Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
small update.
Monday was a bummer night, struggled with the exhaust routing. So gave up and moved onto to try the propshaft. major bummer its the wrong model and wrong all together, its too short on the front and rear shafts. So went to bed not a happy bunny. Wednesday got back on it and having consulted with a local Propshaft shop decided it will be best to have a complete new 2 piece prop made. Next job to tackle was the air valve body , compressor and tank mounting, the lazy option would be to install in the bed and cover with a box. However it feels like a cop out and will bite me on the arse in future if I want to replace the load bed wood or just use the full bed the transport stuff around. So after many cups of tea, lying on the floor and pulling faces like this. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psua87wpih.jpg I came up with the idea of a frame slung under the bed and attached to the outside of the chassis rail. Ignore the temp wiring lash up, that will be rewired. But think I need a larger air tank for 4 bags. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psofyjk61i.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psmnpn2wns.jpg control paddle is pretty clever, you can do each corner on its own, combine front and rear only , or middle switch does all 4 corners http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pse2ieukfr.jpg |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Couple of jobs this weekend, new accelerator pedal fitted, so wont wear a hole in my shoe now:metal:
First job was to straighten the old linkage as I guess the PO had bent it to work without a pedal. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pssjgmjrrx.jpg Managed to heat it with a gas torch without setting fire to the interior, which is always a good result:lol: http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pshejb3vzs.jpg New rubber pedal in place http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psdd0ulbnv.jpg Next up I checked on the front brake hoses..............hmmm these are past their sell by date, news ones on order http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psf7tbbsnn.jpg checked out the front suspension and steering and made another list of required parts http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psk83e6v8q.jpg Once i'd scraped off the old dirt and grease the suspension was in surprising good condition, needs a coat of paint before this goes back together. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psbie5mlos.jpg this was from just one suspension arm http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psgsbi6nxh.jpg Next need to adaptor the lower arms and cross member to take the front air bags |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
No fire after working with torch...:metal:
Good call on the brake hoses...:mm: |

It's amazing the difference a bit of cleaning and scraping can make, looks so much better already. I did something similar then gave it a coat of red oxide primer (Wilkinsons own make, cheap as chips and works brilliantly), when I say "I" I actually mean my son Jake, he fits under the fender better than I do!

tonight's update
Stripped and re greased front bearings, all looked good no water ingress or flat spotting on the bearing, in fact grease was nice and clean. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pstlgsiazr.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psneomybqa.jpg front wing removed and going to use a combination of the existing wing and the donor one off martin http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswosnr9aq.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psgnp4udhx.jpg |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Busy weekend. Ordered a new 2 piece propshaft on Thursday from local propshaft manufacturer, gave them a drawing and picked it up 24 hours later.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psalbbguhp.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pst3bi3akk.jpg Now lets hope the measurements are correct............. phew! its fitted well, just need to remove the centre bearing carrier and redrill to suit. first need to removed the rivets. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps0jqupdt2.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psifhxx0hs.jpg bearing carrier redrill and refitted with 3/8" bolts http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psq8agtzod.jpg Nice to have something completely new that I know will now give years of fault free running. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps8gddi5fk.jpg Next onto the front suspension, after many many hours of scrapping and cleaning I could finally see all the front suspension. All in good condition, only the pitman arm to replace. Cleaned all the grease nipples on the front suspension and pumped full of new grease, always satisfying to see/hear the clean grease going into the bearings that have probably been dry for decades. Then 2 coats of satin black on all the steering and suspension parts. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pshm0pzlpj.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psiwytrwwl.jpg Certainly looks 100% better than before! http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psk83e6v8q.jpg Next up I mocked up the front air bag. Top brackets will be a 6mm steel plate bolted across the crossmember upper spring pocket. Not finalised the bottom setup yet. But thinking of making up some sort of alloy spacer to go between bag and bottom of spring pocket. This way the arms have not been altered and hence could easily be converted back to springs in the future http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps4bzwppbd.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psrav8jxjf.jpg rear bumper looks better in an off white colour http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psz7wzechw.jpg Good weather this weekend so also got my 59 Apache out to collect the propshaft and run some other parts collection trips http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pss84pcoiz.jpg All in all a good weekend. More on the front air bags during the week |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Rockin' right along...:metal:

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
No photos for tonight, but a bit more done. Parts arrived today from Rockauto, yippee!
So front brake flexes fitted, new pitman arm fitted. More of the front air bags mocked up. More packages arrived with exhaust parts so will be running with twin back boxes exiting either side at the rear with 3" stainless tail pipes. Also ebay purchase of an ashtray arrived from USA, so no more ugly gaps in the dashboard. Not bad considering it was outside and pouring down! I've actually sold the truck to a mate for what I had in it. As I have 2 other projects also needing funds, a 59 Apache and a 66 Galaxie 500. So he is paying for the remainder of the parts to get road legal. It's his first american truck and first fun ( 2nd) car for many years so he's really excited to get it on the road and will carry on the build thread once we have it road registered, he also has some great plans for it, which I'll let him explain once its in his hands. he is ona post a few pages back as Ratz. We have a target of getting it to the next local hot rod meet on 7th August, which includes the need to register it! A stretching target, but I think we'll get there. Also I wont be leaving this forum, I've made some good friend here and like it, so will just be slipping into the 47 to 59 message board with my Apache, I'm sure you'll still talk to me??? Target for end of this week (sunday) is stopping and driving under it's own power. |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Good news for you Andy.
I hope Ratz takes over the build thread and continues to update as he goes along. |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
47 - 59! ......I'm sure we'll still talk to you  and as Ratz has bought your truck we'll have another member on here from Blighty:bann:

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
well spent most of the day faffing about with the exhaust, try to get it to clear the axle when raised or lowered. Wish I'd thought about lifting the wood bed up sooner, that certainly made it easier.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psnrprg3b7.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psrqeuvo2q.jpg As it's now going twin rear silencers had to cut and shut the Y piece and various angled elbows to the 2 rear silencers, what a pig of a job, must have cut and trimmed the tube 20 times, each times with a trial fit. But think I have it sussed now and will assembly tomorrow. Oh and i think the bed wood will come up nice with a bit of sanding and vanish :-) |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
It's a shame you have sold it . But as the others have said if Ratz is taking over the build thread that's great . I like you have made some good friends on this forum . If you do start a build thread for your 59 post the link on here before Ratz takes over . Good luck with the other builds .

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
found a use for some of the rotten bed wood that keeps falling out on my head when I'm underneath it :-)
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psjvfviph5.jpg Mark came round this weekend to do some more work with me on the truck, he prep'd one of the rear side and then painted. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps1oupp0ih.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps2u84jgx8.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pscvzkn97j.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psw9keqkqp.jpg I finished off the exhaust system, sounds real nice and a deep rumble. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswwm8tzad.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psokphlx8j.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psmzyxi3zv.jpg Also made new front brake lines and got all gears forward and reverse whilst on axle stands |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Looking good Andy
Are you still going to do the paint work patina ? The rear exhaust looks good it'll be a shame to see the truck go but I guess with the two other projects on the go I can see why . |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Yep patina to follow:metal:

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Andy the truck is really taking shape, aren't you regretting selling it?........... I am and it's not even my truck

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
No, because I'll still get to see it at hot rod shows as he doesn't live far away. It will be like my mistress!
I still have theses to play with http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...100_3088-2.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pse59bae9f.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psd278565a.jpg But back to the C10, Ran the compression check today 150 PSI on 5 cylinders and 144 PSI on the last, pleased with that. Also found the inlet manifold not seated correctly, which explains the rough running. Tomorrow going to strip and rebuild the carb as I think the needle valve is stuck open as it's dumping neat fuel in the inlet manifold, it was like a lake of fuel! |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Hey boys,
As Andy has said i don't live all that far away from him, and believe me i will be round his more often than he thinks lol. But on a more serious note i will be keeping up the thread and cannot wait to have it on the road and just maybe meet up with you all, as you have been so kind to Andy and the truck. Over with Andy tonight and working on the rubbing down and paint finish Intentions for next year is to drive it down to Le Manns |

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Mark was round again today with his girlfriends son Ben, who was a great help with body prep and sanding (put me and Mark to shame). Must get some action shots next time, rather than after we have finished.
The blue paint was a bit too glossy so Mark had the paint guy added a matting agent, which has made it look a lot better. As usually I was in charge of the less obvious work, such as new brake lines and rebuilding the carb, which still managed to over fuel, so think we need to bite the built and get a carb rebuild kit and new brass float to replace the plastic float which according to a little bit of google research apparently deteriorate with fuel over time. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps29ejag2m.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psxwlth5of.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psgehoz0ku.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psworj7mef.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psywgp74mq.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psjkxwsiei.jpg removed the scuttle panel to fit new washer hose and clean the jets, whilst it was off gave the panel a coat of new paint. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psjv41fjme.jpg The bonnet (hood) had too many layers of paint and filler that had got moisture underneath so decided to strip and reveal the horrors underneath. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszsu82ifw.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswojhgbfm.jpg and that was it for another day. |

more parts ordered from USA :-) But now the 2 week wait :-(
still plenty to do ........................if it ever stops RAINING !!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Aha, but I've realised one thing you can do really well whilst it's raining heavy!
Colour sand the read bed..................and yes, my neighbours now know i'm bonkers:metal: |

Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
having fitted and removed the exhaust manifold 3 times and tried different new gaskets I couldn't get it to seat properly, having a 0.6mm gap between manifold and gasket on the Siamese'd exhaust ports.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps3vvcvi3d.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswify9y1q.jpg a light misting of matt black spray paint and a flat sanding block revealed the problem. Times like this you wish you owned a milling machine. Alas I dont, some many hours later of flat sanding and filling they are nearly good to put back on. Enlisted the help of the wife and eldest daughter to paint strip the hood, think they did a better job than the boys at the weekend. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psht8gwnh3.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pscardbzcf.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psc60j0kin.jpg |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Mark came round tonight with his new 16" smoothies, so we gave one a quick rattle can paint job and swapped the tyre just to get the look. He's also going to order some chrome hub caps too.
http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psscxmj3rh.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psr74k2aix.jpg meanwhile at the front of the truck the manifold is back on and not leaking :metal: |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Wheel and tire looks good .
|
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Bit more tonight. Mark bought himself a power sanded so carried on with the never ending body prep.
We got some heat into the front bumper with a gas torch and with the combination of wooden blocks and a scissor jack between the back of the bumper and tyre got both side of the bumper straightened out nicely. flushed with this success decided it was time to start the welding for the MOT, for now patches will do. As maybe on the drivers side we'll fit a full rocker (inner and out) over the winter. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps6w5f0qhe.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswhehkmck.jpg |

Diggin' the progress...:mm:
Metal work...:metal: |
Re: Uber Cool's 1963 C10 LWB Fleetside in England
Normally I'd do the steel work first, but since it had been laid up for so long and I needed to know what parts to order from US, as lead time can be 1 to 2 weeks on bigger parts. Whereas steel work is just raw materials, time and a bit of skill.
Resumed today on the drivers side floor, I was try to retain the rear section where the floor meets the rocker, but the more I looked the more it just needed to be cut out. So first the hole got bigger..always a worrying time http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswqd4mgjc.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psuthf7kbq.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pspndkoiwg.jpg I bought the inner rocker panels off Martin since he'd got his better cab. It was just the top section that was rotten, where the door seal sits, so cut the panel down to just you the upper stepped section. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps2izgious.jpg I didnt have any repair panels for the floor so cut up some sheet metal and used my bender to fabricate the repair section http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pszsgdk4ye.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pswflljvbu.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psfpbbdnxl.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps35fmrzsd.jpg then made the front section of the floor in one piece. http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...pskahw66qp.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...psht9wzn8y.jpg http://i216.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps6lxkzqy8.jpg Next I need to make a section for the bottom of the door post and repair the top section of the rocker and fabricate a lip for the door seal to attach to. Then when I have it all together I'll seam weld it all, grind down flat and seal and paint. Hopefully have this side completed this week. |
