Re: N00b with a 72 c20
Looking good. Are you using POR-15 on all of the parts or just the core support and frame?
What are the two triangular brackets attached to the crossmember by the axle hump in the frame? I don't think my leaf spring frame has them. They seem a bit elaborate to just be for exhaust hangers... (edit- come to think of it, I don't even have that cross member, as I replaced it with a chunk of heavy angle iron due to the original being rotten...) |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
I assumed those brackets were exhaust hangers for dual exhaust? The trucks exhaust was not hanging there when I got it though. It was a 5th wheel towing truck for some time in its life so maybe its something to do with that. They have some pretty sturdy rubber piece on them with a slit.
I'm doing everything with POR15 semigloss. stuff that sees sun Im top coating with POR chassis coat. bumper, core support, steering column parts, wipers etc. Its probably a waste but the stuff I did on my front suspension is the first paint I've ever done at home that you cant scratch with a fingernail. Granted Ive pretty much only used rattle cans... but it seems like strong stuff to me and I hate rust. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
got the frame off the hoist and then slipped a disc in my back. been on the couch for 4 days. hurts!!!

Re: N00b with a 72 c20
new parts came today.
ebrake cables, brake lines, clips and lowering shackles to level the ass-end of the truck. now if I could just stand for more than 5 minutes I could get to the shop and work on it. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps2brdlqpv.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psn6ygfwf3.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
Its now a rolling chassis...
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pspr2t40em.jpg wait now its basically a truck right. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pst6mrvu47.jpg core support: mounted. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
Wish my core support was mounted. Good job!
|
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
put on my lowering shackles today. definately going to have to notch something on the bed. they stick up over the frame by a couple inches.

Re: N00b with a 72 c20
front suspension and rear diff are installed. Cross threaded the dang pitman arm stud so have to replace it...
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psxq4pjzuj.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psmxogyixr.jpg emergency brake cable is giving me some fits. I found a picture I took before taking it apart so I think I have it now. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psgg22h7ev.jpg I realize now I put the brackets on the crossmember on the top instead of the side where they should be. I was wondering where the tranny was going to sit. new stainless steel stuff http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psky1kuqb7.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psqlzh7uzp.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
putting in my new ebrake cables. I think its still to short.
i got new ebrake cables and the intermediate cable seems to short. This will be a series of pics starting at one drum and going around to where I run out of line. Is it short or am I missing something? http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psflkbpj1y.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pspgmj78ok.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psmactfa5u.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psstllwzxd.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psyf9sudne.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psmhrkfwoa.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
rear shocks installed
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psioo6qdva.jpg calipers installed. working on the new brake lines. custom factory fit my butt... http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pslleysepq.jpg looks similar but i think my rearend is from a 73 because the new ones fittings are to big. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psxxclvnah.jpg also because it looks like this rear center hose with the built in tee started in 73. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pstvdzqwjm.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
got the motor mount brackets put back in and the steel lines for brakes run and secured.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psva9i15rv.jpg if you put the headlight buckets in like this: http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psgrtr3wod.jpg you end up with this: Cockeyed lights http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psawp0mfks.jpg ahhh much better: Put in the hood latch, grill support, battery tray and the corner pieces that hold the fenders. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pscujjapei.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
put in my AC condenser after cleaning it up and painting it.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psfbrjzdlt.jpg grabbed the visors and thought id clean them up and see if they are salvageable. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psscpufjvg.jpg after cleaning http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psns1yfwvp.jpg one has about an inch of material separating from the seam. ill probably just put some glue on to keep it from running and call it good. decided to cut out a little piece of rot ive been go back and forth on doing. Need to go get some sheetmetal for patches. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pswjejwwa8.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
Looks good! Keep it up!

Re: N00b with a 72 c20
so I cut out a small piece around where I could tap my pointy hammer and bust through metal to rusty underside.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psqp5qotfw.jpg I cut a new piece and welded it in tack by tack and grinded it down. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psdisdl7os.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pskycn6exw.jpg As I ground I kept blowing off other tiny peices with rust underneath. I'd wirebrush and clean down to metal again and fill with weld. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps5c8d0566.jpg anyway I've finally decided I need to cut out a bigger patch. My problem is I need to cut out the lip and am worried about making it look semi decent when putting in a patch panel or new piece I cut. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps8m9if4mi.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
took the motor apart down to a shortblock.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps5mosycfb.jpg only a little carbon on the pistons and the cylinder walls are really smooth with no lip at the top. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psewe40jum.jpg pulled all the glass out of the doors and removed the door locks and handles. One more thing ready for sand blasting. I built a little stand to keep the glass out of the way. I like signs... http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psigms3gga.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
made a patch for some rust I cut out of the cowl.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psc823vzgl.jpg lot of holes to fill. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psauk5qmwo.jpg |

http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps8m9if4mi.jpg[/QUOTE] I've got the same concern with my right fender. Prolly end up test fitting it with the door installed before getting too far. I had to cut the lip and fold over the new patch, too, but I think my issue came from warpage from welding. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
heres my nightmare i detailed in another thread here: http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=631205
Cheap crap patch panels.. I cut out the rusty part back to good metal. First time cutting anything major. I started by cutting the fold to get a feel for how deep it was and what it takes to cut it. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pszmt2xlmp.jpg not bad so I moved on to cutting out the rust. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psagyfg2kq.jpg ok its not so bad. lot of sparks on my legs. i can handle it. hey look it came away from the support. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psqflbeb1m.jpg forgot to get pics of me cutting out the spot welds at the pinch on the bottom. but I just held the cutoff wheel on it and went back and forth until I could pry the piece away. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psuyzktqje.jpg Went to the truck shop and got a patch panel. Not sure Im impressed. the depth at the bottom seems bigger. There is no hole for the inner fender. There is no dip/body line whatever in the edge. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psfc3c482f.jpg Pretty sure I got the right part http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps2nmnfywq.jpg the guy at the store was pretty nice. I couldnt quite see how Im going to fold over the edge on the new one and he whipped out the ancient brown assembly manual and thumbed through (no index as you know) until he found it and said to just bang it down into place. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psqf3bugge.jpg so since Ill never get the wheel side of the patch to match the lines of the fender Im thinking about just cutting what I need from the patch. Something like this http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pse4473b95.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
Only cutting out what needs to be replaced from the patch is usually the best route, I think, especially for something like a fender corner like what you are doing.
The patches are always pretty disappointing. The bottom line on the label in the picture you posted says it all. I don't recall any on Mustard not having to be pounded into shape at some point in the installation process. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
;) Hey my wife is from Taiwan. Grew up in LA though.
And yea I still call it cheap Chinese s$%^t. she knows. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
New radiator came today. Looks really nice.
couple problems. it didnt come with a rad cap. not a dealbreaker but for the kind of money I paid... THe temp sending unit for the fans doesnt fit the bung in the radiator. I can probably pickup an adapter but again this isnt a mass produced part. It was built when I bought it and making the hole the right size would seem to make sense... SO by that time I was getting annoyed. I tried to put it in the radiator supports and it wouldnt fit. Rad is to wide. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psltqnbm58.jpg SO I get to cussing and yelling and thinking about how Im going to cut the bracket and weld in another inch or just send the damn thing back. My buddy came over and said dont those tabs do something? Well come to find out the tabs fit in the brackets just fine. :dohh::dohh: http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psmhfekkoi.jpg Tightened it down and its solid as a rock. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psdzsntyqr.jpg looks good too http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps90soecio.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psybcvakp4.jpg ok in The rad makers defense... The bung is not for the sending unit... Its for the petcock. Sending unit goes in the intake manifold. So other than the rad cap it's an awesome looking piece of Aluminum that is a direct fit. Im happy. |

Re: N00b with a 72 c20
wired what I could of the headlight relays and fan relay.
looks like a rats nest anyway... http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pspwhva2gp.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psfeiklttg.jpg put the headlight relays behind the battery while I was playing with fun wires... sneaked it behind the rad. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psobu0nboz.jpg Got my new motor mount inserts put in and the clamshells painted. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psaefvjy5v.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
patched a rust spot in the cowl. Need a few more touches and some more grinding but its getting there.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps9lnwgkz1.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psfegnpcoi.jpg welded the small holes on the door. Now on to the bigger ones. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psdxqoltde.jpg |

Re: N00b with a 72 c20
painted the engine and started trying to fit it into the motor mounts. from my research it doesnt look like the are the proper mounts or clam shells. The PO was using them but I know it was missing a bolt on one side... Wondering if thats because he couldnt get it in.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psjw6z5nle.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psxyspn13y.jpg have some kind of weird oil pan with 2 dipstick spots that was filled in with half a tube of RTV... So i left the pan off for now. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psrj5xkfz9.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psp0ajzg15.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
wrong mounts but its so close Im going to get a pry bar and a friend and jam that bolt through there.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps5vw53zh8.jpg other side has a bolt through it. (these are just some scrap bolts for testing) http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psginv8zvm.jpg if the pry bar doesnt get it Ill get some tubular perches. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
I had the same problem so I re-drilled the towers to work. I was quite frustrated the 72 mounts didnt lit like I have read they should
|
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
Well a little redneck strategery and I think I got it.
I put the perches on the mounts and then lowered it all in and bolted the perches back in. Im now thinking maybe if I had just loosened the perches I could have gotten it but this was easy enough. Now whether this is "correct" or not I don't know but as long as the tranny goes in I think im fine. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pspoh8ec2a.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psbsw5huoc.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps0qbibf0g.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
I tried that too, but the mounts were in bind
|
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
My speedo cable thing on my transmission was leaking a little when I got it back from the shop, way back when.. I took it over to the shop and he put in a new seal so I went ahead and painted it so its ready for install.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psgnpesvl5.jpg Took my gauge cluster apart to paint the needles and clean the plastic. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psklgjwvln.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
i used a heat gun for drywall to unglue the woodgrain from the bezel.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psqqk0hnun.jpg left a bunch of goo behind. Of course im pretty much out of goof-off and paint thinner wasnt working very well.. now to figure out how to polish the plastic insert. without scuffing it up or removing the paint. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pssp8x6ewn.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
ok going a different direction on the cluster. Decided to get white gauge labels and a new plastic piece with black lettering.
Took the lights/wipers labels off. Those things were on tight. Either they are molded into the bezel or thats the strongest glue ever. I had to use a dremel to shave them down and then filled my "misses" with glaze. Going to hit it with highbuild and then paint. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pslji7m552.jpg since Im going with white gauges I decided to paint my pointers silver. I think it looks pretty good. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps3lkukrmw.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pshybuvcrf.jpg Looks like its aluminum theme for the engine. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps6q60ytdr.jpg http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps50f8smfi.jpg ordered a lunati cam, oil pan, white tach to stick in the center hole of the console, timing gear, some more flat black paint and harmonic balancer today so ill have a brown box of goodies coming soon. |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
test fitting the white face tach in my cluster
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps0naonudh.jpg New cam, lifters, balancer, oil pan and timing chain. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pseexggxvm.jpg cam and lifters installed with lots of gearoil and assembly lube. Engine will sit for months before being fired so hopefully the assembly lube holds up. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psnxlwahmx.jpg dining room table for the wife http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps7cccufar.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
got the timing cover and balancer and water pump back on. need some shorter bolts for the pump pulley because im not using the fan anymore. Got the new oil pan put on then realized I left off the oil pump rod and bushing so had to take it back off.
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps0ogzttuj.jpg did some more work on my gauges. heres the white overlays. they are ok. nothing special. print isnt really all that crisp and the labels could have been cut to fit better. useable for a driver though. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psijpl4att.jpg heres the clear plastic with black lettering. This is worse because its a huge clear decal you have to put on yourself and i dont think even a master could get all the air bubbles out. This thing is barely driver quality. It should come from them already with the stickers on it. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psvbbbewc9.jpg little primer on the bezel http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psul7kg03w.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
engine and transmission installed!!
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...psqopycftm.jpg going to work on plumbing the trans cooler lines. also dont think this looks correct. the hose is touching the frame and feels just short of kinking. http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...pszclh8nec.jpg |
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
can't you just take an inch of the radiator side?
|
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
I am going to try that but from what ive read on the forums it will still touch the frame. Most people just wrap it with another piece of rad hose to keep it from rubbing.
|
Re: N00b with a 72 c20
well the all silver got rousing laughs from everybody so I added some black to a few parts ;)
http://i750.photobucket.com/albums/x...ps5emfjwko.jpg been to hot to do much lately. |
