Re: Project "Popeye"
I've had the cab on the frame for mock-up for a couple weeks but thats bout it. I've been real busy and the heat is not a huge motivator so it's going slow right now but I did get my wheels painted tonight, whad'ya think? This is the same color that's going on the dash, 1966 marina blue metallic. I was thinking about using it on the firewall too but now I'm considering going with a gloss black there.

Re: Project "Popeye"
Wheels look good.glad to hear the drugs are helping.try to get some very small lug nuts to fit in the spyder caps.what tire size are you getting know.
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
They're sending me 235/70/15's instead. I saw some on 15x7's and they looked pretty good. I'm on the fence about the spider caps actually after reading about all the problems mounting them. Something about putting a cheap ring under the lugs on a lug-centric hub just doesn't sit well with me. I'm considering using sending them back and using bullet lug nuts with cones. What do you think, how did yours mount?
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
I used accorn lug nuts.i had to use a rubber mallet to help them on.my syder caps were $185 from excalibur. I bought bullet lug nuts and center caps for $40 at a local hot rod show.

Re: Project "Popeye"
I sent the spider caps back and just used bullet lug nuts and bullet caps (shannon cones) they were only like $25 shipped and look great. I'm just waiting for my 2nd set of Diamondbacks to get here then I'll mount and get some pics, I think they're going to look great. The new tires are going to be 235/70/15, I was wrong in my last post.

Re: Project "Popeye"

Re: Project "Popeye"
HAHA I know the feeling, I was gathering receipts last night for a budget check. What size tires were on those Cragars?
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
got a line on a 6.0 out of a 2000 suburban with 60K miles for $500.not sure if thats the way i want to go.i think the wiring harness will be spendy.what are you planning on using if you use your motor.
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
255/65/15 bfg radial ta

Re: Project "Popeye"
I'd go with the 6.0, it's getting much easier and cheaper to have a harness made and ecm tuned. You supply the harness and they make it stand alone with usually a 4 wire hook-up. You get a small fuse block with relays and it's pretty much plug-and-play. Wait4meperformance does it for about $360 last I checked. There's a bunch of tutorials about doing it yourself too. Plus consider they are virtually maintenance-free. No setting valve lash, oil leaks, distributors to wear out, etc.
I converted to carb just for looks and simplicity on mine. I have a Edelbrock LS1 Victor Jr Carb intake, MSD 6010 controller and Barry Grant Demon 650. I love the idea of setting timing with my computer. I am going to use the 5.3, I must have been off my meds the other night when I considered swapping for the 350 in my '71. Word of caution you will have to change out the oil pan, right now mine is by far the lowest point in the front. I picked up an F-body pan cheap but typically the whole set up runs about $250. |
Re: Project "Popeye"
Got on a kick last night and picked up a bunch of gauges (still bidding on the tach but the rest are mine):

Re: Project "Popeye"
Nice find.i just won the auction on a fulton visor.original 807 series.
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
Very nice, hate to know what that cost ya :uhmk: I got a visor last week, it's not a Fulton but it works fine and it was $60. It's adjustable, I'll get some pics.
|
Re: Project "Popeye"
Here's the visor. "New" new tires came in today, can't wait to get them mounted and get some pics for ya'll. I think this will be a truck work weekend...hopefully. I got over the back thing and now I might have a gallbladder issue. Man, 30 is not being kind to me.

looking good bro!

Re: Project "Popeye"
I am liking it alot, what tranny you using? Rear end?
did you have to move the cab back or forward with your set up? Seems like you didn't have to since the running boards seemed aligned. I went the s-10 frame route, but have an OG frame I am wanted to go the same route you went. |
Re: Project "Popeye"

Re: Project "Popeye"
Yeah, I finally got my '71 out of the garage. Put about 80 miles on her yesterday with no problems. I still had pine needles in the bed from November when we got a Christmas tree (last time we drove it). Definitely a good day!
