1959 Apache 3600, av8tr33337, Thank you.
oldman3, I have done my fair share of useing what I have. My other buddy has a 4 foot slip roll and my work has a 8 foot brake. The rest I have. My boss bought the brake because he knew I was looking for one. It saved me the $1800. It has made more hot rod parts than work stuff.HAHA AUSSIE54, WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO SAY! Haha. no, really me to. I think I will be all right because everything go off the headlight trim. Plus I can measure off from the other side. I will see come Sunday. That is when I am going to do the other one. That way I can stay on it and not break it up between nights. Tonight I will get some pictures of my metal working arsonal. Then I am going to gap the drivers door. That way I can turn it around and do the other door and then the next headlight brow. I have to finish welding the firewall in and I have to shear some pieces so that I can remove the seam down the middle of the hood. Need I do not know what is next. Shannon |

All right here is the requested tool arsenal pictures. The first is my 5 ft sheet metal brake I made probably 15 years ago and stuffed behind it is my horizontal band saw. Next is my mill drill and drill press. The next one is my roll cage bender I made at the shop I work at now and chop saw. The little thing on it with the rollers is to roll 1" box tube. You can put an arch on it. The next one is My MIG and my plasma cutter. I would be lost without both of them. The next one is my bead roller and the TIG welder and my air compressor.

Next one is the dies I made for my bead roller. I made the bead roller over 10 years ago but last year I powered it. I should have done that years ago. I have the AD belt line die, 1/4 bead die, 1/8 step die, 3/16 step die, and a tipping die. I made them all on a manual lathe. The next picture are the dies I made for my air planishing hammer and the way I hand finish my 1/4 beaded sheet metal. The next one is the 2 woodward fab hand shears and my beltsander. The next one is my air planishing hammer I made and my stretcher/shrinker. The last one is my one drawer in my big tool box. It has my Dagger tools hammer and dolly set , poly mallets, 8" sand bag, and a bunch of other sheet metal tools. I also have a large Dagger tools sand bag. I have a large english wheel that I started and have not finished it yet. I have Hoosier patterns lower dies because it was cheaper to buy them than me to hard cut and heat treat. Hpoe you all enjoyed the picture and if you want any more info just ask. That is all stuffed in a 20'x20' garage. I need more space!

99 to Life, I am a tool junkie. I love tools. I have bought a lot of them in the past 5 years. When I need to do something I usually buy what I need. Then I have it for the next project.
Tonight I started gaping the doors. They were tight all the way around mostly except the to because when I shaved the drip rail I gaped that then. So I lined up the door and started with the back. I ground it back and then welded the edge. I like to have between 5/32 and 3/16 gap. To grind them I use a small slitter wheel with a 36 grit disc along side of it. It gives the sanding disc a backer but does not cut with the slitter wheel. Because you can not use the rubber backer because it is too thick. And grind till you are happy with the gap. A good way of checking it is with the back of a drill bit. Shannon |
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
You do amazing work in a very small space!

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Shannon, thanks for the tool display, nice job on the door gap. I do mine the same way but I use a paint stick to check my gap....Jim

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
BlueJeep, Thank you, I need to find out about adding on this summer. But hate to deal with the township. I know I could build it. But knowing all about the BOCA codes, what a pain. I might just have them rough frame it and then I will finish it.
Rods57, Thank you, I can not wait till I have the other side done so I can stand back and see the finished product. oldman3, No problem on the tool display. I heard of using a paint stick before. Shannon |

I ended up almost getting the headlights all done today. I also had to fix where someone else welded up the light hole on the top of the fender. It had something globed to the bottom so out it came. On the passengers side I have to make/weld in the fill piece for under the eye brow to the fender. Then the headlights are done except for the upper screw pads. They are even for as much as I can tell. I measured them out and they are right on. Then back to gaping the doors and a few other things.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Man, What can I say?
Those headlights are awesome! what a look!!! |
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Hah, I just assumed when I first read this thread that they were 55-57 pickup eyebrows...
After you finished both sides i realized that they were car brows, VERY well done! great custom touch, without being ruining any of the original lines Bravo! |
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
OMG... they are not 55-57 brows?
that's exactly what I thought too... still cool but a bubble popper for my brainski. ha ha |
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
G'day Shannon,
Swell work again there mate. They look sharp in the photos. Geez it gets your mind ticking over with all of the ideas that can be gained through the forums. I just love the look of what you've done there, but then I also like 'em frenched as well as just standard! Oh the decisions,… what to do…what to do! I just have been checking out the door treatments on the crew cab Coe that mr pops has put on the 'pics of 47-59 crewcabs' thread. Certainly has got my mind ticking over! Great job again there on those brows mate! Are you happy with them? Any thoughts on doing the same treatment to one of your own trucks? Anyway have a good one, I'll be catching up with you. oldman3, Atommik, sgtusmc, Daze57, drivea55, Thank you very much.
britnjc, Thank you. If you do try it, let me know if you need any pointers and I will tell you how I did it. Glad you got your box. Larry Lindley, blitz'd, Thank you, don't sell all your tools. You can drink and work at the same time. That is what I do when I get stressed! Maximus, drivea55, jimig1, Thank you. No they are 55/56 car brows. I think the truck ones have a body line in them and that is why you use the car ones. I am glad they are both done so now I can see the finished product. AUSSIE54, Thank you. Yes, I really like them but boy what a lot of work. On mine I welded the trim rings on and made special buckets with adjusters in the fender well. Then fill the seam on the trim ring so it smooths everything out and paint everything. I know what you mean with the forums, so much good ideas and information. Now when you work on yours again you better cut out that center post and start over.HAHA. Yes, we have to talk soon. Shannon |

Finally got back in the garage tonight. Last Tuesday my wife told me that the living room ceiling was wet. The bath room is right above, so out with the sawzall. Ended up cutting up 1/3 of the bathroom floor to fix the water pipes. I had to run them from the basement to the second floor. So now the sink, tub and toilet all have new plumbing. Thank god that I have as many wood working tools as metal tools so I had all the tools I needed. I only had to buy a small tubing cutter because mine was to big to go around the pipe. Yes i am a tool junkie. The drain for the tub was also bad so that got replace as well. I also put in a new sink and cabinet. Which as my luck has it, it also broke in half and had to get another one. I got a defective one naturally. It was not a good week! But as of yesterday it is mostly done. It really stinks we live in a house with only one bathroom. So back to the truck tonight. I finished up gaping the drivers door. It has a 5/32 gap around it now. It fits a lot better now. Next is the passengers door.

Dude! im tired just reading this
|
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
if it isn't one thing it is ten others. I feel you on that. the doors look great, I like the attention to detail you use. however, when you use the weather strip, how are you going to keep it all nice and flush like you have it? When I put weather striping in, it really made the doors fit like crap, so I gotta get on fixing all that.

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Great job on the gaps xpickup!
We all like a good gap over here too! Regards, Trently. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Shannon, seem like life has a way with messing with us:pty:, but as usual you took care of the problem. Nice job on the doors.....Jim

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
britnjc, It is never a dull moment at my house.
99 to Life, I know what you mean, Yes, I thought of the weatherstripping deal. If the factory is to thick then he will just run some of the aftermarket self stick stuff. At least the gap are even. AUSSIE54, Thank you. Did you cut that center pillar out yet. HAHA Larry Lindley, Thank you. Just think how great they would look after a 24 pack. oldman3. Thank you. I have had a bad last 6 months with water. Roof, flooded basement, and now the bathroom plumbing. My 80 year old house should be good as new for a while! Shannon |

On to the passenger door now. I have the back of the door gap fixed and started on the front now. I should have the door finished after work tomorrow. Then I have to finish the 55 brow on the underside on the passenger side and make the tabs that the screws on the headlight bezel mount to on both sides at the top. Then finish welding the fire wall. Then straighten the hood and remove the center seam. I am also putting in a 55 chevy gauge bezel, so I have to modify the dash for that. Then this weekend I am going to cut out the corner windows on a bad cab and turn another buddies good cab into a five window in the near future. I am addicted to these trucks!

Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
Shannon, door looks great, looking forward to seeing the hood work and how you handle it.....Jim
|
Re: 1948 Chevy / S10
oldman3, Thank you. This time I am going the cut the whole step formed center out and put a 1.5" piece in. I will do it in pieces that way the hood does not loose its shape. Then I can hammer and dolly it back to shape. The last one I only welded in 5/8" strip in so it was double thickness and it still had the 90 degree bend on it. I had to grind the 90 degree bend off and then it was still hard to hammer and dolly. That might be the project for the week end.
