Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
So… After way more hours than is probably economic may I present the panel, which….
http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2202.jpg When compared to…. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...1970D2B127.jpg is a vast improvement… However, I appear to have a rather large high spot near the arch which I am pretty sure was part of the original damage to the bed side. To quote the illustrious Mr. James May…Oh Cock… Where I have stuck another bit of Martins truck into the flanks I have a rather low spot but that is a bit easier to fix with a heat gun and a spot of Mr Isopons finest. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2200.jpg Decided that I am making things worse by chasing the dents and pin holes so am going to wait until my good friend Mr J ( he of classic Porsche restoration fame) comes and makes it all wonderful. Or less like a fat girls arse… During all of the pulling, pushing, welding, grinding, welding. grinding, swearing etc I made a bit of an interesting discovery. Can you spot what it is yet? http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...IMG_2196_1.jpg The bed side ‘stay’ on the damaged side was different by a total of over 2”, not sure, but it looks like a rear stay. Anyway, quick measure. Cut, File, and stuck in a fixture http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2198.jpg all was good and managed to get the panel pretty much where I wanted it. Well apart from the high spot… Grrr…. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...IMG_2199_1.jpg Now embarking on the next repair before the bed goes back on using, this… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2213.jpg this… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2214.jpg and, most importantly this. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2215.jpg Stay tuned Campers! P. 😃 |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Looking for a little advice.
The bed damage was not the sum total of Woody's woe's. The B pillar had a fail hefty whack as well. Managed to pursuade the vast majority of the metal back into shape using the above but am struggling with the inner mounting surface, the bit that the cab corner attaches too. It doesn't matter how hard I hit it, how big the slide hammer or, indeed, the volume of swearing, it refuses to move. Or rather it does but seems to spring back to its damaged position. As per everyone's advice I am working the dent backwards ( last area to move the first to be pushed back) but it is this first area of impact that is not playing ball. Any advice on what I can try? Have pictures but had enough of it tonight.... Grrrrr..... P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Paul if any more of my old truck goes on your truck , you'll need to put my name on the log book
|
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
OK, Because I have now had a medicinal glass of Corona I am going to throw these pictures up and hope somebody can advise.
These are all before the beating commenced. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2209.jpg In this you can see the original damage, the part I am struggling with is the 'middle' and outer piece.Managed to get the inner (left hand side of the picture) pushed out and looking ....meh... but the rest of it wont move. So, all you super heros of the metal shaping world, how do I fix that! P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Personally Paul I would cut out the panel straighten it and fit it back , or you could replace the bottom section with an outer rocker panel .
|
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
didn't you cut out a big enough piece from the other truck cab ?
so that you cut can out your crushed part and weld in the straight rear post from the parts cab ? if not then maby you can drill a hole and put a nut n bolt with a loop to attach a come a long to , to winch the crushed area out . it may help to heat it with a torch while pulling to make it bend back ezr . |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Hi Jim,
I have the whole b pillar from Martins truck but wanted to see if I could avoid replacing a 'structural' part. My experience with bodywork is pretty limited, if i were to replace the lower part of the b pillar where would be the best place to splice it in do you think? P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Paul, from the picture this looks like it will pull or perhaps more easily push out, cutting the spot welds on the outer rocker will help. Moving multiple layers welded together will often act either like a leaf spring or a laminated piece of wood

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
So… Tried this.
http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2225.jpg With some help from a nicely drilled hole and this http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2226.jpg And achieved the square root of Diddly Squat… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2229.jpg This was the same as several hours of using blocks of wood, large hammers etc. So, took a big deep breath, pulled on my Big Girl Pants http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...2-10-22-47.jpg And… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2233.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2234.jpg Which also harvested me. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2216.jpg That was hiding in the inner sill and a whole load of Californian dirt. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2219.jpg Wonder if I paid extra for that… Anyway, Martins truck keeps on giving so I have this http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2232.jpg to replace the cut out portion once I work out where to make the cut on the sill line. With everything out of the way I have managed to persuade the inner panel into shape. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2236.jpg Not perfect but a lot better than before and still more thumping to do. Good job I had a really awful day at work and threw the towel in at 1pm for a little garage R&R. Further advice, encouragement or general Urine taking greatly accepted. P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
A little "afternoon therapy" is good. Nice job, its looking better.
|
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Well, as mentioned, at this rate you may have to change ownership docs or logbook soon.
I get what you did walking away from the desk. Nice job. |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
I must invest in a camera as my iPhone makes it look like everything is covered in rust and decay when it is actually all pretty clean!
Anyway will be coating the sills in Waxoil before assembly, should be good for another 50 years... P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Looks good Paul as I said earlier and Ian had made the same comment . The only way to repair the inner was to remove the outer, but worth it . Repairing the inner and outer in metal is so rewarding . Best of all when you shut the door you won't be worrying that half a ton of filler (bondo) won't fall out .
|
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Thanks Martin,
My body work skills are pretty limited but I am viewing this as 'I cant make it any worse!' and just giving it a go. Found that looking at it for a while then walling away and coming back means that I have really considered how and whyI am going to do something. Doesn't always work but I can see an improvement in my repairs. Current status... Relaxed... P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
if you cant get the inner part straight enough , then I would replace enough of it to fix all of the damaged area .
my job is doing auto body repairs for around 40 years now. so it seems ez for me to do it . look at it for the best place to splice it to repair all damaged area with the least amount of work . and make shore that everything lines up good before welding anything. you did good on the bed side repair so I know that you can do it. |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Jim, Would appreciate you view on this.
After a lot of bumping the ‘new’ section does not fit, indicating that the inner panel is still twisted somewhere. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2242.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2241.jpg So. This is my thought on repairing. I have the B pillar from Martins truck. Unfortunately the bottom is corroded beyond repair below the first captive nut. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2240.jpg Therefore this is my plan. Cut the panel along the blue line. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2238.jpg Use the original lower part of the B panel to repair the replacement. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2239.jpg Weld the new panel back in. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2237.jpg I am making the cut at this height as it is where the final bit of damage ends Does that make sense? Or how would you approach this repair. Again, advice welcome. P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
That would make sense to me, using as much of Martins panel as possible is a good idea because a) it's straight and b) the lower weld will be easier to hide.
It will be a nice repair when it's finished  |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Thanks Ian, I was trying to avoid cutting this much out but after sitting and looking at it for a few hours I think this is the only way I am going to be happy with the fitment.
Multiple deep breaths and numerous pairs of pants will be put into action tomorrow evening. If it goes wrong I blame the Internet.... P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Paul that sounds good . that is what I would do also .
remember to check and make shore everything is lined up real good before any welding. then put just a couple small tack welds to hold it in place and check it again before you finish welding it for good . its much ezr to remove a tack weld or two than your finished weld . |

How would I approach it......??? Seeing as I have not started on that part of my truck........ Nervously. I do not really know Paul, but we both know that you need a replacement panel of sorts. Just a pity you, cannot buy one form a member on here, or that someone does not have the complete lump of cab to donate to your progress as the fun of the big girl pants really should be reserved for Friday evenings. :four::four: Watching with trepidation |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Rian,
I have the right panel (just needs a little...love...) What I need is some of what this chap possesses... http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t.../hqdefault.jpg P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Quote:
That or pay someone to do it Paul . Mind you my dad always said if you want it done right learn to do it yourself . You can do it just take your time . |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Martin,
Not paying somebody to do it that is for sure! Watch this space... P. :D |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Paul you can do it . it will be ezr than you think
once you get the damaged rear post removed . cut the lower part off the old post and use it to repair the rusted part of the new post that your putting in. remove the damaged rear post > before you cut the one your replacing it with so you can use the old one to mark where to cut the one your replacing . if your worried when cutting the new part , then leave it a little bit longer at the top so you can trim it to get a perfect fit with no gap . PS : before you cut the rusty bottom part off of the old post measure from the welded nut up 1 or 2 inches and put a reference mark on both posts so you will be able to check to make shore the bottom part you replace on the new post is lined up in the same spot it needs to be . |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Well. Taking a leaf out of my fury friends book I have grown a pair of Cajones. And a new cutting disk…
http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2244.jpg No going back now… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2246.jpg Purposefully made the cut a lot lower down than the ‘blue line’ as todays task was to repair the bottom section of the replacement B pillar. With thanks to Jim and a few others I had thought long and hard about how I was going to ensure that these two holes… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2243.jpg …Lined up after surgery. So I knocked up this fixture using existing holes in both panels. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2247.jpg Once I knew I could line it all back up I cut out the cotton bit of the good panel…Chop Chop http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2249.jpg Tacked the new bit in place with the fixture http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2250.jpg Yes I know it is not the tightest fit…. And…Taa- Daa!! http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2253.jpg Utilised the old sill to show it is all still lined up. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2255.jpg And threw some rust converter on it ahead of Phase 2. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2256.jpg That took me the best part of 3 hours so I am not going to be making a living out of this anytime soon. But! After the rather unpleasant couple of days I have had doing this has really relaxed me. Better than spending time in the Pub and Mrs Y knows where I am because she can hear the grinding, banging and general bad language from her seat on the sofa. So… Stay tuned for the next update which will probably be at the weekend. Phew! P. :D |

great job I knew you could do it .

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Hello Paul!
Repair looking good! Less than a week until I head to Seattle and pick up mine! Getting excited! A quick question, what did you do about headlights? Can they be swapped for a standard Lucas unit? Same as on an old spitfire/mini etc? Cheers Danny |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
That turned out really well Paul , love the fixture, simple but very effective.

Cheers Paul,
I'll start a thread this weekend, will be cool to upload some pics of it when I collect it! |

Garage time now. |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Right!
Phase 2, in which my Cajones grow to the size of Cantaloupes as I use the awesome power of Mr Grinder and Mrs Welder…. After sitting on my favourite milk crate for a good 45 minutes I reconsidered my cut line as I wanted to make sure that the join for the B pillar and the cab skin did not over lap - not sure if it is relevant but it just sort of seemed like a good idea. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2257.jpg With the panel mocked up, securely bolted to the sill I took another 45 minutes looking, measuring and taking deep breaths until I could feel the power emanating from my loins reach sufficient levels to make the final cut… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2258.jpg Held in place with the finest Unicorn Poop - and a pair of dodgy mole grips and a panel clamp… Quite pleased… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2259.jpg Managed to tighten the gaps up a bit by moving the pillar up on the bolts. but not before I checked that the sill panel fitted. New http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2260.jpg Old http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2241.jpg VICTORY!!!!!!!!!!!! And here it is all stuck together with more Unicorn Poop and Rainbow Kisses…. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2261.jpg Little bit more grinding will get that looking lovely… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2262.jpg And the Money Shot… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2263.jpg Have to thank everyone for their encouragement and advice on undertaking what, for me anyway, was a pretty major task. Having got this bit in I am feeling rather good - think it is time for a celebratory beer and the 50th Episode of RoadKill! Hope to get the cab panel all sorted over the weekend, but things change rapidly here at Chez Y so we will see. BAM! P. :D |

your making good progress !!

Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Well, at this rate, you may have a list of trucks to weld on soon.
Nice job. |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
Nice job on the door jamb. You made it look easy!
Good to have the advice of an experienced bodyman like 60chevyjim. |
Re: The English are coming! Or..another C10 in the Motherland.
I never knew that body work was so mentally and physically taxing… I am knackered.
Right, lets pick this up from Saturday morning. The rather wonderful Lady P told me that it was pointless spending a week of nights getting the repair finished, and the knock on effect this had on my working week, why didn't I just spend the weekend finishing it off? I was quick to take full advantage of this but not before I had procured 2 bottles of a rather nice white to ensure that the path to the shed was properly…lubricated.. I know I have said this before but this was the hardest cut I have made to date. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2264.jpg I ummed and ahhed on this one for ages. Do I make a smaller cut and leave the slightly crumpled area or bite the bullet and chop it all out to the good. Suppose that picture answers that one! With the cut made I trimmed down the last bit of Martins truck to fit the hole. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2265.jpg Problem was I couldn't get it to fit as I wanted it. There was too big a gap around the top and getting the swage line to line up around the back of the cab was causing all sorts of issues http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2266.jpg Martins panel had some fairly heavy rust issues at the cab bottom and Woodys bottom was a bit beaten and full of filler (narf narf) so I decided to make that repair once I had everything else done as it would/should be easier to melt them together once everything else was lined up. More of that later… More pushing and more cutting http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2267.jpg but still not happy until I just decided to drill a few holes and use self tappers to hold it in place whilst I tacked it together. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2269.jpg Still not perfect but getting there http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2270.jpg Nearly! They say that out of the mouths of Babes and Children comes forth truth… Well after sitting looking at the pigs ear I had made of cutting the panel and still not getting it to fit, my youngest son ventured forth into the night with a beer and stern words from Lady P that I was taking the P at 10.30pm. His comment? I’ll hold, it you tack it. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2271.jpg And just like that it all lined up! Sure the Beer helped…. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2273.jpg Fast forward to this evening because I am fairly sure you are all bored with my ramblings may I present… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2274.jpg All buzzed in. I knew it was time to call it quits as the more astute amongst you will notice the rather odd pattern to the welds on the lower repair patch… Yup, forgot to turn the gas on… Gap pretty good. http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...Y/IMG_2275.jpg Still got to finish off the bottom and tidy up the sill ahead of putting that patch in but quite please compared to what was there before… http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...3760FF8D68.jpg http://i615.photobucket.com/albums/t...4C90AB5E54.jpg Bit annoyed with myself that I warped the top of the panel (will be hidden behind the bed) but,if I had paid to have the work done, there would have been a layer of Glenn Miller over it and I would never have known. At my work rate I hope to have this all finished by Tuesday evening at which time I will stop boring you all with this particular stage of body work and go back to talking about interesting stuff. So, on that bomb shell…Goodnight!! P. :D Just noticed that this is my 400th post - time to go and enjoy the other bottle of that rather good white! |
