Bought a Cab Step for the '59 :metal:
Bought a Left Cab corner :metal: New Dome light :metal: Working on one side at a time Should be getting the bottom of the door and door skin soon Then its Door hing cover..Then pockets |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Always nice to get the new patch panels, now the work begins...
I would fix the doors first, hinge pocket if needed and get them aligned to the cab. Then then do the corner and step, bracing the upper part if necessary to keep the alignment. A few guys have had to modify the doors because the lower cab moved around during repair. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
The Dome lights wiring is completely different than what is on the truck right now?
Can't find the wiring since I took the dome light off.Found out the issue with the gauges moving when I turned on the headlight switch, Some wire I had grounded to the fuse box... When I took it off when the headlight switch was on the gauges went back to normal.. I believe it goes to the Heater(NOT SURE) But when I turn on the headlights I could turn the Heater on and when they were off I couldn't really weird ... Got a Cab corner as well Buying Door things here soon |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Dome light should be orange wire and white wire, running from the light switch up the front door ("A") pillar then around the top/side to the dome hole. Don't pull the wires out of the pillar, it can be a challenge to get them back up there. If the headliner is out and the wires are AWOL bend up a wire and start fishing down between the inner and outer cab above the door, you should hook them. I had to do this when I used the old wires to pull in the new harness.

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
The old Factory dome light was a Single prong connector like on the ignition switch. How do I hook it up? What end do I need
Does one of the wires go to the fusebox? if so the wires are way way too short |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
got to tell man probably would be easier if you bought a new wiring harness. new harness is around $140 plus few extra dollars for misc. but youll be all new and pretty I put one in my truck had a few hiccups but I'm pretty happy

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100

Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
just those 2 parts? where'd you go
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
To a well known truck place around here, about 40 mins away. I'm going to buy the Door parts next.Next week I am going to hopefully get the truck in my name Officially !!!
I'll get a new Front bed panel as well. Just can't wait to see how all of this looks after all of the welding work |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
With the title in hand it should not be any problem getting it titled "officially" in your name. If you have someone else doing the welding make sure all the old rust is removed and not the new panel layed over the old. I've seen that before.

ground wire from the dome light goes back to the light switch white ground for dome light if you add door switches hook them to the white ground for dome light there is no fuse in the circuit only the bimetal spring for overload protection that protects the brake and tail lights if you need to run new wires to the dome light use plastic strapping like what is used to strap packages for a fish tape run it up the drivers side windshield pillar and pull 2 wires down http://www.classicchevy.com/assets/i...hevy/25-01.jpg |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
The orange also has a second wire that is power to the dome, see post 122.

Just went out to crank the '59 it started up with no hard start, and you could press the gas.. Looks like H-A's and Geralds old truck is on it way.. Trucks about to be in a News article so stay tuned !!!
Pretty excited for all of this to happen Sent the carb to a Fellow member on 55-59 Chevy trucks, and he rebuilt it and the truck cranked right up. I can't wait to cruise in it tomorrow and see what it does |

Me and the truck have a unstable relationship at times, but I won't give up on it |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I'm stumped on some things
Put a new fuel pump in and its still not pumping fuel.. I wish more people would respond |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Ok did u check your tank maybe blow a little air in the line that's before the pump still a issue try running a line from pump to a gas can to isolate the problem
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Make sure fuel is getting to the pump like lowrodderchev said. The tank outlet could be plugged and so could the line. If you have fuel to the pump check your lines to the carbs and your fuel filter to make sure none of those are clogged or restricted. Its a basic system so tracing your way through it you should be able to find the problem. A blow gun will be useful here.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
This thread pretty much gave you the road map for figuring out what is wrong.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=633007 Go back and review and test the system from your plastic tank to the carb, opening each fitting in sequence: line from tank to pump, pump outlet, fuel line to carb. Also make sure that the carb bowl is primed, if is has been sitting for a while without running the gas has evaporated out the vent, saves time and battery and starter life not having to grind away while the pump fills the float bowl. |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
I put a new fuel hose that goes into the tank..checked the fitting i blew through it and put a piece of paper towel at the end before the pump it blew out..so it couldn't be clogged up.When the money comes in, I am going to have new fuel lines put on before I put the new tank in
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
Are you gravity feeding the fuel from a bottom tank fitting or are you trying to pull the gas up through the tank filler opening. A stock mech fuel pump has a hard time siphoning. I used a temp outboard motor fuel tank with a fuel squeeze ball to prime the mech pump.
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
The hose goes into the opening. it worked fine until, I put the rebuilt carb on there. It cranked up fine, and then eventually no gas what so ever. I am going to put new, fuel lines in when I put a new tank in
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
it sounds like your rebuilt carb might be the problem. Maybe a dirty seat or needle, fuel filter in backwards or your float isn't operating properly. I've rebuild many carbs and you will run into problems like this from time to time. I'd be starting with that carb if I was you
|
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
It is not the carb, I put a mason jar after the pump to see if it'd pump gas and it didn't do one drop. I may just end up buying new fuel lines for the future, so I won't have to worry about debris or rust getting into the pump
I may just try putting more gas into the tank, I know I will need a new fuel line from the pup to carb as the current one isn't lining up, and rig it behind the thermostat so it is easier access |
Re: Project "Schrum" 1959 Gmc 100
any luck?
