Hey Rogue 64, where's the Killboy.com pix taken? The only place that I've seen his crew is on the Dragon.

I don't get on miata.net much. It's been a few months. I spend most of my computer time here.

Nice pix

Hey!! I did somethings done today. I got my front fenders and core support test fitted today. Everything bolted right up. I'm very pleased with how everything fits.

Looks like y'all have more than one, we have 5.

Thanks to sdailey for his help today.

I will post some pix once the site gets straightened out or you can go to my picture link in my signature.

It was a hard top and someone tried to make a convertble out of it. It's at Bob's Impalas and he said he's not saving this one. It was only 30 minutes from the house. I got lucky finding it.

I love it!! Easy clean up and once the material that is extra setups up in the PPS liner it is not hazardous anymore (they say) since it is a solid. It's a little pricey, but it is worth it to me. I use 3M brand but there are some others that are cheaper. Plus you can spray at any angle without drips.

Ok everybody I'm going to spill the beans on Alan. I'm his neighbor and I've watched him work on this truck since he first towed it home. He plays this little modest, naive body man act pretty good. Don't let him fool you about his talent. This guy is good. I've watched him in action and it comes pretty easy for him. Plus, he has every tool known to man. So don't fall victim to his "pity" story about him not being any good.

Thanks fellas.

I don't know if I believe sdailey or not. For you see I was having trouble with my new chain fall. The chains were in the way. I was just going to tie them back to the wall and then he said just hang a bucket on the hook to hold the chains. Now who is the smart one and who is the naive one?:haha:

glad I was watching and not a participant.

What failed the chain fall itself?

jonzcustomshop 09-09-2008 07:30 AM

Re: My 1965 build thread

yeah the chain did not break, whatever style ratcheting mechanism that was in there just stripped out and let the chain go,hence the sparks as the chain shot through there!
That motor was about 4 1/2 feet off the ground , and it hit the cement in 1 second, bounced a tad and fell on its side.
I think the weight limit was way exceded, and it was kinda worn out too.....

I've been busy, but not all of my time was spent on the truck. The bottom of the cab is getting a little closer to being done. I have to patch the left rear cab support and finish the filler.

I painted my wifes 92 sunburst yellow (only 1519 made). This is the last personal project other than my truck. Maybe I can concentrate on my truck more now. On-the-other hand, I've got a couple people in line to get some body work done. I've got to put a trunk floor pan in a 65 Buick GS (I think that is what it is). The other one is replace a quarter panel and do a complete color change on a Miata.

Since my build is slow and boring at this stage, I thought why not make it informational. Since I'm a bodyman why not share some of my knowledge. Every bodyman has his or her own way of doing things and by no means do I know everything. What I will talk about works for me. Give me some feeback on this. If it's not any help to anyone then I won't do anymore.

These pix are from what I was working on tonight. I only had time to block on one door.

The first pic is an assortment of blocks and air tools. There are numerous blocks on the market. You can get creative in making a block that works best for you. In the pic there is long 3/4" PVC pipe covered with file paper to block the inside long curves. I also made up a 18" wood block (ash) ran it thru a joiner to get a true flat side. I'm using it to block my doors.

Once I prime I dust a light coat of black paint called guide coat to assist in showing low spots as seen in the pic.

If this is helpful, let me know and I will keep posting info like this as I go.

Alan, thats great informationk, that would be great if you could give us little hints on things that will make life easier on us trying to do bodywork. My question is when you are blocking the area do you go in a criss-cross motion over the area? Any help would be greatly appreciated, keep up the great work, thanks Michael from Arizona.:metal:

nice addition alan, I think a post like this will help some.
this is where the cost of your paint job starts taking off. lots of labor in sanding.

look forward to more tips and pointers.

Michael,
Thanks for the feedback. You do want to go in a criss cross pattern as much as possible with steady pressure. Let the sand paper do the work. Choosing the right block is pretty important. Take my door for example, you wouldn't want to use a 6" block on a big area like that. Remember lots of patience (sp).

Here is the paint scheme I'm thinking about. I changed the color to hugger orange, it used to be white. The stripes and wheels are like a charcoal grey.

I'm thinking Orange all over including the inside the cab and engine bay. The charcoal will be on the top, inside the side trim, wheels, frame and highlights on the impala dash. All of the bolt on pieces on the frame will be a gloss black.

I like your idea here of sharing what works for you for blocking. Have you used the "Durablock" brand of samding boards? I bought one this year while working on a new bed for my '98 Chevy. I liked it for what I was doing. The neat thing for me was that when using the adheasive backed file paper, you can tape a strip of it down on a slightly curved surface, then apply the Durablock to that and it will hold that slight curve...

Keep the tips and tricks coming...

Thanks for the tip. I do have a few Durablocks. They are a good product. I don't use them too much. Are very handy when you need them.

I've been trying to figure out how to write text in between my pix, and have not been successful at it.

Here is a link to my body work pics and tips

http://picasaweb.google.com/mx5miata...ickUpBodyWork#

Pic-1
Here is 2 kinds of filler that I have. The rage xtreme is an excellent filler but it is $35-40/gal. It is like thick syrup. The Xgrip is about $10/gal it is alot thicker and harder to spread and has alot of voids. The crust is gummier that the xtreme so it clogs paper more than the other.

Pic-2
This a new primer that I have not used yet. It is made by PPG and have heard good things about it. It's the cheapest of the PPG line.

Pic-3
I skimmed the entire lower section of the door. It's easier to block the entire panel flat than it is too block several areas and make them transition into each other.

Pic-4
Knocked the crust off with a 8" orbital mudhog with 80 grit. It works fast, just let it float over the filler. It will do a pretty good job of leveling.

Pic-5
Black rattle can spray paint dusted over the filler for a guide coat. Ready to block with a long file board with 80.
