You've made some great progress on your truck!

I have a question, why did you use the trailing arms and front crossmember off of the 72 donor truck? Could you just transfer the axle and the spindle assemblies or did you need these parts as well? I have a 67 that I'm doing the same transfer off of a 72 long bed donor truck so any insight is greatly appreciated! I ordered CPP drop spindles designed for the 63-70 truck but they use 71-72 disc brakes but I can still change the order if I need to use the front crossmember.

Re: Project Slo-Go 67

Mahanian,

We just removed the rear springs and trailing arms when we removed the rear end, because i was going to scrap the lwb frame, so we removed all parts and left a bare frame . you can order replacement axles to make the '67 a 5-lug, but since we had the '72 rear end we installed it as well. we did the entire front swap, because the 72 was complete, and with the engine out of the '67 we were able to remove 14 bolts on both of them and roll the front xmember out from under it. We then tore down the '72 front suspension for paint, and rebuilt the suspension. I ordered '72 2 1/2 drop spindles from ECE, along with 4' drop springs for the back.

Good luck with your build. if you have any questions, let me know and i will do my best to help you out.

Thanks for the comments.

Heath

Thanks Allen, my 16 yo Son is stoked, our HS does not have autobody but he can take it if he wanted to go to a neighboring city's HS, We both thought it would be more Fun doing a Father son build.

Keep up the good work on your Truck..

Re: Project Slo-Go 67

Great job on the build. Gives me a little hope and inspiration as I continue to work on mine. I haven't had any experience with rust repair either but am doing like you did and learn as I go. I think my problem is I need a better welder. I have a Clarke Mig with an argon tank but it pulsates instead of feeding the wire smoothly so the welds look like hell. Could be because I am using too small of a gauge extension cord too. Who knows. Just another reason to spend money on a new welder ;)

my67chevytruck 06-02-2009 10:24 AM

Re: Project Slo-Go 67

Thanks for the comments! you might want to check the tensioner that holds the wire spool on (could be too tight), and the tension roller that feeds the wire through the gun.

Geoff, ok , ok , nothing really picture worthy but here ya go  , we have put a couple of coats of por-15 high heat factory grey on the ramhorns, and a lil touch up welding on the cab....

Re: Project Slo-Go 67

Did you put that por-15 directly over the rusty manifold?

NO, they were wirewheeled, then i let them sit in vinegar for a couple of days (thanks for the tip CDOWNS) , cleaned em with wax and grease remover, then painted with the por-15 manifold grey high heat ..

the manifolds only have 2 light coats, I will probably put atleast one more heavier coats, maybe 2.

The vinegar cleans them up real good, you can get 2 gallons at sams for around 3 bucks. I bought 4 gallons and soaked em... they came out pretty....

Mike,

I may give that a try on the headers of my '56, they have been jet coated (ordered that way from summit) but seem to be fading already.. let me know how yours turn out.

Thanks, they still need another coat or two. I used a foam brush, it is a self leveling high temp paint from por -15 see the link below.

http://www.por15.com/FACTORY-MANIFOL...ductinfo/FMGG/

I wirebrushed the manifolds, let them sit in vinegar a couple of days, dried em off. and hung them up to dry internally a couple of days. cleaned them with wax and grease remover, the painted with the por-15 high temp paint. Ledzepp used the high temp paint and has had good results, so here we are.....

Re: Project Slo-Go 67

Thanks for the comments guys.. the rims are 17 x8 with 265/60/17 and 17x9 with 285/60/17 the springs are 2" drop fronts and 3" drop backs, and a rear sway bar from CPP. I will put the rear sway bar on my son's truck and the springs will be saved for the next project out back.

My son wanted to mount em on the rolling frame to see how they looked, but i am trying to get the parts to the body shop, and dont want em all dusty, maybe we will roll out the frame and take some pics with em mounted for the picture SMORES

Well my son was bored today after football practice, so we mocked up the rear sway bar at lunch, then finished up after work. He wanted to see what the hopsters looked like on the rolling frame so we mounted 2 temporarily so he could see the difference. Here are some pics.... :metal: :smoke:
