Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
my 2004 z71 gets 14.7mpg ....no matter how I drive. Believe it or not the 96 z71 in my avatar gets 16mpg and its rolling on 38x15.5x15 super swamper TSLs. s10s dont even get great mpg. around 20 if your lucky.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
My 05 Crewcab Z71 with the 5.3 gets (going from the average readout on the dash) a whooping 11.2 MPG. Granted, I live 2 miles from my shop and that is about all it gets driven, hardly any highway use.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
I second the cheaper beater. My Mustang isn't a beater, but it's not a new car, either. With the 5.0, 5 speed, and 2.73 gears, I average a little over 20 MPG per tank, and I still like to drive it. I was planning on swapping gears when I first got it, but I have really grown to like it (especially with $3.80 per gallon gas).

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
I wont be getting a z71 or 4x4 though so i cant really go off those numbers.. And if i do get a new truck itll be better than the 9 or 10 mpg i figure i get now...

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Get a 4 banger baby square( S-10) 82-93..
|
Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
My dad gets 18mpg out of a 2006 chevy crew 2wd, depends on how you drive and you can tell how he drives because mine would be 14 out of the same truck
|
Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Ive got an 02 Silverado shortwide with 2" drop shackles that gets around 21 mpg. Its an auto 2wd roll up windows and manual locks. But it only has 64k miles. May actually sell it soon too. Oh yeah has the 4.3 v6.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Ive decided to keep it. I dont know what i was thinking, although 9 and a half mpg's can make you think, and a drive it quite a bit.. But I cant let this truck go! Anyways changed the oil, fuel filter, oil filter, and air filter today, which was much needed

Glad you are keeping it. It will never be an economy vehicle, but I hope you can improve your mileage.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Glad to hear it man. I know how depressing the gas situation is right now. However, you would have really kicked yourself down the road for selling it. Trust me I know more times than I would care to share.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
I might have missed it in here, but have you thought about an engine swap, Lq4 / 4L60e maybe get you around 20-22mpg?
If you look hard enough you can find the whole package for $2-3K and after spending that you still save money after years of paying at the pump with 9-10mpg. |

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Well guys its about time for an update, theirs good news and bad news..
Bad news first.. A few weeks ago i rearended someone, luckily i was only going about 5 if that, their trailor hitch went through my grill, and best my lower grill panel and grill support. http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...9/DSCN2631.jpg http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w...9/DSCN2630.jpg |
Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Now on to the good news! One of my bestfriends has a 84 k10. He had a stock grill he gave me, and i found a lower grill panel with trim on it and grill support at a salvage yard. So it "only" cost me $25. I got out lucky.. Also i added a little twist to the "new" grill that i think turned out awesome.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Wow man, that's an awesome truck. I too started my 75 C10 with my dad when I was 16. It was close to being completed and I ended up getting t-boned on my way to school back in May. It sucks, but I'm slowly buying new parts to get her looking pretty again!

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Sorry to hear about the motivation to swap grills, but it turned out good. If you want I have a set of 85-87 headlight buckets. I always liked them better than the 83-84 ones. Just my .02 though.

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Man,
Sorry to hear about the crunch of the old grill but the new one looks great. |
Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Back to the gas mileage issue guys.. With working not too close to home and college next year, my 84 with 9.4 mpg just isnt the daily driver i need.. I hate to do this but i cant have two vehicles at this point.. Its hard enough on me and i know ill regret it and miss it more than anything, so please don't remind me.. But of course im staying CHEVY!
The new daily driver is a yellow (yes yellow) 2001 Chevrolet Silverado Single Cab Short bed with a 5.3 v8, which i have much plans for in the future. Will post pictures tomorrow in the 99-06 section. |
Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
My mom has the same setup but not yellow  and its an '03 but it gets almost 15mpg with her driving from tuttle every day, not bad but not that great imo, Good luck with it dude :metal:

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
Good luck man. Don't let people give you too hard of a time. It's easy to sit in our position, and tell you not to sell it. I've had plenty of things that I wish I could have done differently. However, life doesn't always go exactly how we want it. Do what you need to do, and enjoy the new ride. Look at it this way. You're going to give the new owner a great truck that they can enjoy, and you get a new canvas to work with on the yellow truck.
By the way! Where are the pics of the new truck? |
Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
That's a hard truck to find (single cab 5.3). They just didn't put very many 5.3 engines in the single cabs. If they did, I can't find them. I have looked around here some time and most either have 4.3 six or 4.8 v-8. Anyway, you need to do what you need to do. Pictures????

Re: My first project truck - 84 Chevy swb
And so im not too far off topic, the last update from me for the 84 most likely.. We added an edelbrock performer eps intake. Looks much better than before and runs better.
