Thanks man! How goes it? How's your truck coming along?

Kabwe 03-30-2006 02:20 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

Well man the truck is coming along slowly due to the fact that I been trying revamp my garage (just added a 60 amp subpanel built a storage shed to move some crap out). I also been trying to get the 55 210 ready for a show thats coming up this weekend (I'm not looking farward to polishing those rims, I hate polishing I think for the truck I'm going chrome). You should try to make it out its in Carson, CA on Sunday. It will be cars and trucks there. If you want the info just send me a PM. The show is from 8 to 1:30pm.

Re: 58 GMC Project

The cab is going to be sweet man! I am still consittering red and white two tone myself as an option. I think red is always a good choice!

Kabwe 03-30-2006 02:50 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

Red is a nice choice and things really look good in red, but for me I like to be different. There are just too many red cars or trucks at shows. I must admit the last 55 chevy truck that really made my head spin was red with tan interior and I mean this thing was nice. I have a couple of colors in my head that are gonna rock if I ever get around to finishing the truck. Another thing to think about is metallic vs. non-metallic. I'm personally like non-metallic paint on 50's cars and truck. That’s just a personal preference I’ve seen outstanding trucks painted with metallic. I love orange but its becoming the color around here lately but dang it looks good. Paint and wheels choices are the hardest decision to me because it can make or brake the finally look of the car. Well you can include stances in there also (you air bag people got that licked). Its like with my 55 sedan if I would have painted it red, it would be just another nice white over red 55 sedan. I chose mouse grey and I get so many wonderful comments on the color combo (although I was scared when I chose it). But I do think the combo sucks for photos, grey just does not look good in photos (silver looks better). When people the car in person they can't believe its the same ride.lol

Hey Cal, what can you tell me about this lovely unit here?

Re: 58 GMC Project

Hey Jebb, The unit is from TCI. It's a Corvette style master cylinder and 7 inch booster. I got the unit from an e-bay auction for just over two bills. I had to use a proportioning valve for the disc front/rear. And last, I had all of the brackets powder coated.

Hey kabwe, Sounds like a great show but I have to work this weekend. I know were Carson NV. is, but were is Carson Ca.? Is it in So Cal.? Someday I hope we can hook up at a future show. I am planning for now, if my truck is done, to go to Bothers show in July.

Is that the stock bracket? The set up is georgious!

CAL 58 GMC 03-30-2006 08:11 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

The only thing stock is the mounting location. All of the rest comes with the kit.

Jebb1978 03-30-2006 08:14 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

WOW! I will check those kits out. Thanks as always:)

Hey Carson CA is in So. Cal. Its in the South Bay Area of Los Angeles. I will be at the Brothers Show in July. My truck will not be there but I will. I love going there to get ideas and stuff.

Re: 58 GMC Project

The more I look at what you are doing to that truck the more I like it. It is really coming along. I think you are going have a very nice truck when you’re done. You and 55ChevyPU are really motivating me. Both of you guys are doing some nice work.

Re: 58 GMC Project

Thanks man! I really appreciate your comments. This is a first time I have done a frame off. It's been a lot of hard work, but yet a lot of fun and when fellow hot rodders such as you pay complements on the work I'm doing, it makes all the hard work worth it. I know you know what I mean since I'm sure you get lots of complements on your 55. So Thanks and I hope I run into you at Bothers in July!

Kabwe 03-31-2006 05:13 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

Yeah I know what you mean. It does feel good. The thumbs up, "my father had one of these when I was a kid", " this was my first car when I was in high school" or simply "man that is a nice car". I love this expensive hobby because I get to meet good people (I've also met some a-holes) from all different backgrounds and we have this one thing in common we love old American Steel. I have also gotten help from the most unlikely sources and its taught me to never judge a book by its cover. Ya know human beings can be really cool sometimes.lol

When your choices receive the thumbs up it really feels nice. Because lets face it, we build these things because we like them, but we all have a touch of narcissism and like or ideas to be appreciated.lol

Kabwe, there are alot of Red, Yellow & Black rides out there. After going to a few show over the last few months I keep asking, do I really what to have just another red truck? My chocie in colors are one's that stand out, you know, the ones you spot a mile away and say to yourself, whats that. That's one of the reason I was leaning towards Red. I have had two Yellow trucks and a 1972 Hugger Orange Chevy. Well, I made the change. I went to the body shop and told the guy I'm changing my choice on the color. I am going with a 2001 Plymounth Prower Orange. I saw a 38 Chevy 2 dr. sedan on Barrett Jackson last night pianted that color. WOW it looked sweet!! Here are some pic's.

I like the copper color =]

CAL 58 GMC 04-02-2006 08:00 AM

Re: 58 GMC Project

Some people call it copper, some call it burnt orange, some call it dark metallic orange and some call it prowler orange. All I know is I like the color what ever it's called.:metal:

Re: 58 GMC Project

That is the color that brother painted his Chevy 55 panel truck (the fool sold it) I also have a buddy with a 72 Nova that is that color. It is a nice color you truck will look really nice with that color. I brother's panel truck was this color we called it burnt orange with tan leather interior. The guy that brought the truck painted it midnight blue yuck. He said he got tired of people asking him if it was Paul’s (my brother) truck.lol You would not believe how that color change affected the look of the truck. It was still a nice looking truck but not to people who saw it with the burnt orange paint job. It just lost its flavor. I’m still mad at my brother for selling that one. He could have sold it to me.lol

Also that is one clean Chevy you posted a pic of. Its a guy that comes to our cruise nights that has one like it I thought that was it until I realized that his is a 38 4 door. And man let me tell you I'm not a 4 door man but that sucker is clean, clean, and more clean. He also keeps a toy tommy gun in the back seat.lol

As for me I like these trucks a lot in yellow, a pale yellow (I was going to go there and paint mine yellow), but if I see another yellow 55 I may lose my mine. A old hot rodder told me this and I take it to heart. When I was building my first car and I was talking to him about my color choices and they were all typical colors. He said "yeah that's nice but don't be afraid to be different and don't be afraid of colors it seems everybody is afraid of colors.lol

I'll try and stop by his house this weekend and see if he has some pics. He is an old school gear head that has own some really nice rides through the years so I'm sure he has some pics of all his rides.

I installed a stainless steel frame mount drop down battery box over the weekend. Yesterday I got a Optima battery and Taylor Diamondback Shielded battery cables since they are close to the headers. The body guy said the end of next week he will have color on the cab. Here's pic of the battery box.

Man Cal nice touch! I have never seen those battery cables before. They look really nice.;)

That is a nice looking setup. where did you get the box and cable shielding.

CAL 58 GMC 04-06-2006 06:59 PM

Re: 58 GMC Project

Thanks Jebb & dwcrs. I got the box from CCP and the cables come from Summit Racing, part number TAY-20238 for $18.39 each. The price on the cables is a great price if you ask me.

Re: 58 GMC Project

CAL58GMC,

I hope you are going to drive this thing with all the goodies you are putting on it.lol

I talked to my brother about the pics of the truck and he told me he might have film that he needs to have developed. Man he sold that truck about 5 years ago and never had the film developed.lol That’s my brother for ya.lol

I'm going to go by there this weekend anyway to take pics of this old school chopper he just finished building. I will also see what I can find in the family archives as it relates to classic cars. We had many of them through the years. I need to start taking pics of the family's cars he sucks at it.

Hey kabwe, This truck will be a driver. Even if I had $200,000 dollars in it I would drive it. I don't know how anyone could spend all the time and money and never drive them except when their pull on and off a trailer. So I say buld them, then drive them and enjoy your had work!

I sure hope he took a few pic on that all film he has!:)

Re: 58 GMC Project

Hey Cal what sort of goodies did you use on the frontend? I am looking at PST at the moment but am not 100% decided. I want to get a kit that includes everything and PST seems to have the most complete kits I have seen. Also I am torn on spring choices, I want a Hotchkis set up but am afraid to go any lower (14 inch tires already rub at full turn) all Hotchkis offers is a 2'' drop spring. Your looks nice and I know it's not PST. Whatcha runnin?

Re: 58 GMC Project

Hey Jebb, I used Energy Suspension polyurethane on everything encluding motor & transmission mounts. Just make sure you know the year your clip is. I thought mine was a 1979 and then found out it was a 1980 after trying to install the bushings. They are not the same. Also I'm sending you a PM.

Re: 58 GMC Project

I noticed this may be a problem looking for parts yesterday. I remember the parts car well as it was a shame to carve it up. It was a 1975, has a heavy factory sway bar that I just may use. I have one more question for you. Sorry it never ends I know. As I was looking at the pics of your radiator support brackets I couldn't figure out where they are suppose to go on my truck. That's when I realized that you have square stock welded to the front of your subframe to make it straight like the stock frame and long enough to mount a bumper to. Look at where the steering box mounts to mine in comparison to yours. Yours looks so clean you really have to look to tell they did it. Can you measure from your A-arm to the tip of your frame for me so I can compare and lengthen mine as well?

Re: 58 GMC Project

Jebb, it’s never a problem asking question and anything I can do to help let me know, so ask away. I believe what was done on mine was the front of the original frame was cut off and welded back on the Camaro clip. I measured 23.75 inches from the upper A-arm mounting point. The best way to do it would be to put the fenders back on the radiator support and then put it back on the truck so you can see were the radiator support bracket needs to be welded on the frame. I hope that helps.

I had my truck towed to the muffler shop today and had the exhaust installed. Once I get the bed all done I will have the rest done with tips coming out from under the step on the bed.

You need to put a plexiglass floor in that truck. It a shame to cover up all that nice work

Thanks 55ChevyPU, I saw a 55 Chevy truck with them like that at a car show. They used the flat tips like the one's used on the newer Z-28 Camaro's. I haven’t got the taillight buckets yet, I've been real busy and just haven’t had the time to order them yet. Hows your coming along?
