Well.........next set of pics show the steering column back in.The tilt column is out of a 73 Chev van,used an upgrade kit for the flasher,signal and tilt arm.Still waiting for the shorty shift arm,which was a cool find and will work well with a smaller wheel.
Also in is .....the new steering wheel.....only a year to make a choice on that...............,(I think its time to go see a shrink :ben:) gauge cluster and pedals. At the same time the dash was being modified,I opted to smooth all of the spotwelds around the top perimeter of the firewall.I have seen a few trucks with this step skipped and thought it looked unfinished,so Im glad the time was taken to do it ! I made beauty rings for the top of the defrost vents,a nice little addition that matches the rest of the Vintage air vents/louvers. Sun visors were pulled from a later model Chev C10. I wanted to have the pivot hook so the visor didn't vibrate when going down the road.This truck only came with a drivers side visor from the factory,to have both sides now is a bonus ! The visor arms were modified so they sit higher than the factory location.I have made mounts for my seats that raise them up 2",so the visors had to be raised out of my site line. I still need to get the seat I plan to use, I'm not there yet but would love to see how you put the later year sun visors in with the catch tabs, which is a great idea to keep them from flopping around like the originals did after they got some use.

The inner post or hinge is 2 piece,so you can leave the end in the visor that clips into the hook. Good idea to take some 400 grit to clean any rust on your old mounts, paint,then slide the later visors back on .You may have to trim the visor ends and re-upholster if you raise them up like I did. Check for the hook location by.... looking at visor in up and visor in down position as well and then how it best lines up with your body lines on the roof. Position the hooks where they best suite you,mark through the hole with a pencil and drill.Be aware there is a locating nib at the top of the hook,you will need to drill for that as well. Found a great product that is a butyl based insulation/sound deadner,most of this stuff is asphalt based which I didn't want,so away I went with the install.
Best to do this in a warm shop,for moister reasons and workability.Probably went overboard on areas above the floor,but that's something I wont have to question later on. Not a bad idea to have some extra heat in the cab at the time your doing this,it does help.This material is 60mil thick so when cold,its tough to work with ! I went to the top of the firewall and back up the rear cab wall.I dont know that Ill bother with the kick panels,maybe later . Make sure that if you choose to torture yourself by doing this job,meditate for at least one day!! Make sure your floor etc.is clean,that you get the air bubbles out and seal all joints with metal tape.Use a small roller,upholstery or heavy industrial type scissors,they work well. Sort of looks like the inside of the space shuttle ? I'm sending my resume to NASA. |

So in the past few days I got a real wake up call.Now believe me when I say this......,I did my homework to find the best replacement parts and this is what I went through .
Aftermarket inner fenders and rad support........, now because of liability concerns,I will not mention brand however I can assure you these are the quality line,I couldn't imagine worse ! I know better at my age not to expect new panels to fit properly without a little work,but this was pathetic. After reading a thread by another member who lives close by,we determined his and my parts are the same manufacturer.At that time I decided to send my junk back to the supplier. Fortunately I stopped in the middle of my assembly and did not try to make any mod's to my parts,(at least nothing obvious:lol:) although I was educating the folks in the surrounding area with new words (Im sure the neighbours can vouch for this)..not to mention lining up the panels with my foot at those special moments. Hope you all appreciate the pics on this as much as I did at the finish of the assembly. First 2 pics are passenger side fit at the corner and twist in the rad support that lifted it off the frame mounts.Now keep in mind these bolts are all finger tight !! 3rd pic is of the rad support from the side,look at that lean...just like I had a head on into a retaining wall.Keep in mind folks,these are new panels. The last pic is the drivers inner from underneath looking up.In order to get the passenger side inner bolted on I had the remove all the bolts here at the drivers side...., and this......, Is how the holes lined up there with all 3 pieces together. The moral of the story is....unless you want to spend days on new sheet metal repairs,Id look hard for repairable oem parts. I do believe sir that all the rad supports I have seen photographed lean inwards 1 to 3/4" at the top. There was quite a discussion on someone else more recent thread as well.
I have not mocked my all original body parts back up to check this, but that lean does seem to be intentional, or in the least a common design (flaw?)..... I did not realize that I had not read your entire thread before today. Awesome work you have done here. Is your build timeline the same as your posting? If so you are just jamming along!! Though I understand you have experience, help, tools, equipment, and probably time up on me :lol: Your dash is looking super nice too, I dig your mods! Thanks for the sq-ft info on the deadner, I would never have guessed you could use 50sqft inside a single truck cab like that..... Also glad you mentioned the boxing in of your frame rear for tank protection. I am going to give mine a second look now too when I get back to that end of the rig..... Keep it coming, I am digging this. |

Wow... Nice to see you saved this relic. Great metalwork..I don't think I would have had the patience to replace all the rust. Lots of great ideas here too. I hope you don't mind if I use a few when I get around to my builds. I'm particularly fond of the dash extension and the gas filler in the stake pocket.

Why hello there !Guess what folks,I got rid of the inner fender and rad support junk as I said I would.
I bolted the oem parts on .....,and everything lined up fist try !It was a little tough bolting on all the old crusty stuff,bit I quickly got over that ! I have taken pics that I felt explained themselves.Compare fitment to the junk I returned,no contest here ! Nice even spacing either side looking down the front of the truck,and notice the rad mount to inner fender fit when bolted finger tight ! Also for comparison is the up underneath pic drivers side. Some work to be done on the used stuff,but a fraction of what it had taken on the new. Thanks to all of you who participated in helping me with this stage of my build.A'lot of time and grief has been saved because of it. I toast to honor all of you !:barn: |

Urgh,finding that the new fenders aren't fitting so well once the nose/grill support was bolted on......,more aftermarket junk.
Guess I'm going with oem outer fenders,that took all of 1 second to decide. I borrowed the red primed inners in the pics,mine should be here tonight or tom,I found some sitting in a warehouse off a California truck. That will be some good news when they get here,rust free and no dents.I paid pretty close to the same as the junk new ones that I just sent back. I guess it would have been cool to have new sheet metal on the truck,but at what cost? I go out of my way to by North American products because I just cant stand the idea of our own out of a job,this junk was a good slap in the face reminder to stay on that path ! "SHAME ON ME " ! I really hate bolting any part on this truck that wasn't made in the US,I never owned a vehicle made overseas and never will,so why bolt the junk on and disgrace my Chevy with it!:puke: |

The way I look at it is; the repos may be beautiful, clean, and rust free, but I much rather have as much old steel as possible. It just sets better for me; Steel that was formed back in the 60's on a 60's truck. Mechanically I want the modern, but the body needs to be old steel - that's just me.

i just read your thread and you have done alot of cool mods! i wish i would have seen the gas filler mod you did before i made mine! i'll have to reach over in the bed to just the inside-side panel to fill mine! i thought of buying new outer fender but i'm glad i just bought the patches and fixed mine with the poor fitment some people have with them!! have you thought of an exterior color yet? anyways good luck with the rest of the build!!

Finally,the box is finished.With a new Mar-K tailgate,rear crossill,and front box panel,the box looks incredible !
Tyler finished up yesterday,but we decided to let the final spray filler dry overnight and harden properly. Stay tuned,more pics and details on the way! Cheers, Ed.:ito: |

Today is box day ! Cant wait to make a coffee and open the blinds and...........................? What ?...,If you all can believe it,snow was coming down,second day of spring my a$$ !,@#!**!,
Of course the day I go to pick it up the roads look now like a winter pass somewhere in the Alps. Anyway the sun came out,so all the crap melted and dried by the time Steve and I went to pick up the box.Was around noon,Its gonna be a great day,you gotta appreciate good luck like that ! We had the box tack welded onto the cart for safe transport,I was taking no chances !I couldn't imagine watching it come loose,bounce over the guard rails,then sinking to the bottom of Okanagan lake.I cringed just thinking about it ! |
