold downs. Cleaned the valve covers and used some 1/4''-20 bolts....also pulled out my horn buttons. I'm going with the fancy one as it fits the steering wheel better. The wheel I installed is 1/2'' in diameter larger than the previous wheel. Here are some pics.....

Just for fun I painted my fender emblems; hoefully they match the tastefully dilapidated look of the truck. Cleaning up some wiring and doing my dizzy swap, too.

OK, finished my dizzy swap. I still need to re-do some wiring and fire it up. It fit no problem; dont know why others have issues. I also have an Accel coil on top which is huge and it clears the firewall by 1/4''.

Pulled out my plug wires that came on the 454 in the 'burb.....the pics speak for themselves.

Didn't get it fired. Had no spark and solved that problem. Now it's just a timing issue and I ran out of steam. I need to pull the cap and get everything lined up and I believe it will fire up with no problem.

Timing was off some so I moved the dizzy after setting TDC on #1. Fired up but it needed advance and I was against the firewall so I pulled it back out and moved it one tooth to center my dizzy throw.

How the hell do you put in the horn button???

Repeat of my last question: How do you install the horn button? I greased mine up but it keeps popping out!

Played around today and painted my ms/cyl and made a cover for my shifter base. Drove around the 'hood pumping the brake as it does not have enough pedal. It's the last thing to be done so I can drive this truck.

Drove to a cruise last nite just to go somewhere and ran into 2 Board members, Rob and Erock. Nice seeing you guys.

Finally fixed my turn signals after tearing the stuff apart for the 3rd time. The wiring terminates in a block that fits into the turn signal switch assembly. Mine aparently loosened up over time. I figured this out by taking off the steering wheel and staring at the switch while clicking it back and forth. It caused my left turn signals not to operate unless I held down on the lever. (See the pic of a spare switch with the two parts.) I fixed it by slightly bending the small brass leaves that make contact with one another. Simple!!

I tore apart a spare column and used the pieces to eliminate my column shifter and put on some parts with original fawn and patina. Finally figured out how to get the horn button in too.

I had the same problem with the the turn signals on the '66
it's nice when you can tear something apart and fix it without having to buy anything :metal:

Yes. It finally occured to me to put the rubber ring in first, then slide the horn button on. I had the rubber on the button and was trying to cram it into the retaining ring/cup.:dum:

I fought a tilt column turn signal for the better half of a weekend once before it gave up fighting and let me win!!

I adapted my 64 to a 77 tilt column and spent days with a wiring diagram adapting the old to the new . But I have turn signals and hazard lights that work now!!
I will be passing through Yuma soon to help my In-laws.-Wish Mesa was closer and I had more time, I would love to check out the Dry Desert wrecking yards and meet some of the Arizona members

I have a 73+ column in my 'burb. It's too short! I was going to change it out at some point. I can steer with it all the way up and arm on my leg:lol:...I'm 6'2''.

On Saturday a bunch of board members are getting together in Scottsdale, cant make it??

I wont be in Yuma till the following Tuesday
I went to "Moonlight in the Oasis" show in Yuma a few years ago and was bummed to find out that they moved it up to early March and I would miss it this time.
I may be a snowbird someday , save me a spot in a few years !
I used to laugh at my In-laws yearly migration but as I get older, being warm all winter is looking better than snow and freezing my butt off .:lol:

I've had to mess with the brass contacts in the turn signal switch before. I spent many hours trying to figure out a tail light/turnsignal issue, and all it was, was the brass contacts were messed up inside the switch. Never could figure out how that happened inside the switch

Being that I've had a bunch of positive outcomes on my last wiring projects I decided to fix my back-up lights. I pulled out the harness from the rear and cleaned it up. I Armor-All the wire as it seems to recondition the jackets; anybody know how to recondition wire?? I found some housings that I had for 10 years and they were ready to go. I cleaned up the sockets and installed new bulbs.

On the inside the original harness was intact but not working due to the column shift being disconnected somewhere along the line. I just unplugged the line on the firewall and added a loop from my fuse block thru the B&M shifter and fed the original plug. After messing with some grounding on the housings they worked just fine.

You cannot really re-condition wire . The oils in the insulation deteriorate over time and that is what makes the jacket brittle and crack. Armour-all may help if it is not dried out too bad.
New stranded commercial electrical wiring is insulation class THHW / THHN-2 which is gasoline and oil resistant and somewhat sunlight resistant.

I added a ground wire to the frame of the back-up light and on each one of the turn signals and grounded each to the frame.
A good heavy wire with soldered connections(and heat shrink tube) clean sockets and a good ground will have reliable bright lights . Most lighting problems are usually due to bad grounds and poor connections on old trucks.:chevy:

I use THHN every day and had no idea it was auto spec now.:smoke: I had thought about using WD-40 on the wire but didnt want the oily mess. The Armor-All was an attempt at trying to put some life back in the wire.

The grounding path from the bulb to the body on these trucks passes thru too many pieces for my taste. I 100% agree with the added ground wires.

I do not know if THHN is auto spec or not, I know it is usable and works just fine

THHN is not for autos. You should be using something like GXL for automotive purposes.

signs of the sickness ... often browse these Chevy Truck sites and download 100's of pictures of awsome trucks ... look at Craigs list and dream of buying all the old Chevy trucks ... spend money I don't have improving my 63 Fleet ... screen saver on computer displays 100's of different Chevy Trucks randomly ... wife says I have a problem ... hmmm and I don't think there is a cure? Well at least I'm not alone!

This may be true.. But I am a master electrician and can always find THHN-2/THWN in any gauge and any color I need in the scrap box at work.
And the price is FREE!!
Have not ever had a problem using it on autos or tractors.
I will check out the GXL so I will know about it.:chevy:

Update---
THHN has a thicker insulation and a gasoline /oil resistant jacket but is rated at 90*C dry
GXL is auto spec for Ford,GM and Chrysler and has a higher 125*C temp rating
Actual conductive Wire is dimensionally the same with the same stranding.
Difference is in the insulation jacket
