Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Well, got the axle flip completed, new perches welded on, old ones off, new U bolts, knocked off half the spring pack and left 7 leaves per pack, single wheels on, inner frame plates on and bolted (what a pain), rear frame is painted with chassis paint (3 coats)........then moved on to the front to do the SRW swap, got the rotors off then realized that my donor rotors were pretty much toast. CRAP! So went to order some....my cost at NAPA was $147/rotor, Piston Ring was $130/rotor, and GM was....get this....$900/rotor!!!!!! I kid you not! I had to ask 3 times if that was right...and the parts guy swears that this was the price. I think I pee'd a little when I heard that...I burst out laughing in his ear.
But...on a lighter note, got the AIMCO part number from Piston Ring and looked them up on Rock Auto. Ended up getting a set that they were blowing out (last 2 in stock) for $34.92 each. WHOO HOO! So ordered up 2 of those, some new HD brake pads and with shipping only came to $127.33 TOTAL!!!! Made me very happy....haahaha. Tonight ordered up the new carpet (again!) due to deciding on the tan/saddle colored interior. I initially ordered up the grey carpet, and one of the trucks I picked up had brand new black carpet. I'll use the grey carpet on the 4x4 crew/short I plan to build later on and just sell the black stuff I guess. Also ordered up some new door strikers as I noticed mine were pretty worn. Plumbed new rear hard lines for the brakes as the old ones were pretty brittle and rusted. Just bought the ones with the factory rock guards and bent as needed. Worked out well. Should have my rebuilt hinges back this coming week, and got a text from my buddy tonight as well that my driveshaft is ready to rock. Shortened it 15" as the tolerances were pretty close when stock and felt the additional inch would be a good direction to go to rectify it. Cost....$52.00!! Was glad to hear that one as well. Now just have to get some new joints and we're golden. Back end is all back together after that and fully functional again. One less thing on my to do list. ...pictures to ensue this weekend. Plan to tear into the front end again this weekend and get some things painted up, and shorten the front coils another 1/2 coil to drop another inch or so. Hoping that will be enough...I think I took off a 1/2 coil before..going to have to go back on my own thread to be sure...ahhahaha. |

Single rollers back on till the 10" wides arrive http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4255_large.jpg Frame plates in place and bolted together with grade 8 NF bolts and stove locks http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4254_large.jpg http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4253_large.jpg New brake lines plumbed as the old ones pretty much shattered when I bumped them. Figured might as well replace it all. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4261_large.jpg Starting to swap the front end, but realized my donor rotors were pretty much fubar'd, so ordered some new rotors/hubs and pads yesterday. http://carphotos.cardomain.com/ride_...4257_large.jpg Driveshaft shortened 15"s ....also ordered up new door strike pins, and tan carpet today from LMC. Decided to do the tan interior in the end. Wanted to do the lipstick red, but the wife wasn't feeling it and it was just a deciding factor. I think the tan should work with what we have planned. Will work the colors into the signage and pin stipping when all is said and done. Spent the evening sand blasting buckets of bolts so that I can get them all painted and they will be good and dry when put to use. Meticulous but makes a big difference during assembly and the final look. |

http://carphotos4.cardomain.com/imag...5543_large.jpg http://carphotos2.cardomain.com/imag...5539_large.jpg Bell Tech 2" drop spindles, 1.5 coils removed from factory 1 ton springs, new rotors, new calipers, new brake pads, new brake hoses, new bearings, and grease seals. Along with some chassis paint after retrieved from the blasting cabinet. New shock studs as someone had just bolts through it. Sitting 11" from the ground to pinch weld (front) and 13.25" from the ground to pinch weld at back of cab (rear). So should sit with around 1" of rake or closer to level when all is said and done. Very happy with the results thus far. |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Managed to make some progress this weekend...fenders on, box in place, rear driveshaft installed, and pushed it outside to get some better pictures.
...don't mind the farm fresh rims/tires, though they really kill the looks of the truck don't they...wow! hahahaha.... http://carphotos3.cardomain.com/imag...5035_large.jpg http://carphotos3.cardomain.com/imag...5039_large.jpg http://carphotos3.cardomain.com/imag...5037_large.jpg |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Some progress...........dash is painted, mixed up my own paint color to match the factory replacement carpet.

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
I liked how the dash turned out as well...............that is till I had a look at it in some better lighting. Nothing big deal, but found some dirt in a few spots and a couple pin holes I somehow missed as I never did highbuild a second time after numerous repairs...but what can a guy expect without a booth I guess....and being that I am far from a proffessional painter.
I'll scuff it down quick in a few days after letting things cure for a bit, and then just reshoot it. Was hoping to have the cab and front clip in paint by this Sunday, but with this it will be more realistic to say mid week/weekend of NEXT week. No sense of rushing it now....it would drive me crazy..even though others probably wouldn't even see it....hahahaha |

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Well to my dismay, after looking at the dash a bit closer there was some small dust particles that just were....well, irritating the hell out of me. So the dash got sanded down, and problem areas repaired, then sprayed AGAIN. Only problem was that my HVLP gun decided to have a temper tantrum, and screw up the second shot at a good looking dash......GRRRRRR! Had runs everywhere. So, you guessed it...........sanded down once again to prep for the final shot at doing a good job of the dash. This thing was NOT going to beat me a 3rd time round. As you can see below the dash turned out near percfect, and this time I added a bit more flattening agent.....which I like alot better. So that being said, the dash is complete to this stage and I can actually start putting some things together for a change. Will be a nice change of pace for a bit. Then the outer shell is going to get some PPG Delfleet as well.

Nothing some epoxy resin, some filler, primer and paint won't take care of. http://carphotos4.cardomain.com/imag...9979_large.jpg http://carphotos2.cardomain.com/imag...9980_large.jpg |

awesome update...

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Some progress in the last week or so....
Got my hinges back from the body shop tonight...all new pins, bushings etc, and blasted ready for primer and paint. Buddy of mine shortened up my ebrake cable and it is also ready to rock. And finally, started installing the second skin sound deadener on the firewall and can start installing the new firewall sound suppression pad I picked up from LMC. |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Great work on you column. That color looks sweet by the way!

http://carphotos4.cardomain.com/imag...3311_large.jpg New pins and bushings in all 8 hinges. http://carphotos2.cardomain.com/imag...3306_large.jpg New firewall matting/sound pad http://carphotos2.cardomain.com/imag...3326_large.jpg http://carphotos2.cardomain.com/imag...3327_large.jpg http://carphotos4.cardomain.com/imag...3314_large.jpg http://carphotos3.cardomain.com/imag...3309_large.jpg SECOND SKIN sound deadener/matting Second skin sound deadener start of install. Started off by scuffing down the floor to get rid of any debris, overspray, etc. Then proceeded to blow out the interior of all dust and contaminants. Sizing each sheet, marking it out with chalk where relief cuts were needed, then peeling the back off to install product in place. At this point put some heat to it to make it somewhat more maluable, then press down with a roller wheel tool, and a gloved hand. Believe me, you want a good glove on before attempting to press into place after heat. With proper placement, the product goes together seamlessly at times, but patience and persistance pays off with this stuff. The matting is good and heavy gauge, so some relief cuts and so forth will be needed. At this point you can already hear the difference in the tone of the metal.......I have high hopes for this stuff. Will post up more pictures as progress ensues. |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
That looks a lot like the stuff i used in my crew. I still can't belive how quite it is. My 87 doesnt have any thing other than factory and it sounds like a rattle trap compare to the crew, hell i cant even here the radio in the 87.
When i am finished with the crew i know the first thing that will be done to the 87! |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
looks good man...I love the dash, and love the colour....

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Where are you guys getting this matting at? It looks good, great work!

Any plans on luxury liner too? Also, truck is looking good. Really like the second attempt with the dash painting. Looks really good with the flattener in it. |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
I looked into the luxury liner etc. and would like to do it at some point I think. I was just trying to minimize the build cost a bit for now. I have enough material here to do the complete interior top to bottom plus a bit more I think. The back of the cab and possibly a few other areas may get a second layer...but not sure if I should just keep the extra for the 4x4 project, and just buy some lux later. Every square inch of the inside will be done.....and I have monofoam inside the roof as well for some added strength that should help with some sound suppression issues as well I would think/hope.
As for the dash, yeah...I am happy with it now. Ordered a new back window today so hope to have the custom painting/stripping/gold leaf done on the dash and glass in within a few weeks if all goes to plan...which we all know THAT won't happen. ...oh, and thanks for the compliments. Appreciate the interest in the build, especially since I follow a few of your builds as well and am as equally impressed with the work done. I can only accredit some of the work to the knowledge brought on by the site itself....or should I say the BLAME?....hahaha |
Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Jumping in to check out this build. It is sweet, nice job

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
99 percent of the sound dampner in place, just waiting to figure out if it's going to get the NV 4500 swap or not. Waiting to hear on a couple parts trucks.

Re: Project: Crew'd Attitude
Should be good to go for paint tomorrow after a good cleaning and wipe down. First some epoxy primer, then Sikkens OTO rockerguard, then the flat black paint, along with some red oxide in spots, and then finally the flat white. Then the firewall and door jams will get a last coat of shiny white.

Looking good always nice seeing more parts going on than coming off. I was up in your area back in the mid 70's hauling Allis Chalmers tractors I took them up to Dauphin and Swan River, beautiful country up there

Looks good. I have been thinking about a fux-tina paint job on my stepside. It is in need of paint due to the po's lack of prep work.
