Personally, I'm using a miller 251 with a tweko gun, argon/co2, 75/25 blend and I love it! They give beautiful welds, and I have never tripped the duty cycle even welding a hopper in a trash truck! Plain and simply they rock!

I just picked one of these up too. Trust me, it is a lot of welder for that price though. You definately got your money's worth.

This is the welder I have and I love it. It's a nice, easy to setup and use machine and works great for body panels, floorpans, etc. I mostly do my welding outside so I have mine set to use flux-core, but it's nice to have the option of gas in case you're welding inside a garage/shop and want nicer welds with less spatter.

My dad walked beams in New York City they used Lincolns. When he came off of the beams they had Lincolns in the shop. He told me when I got my frist machine make sure you get a Lincoln , Miller , Or Hobart that way no matter were you go in the world it can be fixed. So now all I run is Lincolns
140 Volt 110 Mig
SP 250 Mig
Power Mig 255
Square Wave 275 Tig
Precision Tig 375

Lou, My dad walked Iron in PA and OH. He has Lincolns all the way as do I. I used Miller through college and bought one when I could, need a TIG and a Plasma for retirement!

Re: Welders!

probaly will depends how cheap you found it for. I would go for a miller esab or lincoln at that price though similar models go for about the same or less brand new and have a 3 year warranty on the whole thing not just transformer

. for a couple hundred bucks though it ought to be good to go

Well, finally broke down after looking on flea Bay, bargain trader, local paper, and local pawn shops and bought a new Lincoln 3200HD. Will look over the instructions tomorrow, set her up and start practicing. Been a number of years since I've done any welding so I'll need to shake off the cobwebs. THEN I can start making repairs on my truck. Looking forward to making some progress!

Later,
Paul

The last time I ran a bead was about 9-10 years ago with aLincoln weld pak 100. i did ok with it since it was flux core and no expereince. The other day I did a little welding at work with a Snap on welder and gas and I was surprized how decent my weldes were.

thi last weekend i used a millermatic 130xp,it is a 110 unit. i tryed to use fluxcore, but it was welding like crap and i ran out of f/c wire, then i switched to solid wire and it welded like 100 times better. i was useing the flux core because it was windy outside, but the solid mig did a good job.

Re: Welders!

Ive got a 135 lincoln mig, a lincoln AC/DC arc with a poor mans Tig, and a cheap ebay 40 amp plasma. All of them serve their purpose and work great. If any one is looking into starting tig welding and you have a AC/DC arc welder pick up a tig torch and a bottle of argon and start welding, i know it doesn't have the variability of a expensive tig and no foot control or welding aluminum but it will put down some really nice strong beads.

that should serve you well I have had a SP135 which is the older model of the 3200(i think) for 7 years. Ive run many pounds of flux core and hard wire through it. the thing even fell off the top of an 8 foot ladder once LOL dented the crap out of it but no other damage, I thought it was done for. It hasn't had a problem yet.

TH53 what kind of plasma cutter do you have? I have one loaned to me but I need to have one for cutting sheet metal ?

DURRTY I have a Everlast 40 amp plasma i works good, better than i expected, it was around $400 to my door. One thing is though if you decide to go with a cheap china plasma be sure to buy a big batch of consumables with it becuse you will be laughed at if you try to get them at a welding supply store.

Any opinions on a Hobart 140 with gas conversion kit (for doing tin mainly )
as a first welder purchase.
110v ( had 220v but only 2 lightbulbs and 1 plug-in,so i split it a couple of years back for 8 ft florescents and more plug-ins)
I am a novice (wait,,,I mean a virgin) at welding.
Like anything I've been new at, don't want bottom of the line stuff, but don't think (as a beginner)I need top shelf stuff either.
Was also thinking of the one from sears thats mentioned on pg.1 of this thread (but no response)and haven't seen any mention of the 140 ,any feedback would be awesome.
would like to get one this week before the other half decides it should be spent on something more important (LOL like there's anyting more important right now).I already got stalled out last year for that.
I plan on practicing alot before I even touch my truck.
Appreciate it, Thanks, Trent

Re: Welders!

That one will work well for "tin" ( body work? right) its the same or real real similar to the miller and Lincoln 135-140 welders we have talked about.

one thing though, if your breakers are stretched out with allot draw on them the welder will blow the breaker or at least not run to consistent. try to get the welder on its own breaker and a 20amp if possible. other wise turn off as much as you can on the circuit you are plugging the welder into. It will still run decent if you cant just a FYI. I am no electrician, I am speaking from experience, and many trips to the breaker box. Once I got my garage wired properly the welder ran much better and didn't blow the breaker(20amp) again. also if you have to use and extension cord use the biggest gauge wire you can. I also have my 220 on its own 50 amp fuse.

Re: Welders!

I bought a Hobart Handler 140 and put gas on it and it works great. I have done all my welding on my truck with it. Works great on sheet metal and welds up to 1/4 which works for me because nothing on my truck is 1/4 anyways. I also did my c-notch and it worked like a charm.

Thanks DURRTY,the durability of my fuse box has kind of been in the back of my mind since the start. If I have to have it upgraded then I will.
I'm positive now that the HH140 is the one for me.
spr85GMC, My budget also is 800.00 I'm pretty sure I can get all my basic stuff for that much, the bottle I'll need might put it a little over that, but i haven't shopped for the cost on one yet
Thanks guys.

Re: Welders!

I just popped for a Miller Millermatic 140 with Autoset. I considered the 180, but it just seemed like more than I would need and I liked the idea of being able to use the thing on house current even though I have a 220 outlet in my garage.

http://www.millerwelds.com/products/...c_140_autoset/

$649 at the local Central Welding Supply - "blowout" pricing :)

I bought a spool of non-gas wire just to see if I can still weld :) I'll go back and pick up the cart and bottle next weekend.

Hobart Handler 187 will do anything you need on your truck. You could get a HH 140 if you want to go with a 120 volt machine, but I wouldn't use it for any heavy stuff like frame work.

BOUGHT ME A WELDER!!!!!

Picked up a Miller 175 in very good shape from a fellow board member and coworker. Need to get the right outlet in the garage and make me an extension cord so I can drag it out onto the driveway.

Re: Welders!

I too just purchased a welder. New- in box - Lincoln Pro Mig 180. Guy got it as a gift and it seems his wife decided it wasn't something he should have :(

Anyway, I put in a 240 volt outlet in the garage bought a HF auto-darkening helmet (came highly recommended) and started laying beads yesterday (flux only, don't have a bottle yet).

I'm going to look into a community college welding class (my county doesn't offer one, but we have reciprocity with dallas county!)

Wish me luck (and about the time of retirement, I'll be 10% the welder that Lou is).

Re: Welders!

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94164
I got this from Harbor Freight a few months ago and have been very happy with it, even taught myself how to weld with it. Been using flux cored wire as I have not got around to getting the bottles and regulators but I think I will keep this one set up for flux as I got another welder from free that will be set up for gas. Ive used the harbor freight welded many times, mostly using it to weld up and smooth out all the holes on my firewall. I have not had a problem yet and even got a 2 year warrenty that begins in about 2 more months after the manufacture warrenty. If anything breaks I bring it back to the store and exchange it for a new one. Also picked up a auto darkening helmet from there too.

My other welder I got for free from my boss. (i think the following links work, I will check when I get home)
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1208388414
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1208388564
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1208388574
http://i175.photobucket.com/albums/w...g?t=1208388590
Anyway its made by solar, manufactured in 1982 in the USA. My boss bought it new and bearly used it and it sat in his basement for a while and gave it to me for free when I bought my 52 off of him. All I had to do was put a new cord and plug on it, and I still need to get the bottles for it but its ready to go. Once I get the bottles then I will be able to try it out for the first time. I believe its either a side company of snap-on or lincoln, im not sure. Boss said it was snap-on but when googled I get lincoln. Anyone know?

Re: Welders!

I would say start with, taking a course in welding form your local comunity collage, then trying out a few different welders, I've worked in a number of shops and depending on how they are maintained, they were all different. it just took time to get use to how each welder works and which settings work best for me.
check local pawn shops see whats in there,
Then find your local welding equipment repair shop and see what they have in there shop for sale and ask what went wrong and see what it costs to repair and how often they have to do it
most 110-120 mig lincn, miller etc are very reliable for the home use. and use gas, co2 or argon mix, argon is about 3 times as expensive but you get what you pay for.

Re: Welders!

found this welder for sale for 225.00 thought i would ask to see what you guys thought about it for body work and sheet metal.

SP-100T Lincoln Mig

i will be learning to weld and hopefully using something liek this to do my patches and my metalwork. if anyone has used it and liked it or not liked it, it would be appreciated. thanks

Re: Welders!

For home, use once in a while Good unit Get a cart an argon mix or co2 to go with it I used one a while back low duty cycle but over all at worked well. should be a good unit.
Things to look for;
good working regulator
good gun head.
no kinks in feed line to gun
wire tension, take up wheel, spindle area operational.
I bought one 20yrs ago, mig welder, and it cost more to referbish after then to buy a new good linc, or miller. learned the hard way.
lincoln makes a great series of mig welders for this price its hard to go wrong but check it out first before you buy it

Looking for a welder & have narrowed it down to a Miller 175, 180, 185 or 210.
There is a 210 on craigslist locally. What is a good price for a used 210?

Thanks

Reinovator 11-08-2008 11:24 AM

Re: Welders!

My advice would be Check with Pawn Shops First.
Then local ads.
Then find a welding repair center.
be aware most mig welders need parts ie. tips some times the gun and or sleeve
best price well depend on area
in my area I've seen any where from $100 to $600 used small duty or portable 110v or 220v
heavy duty or industrial $600 two $2000
Areas will differ depending on demand
Good luck

Re: Welders!

Mark P. here from Southern MD. I've been an US. Naval Aircraft certifyied MIG,TIG,SMAW, OXYFUEL welder for 16 or so years now.I've used many diffrent welders over the years. i own a couple lincolns and a thermal arc gts 300 tig. IMHO they're all good. for auto applications my personal favorite is my lincoln sp 100. its a 110v welder with 25%75% argon co2 mix 10lb spool of .023 solid core wire. the reason for the small wire size is as follows. the sp100 has enough for auto apps. power settings are as follows A,B,C,D and wire feed is 1-10 For body panels i use B,3-4 wire speed. i spot weld all body panels. tacking the panels aprox 4" apart then 2,1",.5,.25, etc until the entire seam has been welded. PATIENCE WILL PAY OFF!!! take your time and not put a lot of heat in the welded area. this will keep any warping down to an absolute minium. As for the frame D,5-6 and overhead D,6-7. i almost always weave my beads in an overlapping c motion. The .023 wire and the weaving will put more than enough heat/ penetration in the weld than you need. I have built many racecar chasis that have been NHRA/IHRA certifyied to 7.50 sec with this welder. PM or email me @ m.phippen@hotmail .com if i can be of any help to my fellow bowtie brothers and sisters. V/R Mark Phippen
