Got the rear out of the lwb frame.....FINALLY! Too much work and wasted time with hand tools....hope to look at a big shop compressor this week...but will need 220 run to the garage...
Got the parts on the shop truck sprayed with pb blaster so they can soak for a bit. Probably will spray one more time before attacking it...waiting on the u-bolt nuts to loosen up a bit on the old rear so I can get those out. Then will clean up and paint that rear so it is ready to install....will put the lowering blocks and longer u-bolts on to I can slide the rear in place and bolt the bags in....will take the bed off to make it a lot easier (bed is loose anyways). And I will paint the rear frame while I'm at it... Also cleaned up the glovebox door a bit... it was dirty as well as a little too rusty. Soaked it in lime away and then rinsed it off....after drying it off I sprayed it with wd40 to hopefully keep any more rust at bay....wiped it off the textured face and I'm very happy with the end result....just enough patina :) Posted via Mobile Device |

Got the engine going in the truck de-greased, pressure washed, and wiped down....one more prepall wipe and it'll be ready for primer and paint. First things first...got the felpro oil pan gasket installed....cork gasket had a tear in it and was leaking with the engine turned upside down so I'm sure it was really losing oil while driving.....explains how oily my trans was ;)
With the new oil pan seal installed I flipped it back over and started the intake install...had it loosely bolted and realized I had no swivel to get the center bolts torqued down....going to hf to get some other stuff (cheap gloves, etc) so I will look at a 1/2" swivel as well as 3/8" torque wrench... Transmission is rid of its' oily mess and ready for paint....could have painted tonight but temps were marginal and why not paint it all together as I wait between coats for one item to the next... Used my dirty, greasy, oily rag to wipe down my too shiny white back bumper  then wiped it off and it looks like the bumper was painted years ago ;) Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

One issue I'm having...the engine had a chrome thermostat housing I want to replace with factory stlye....
:but: The housing hits the temp sender....I know it can also go in the heads but the plug has a hex head on the driver's side and the passenger one wouldn't budge.... Also pictured is the oil pan gasket...made for either side dipstick pans like this one....not pictured is how there was a small almost "freeze plug" in the dipstick tube in the block....po didn't want oil coming out of the tube but was ok with the cork gasket in the oil pan leaking like a sieve ;) got the plug out and dipstick test fit fine. Looks good Jonathan. Keep the pics comin!

Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
:hiya:
Hmm either there is an optical illusion or there is a gap between the oil pan and bottom of the engine block on the opposite side directly across from the dipstick where oil can leak out. Anyone else see that too? |
Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
Great score for a shop truck. Can't wait to see it on the road. Keep it up.

On to the truck :D
Tonight turned into a mini meet when Nick - aka bmerdoc came over to help me. Then after an hour or so GMC Jester -aka Travis stopped in from Newport news to get a rear bumper setup and brake booster setup. Had a great time talking with both of them and LOVED working on the truck ;) it's always more fun with help and especially a fellow truck enthusiast to talk with. Thanks again Nick! One of the reasons I Love working on the truck? The bolts all have come off like butter so far....I've been soaking them in pb blaster in advance but even a few I forgot to hit came out with a small 3/8" ratchet and minimal effort! Makes it much more enjoyable when you don't have to fight every nut! We got the bed off and set on my spare frame and got the front clip off. I soaked down the rear suspension nuts for removal and hit the front frame/firewall with a can of oven cleaner to be followed soon by power washing and paint... Long day so off to bed. Trucks that are not weather sensitive and built to be used 24/7 365 are the real deal.

Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
Such a cool truck. I love the post about your 5 and 7 yr old kids wanting to help. I also have a 5 and 7 yr old, and they love to help to, primarily tell me what colors I should paint my trruck, but they love to help too.

Jonathan! I was able to quickly find this thread after accidentally unsubscribing from it earlier. Been outside all day busting loose bolts and taking a bath in the pressure washer? Heres the pics I managed to take. I had planned on taking more but you know how that goes.

Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
By taking off that bed and clip we gave Jonathan so many projects it may be days before we hear from him! If I know him he is the epitome of a night owl and he'll post pics somewhere between 1:30am and 2:00am! I know hes out in his driveway right now doing something to that old truck. Bless his wife for being such a great supporter in what his passions are!! I reminded him, just before I left, that he has 3 weeks to get that truck running and driving before the FIRST ANNUAL EAST COAST C10 THROWDOWN! Don't snowball it Jonathan! Put it together and ride! Everyone raise your glasses! Jonathan is building a driver!

Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
Thanks for the action shots  I hate to see my fat self on camera but at least there is proof I work on my trucks :haha:
They say the camera adds 100 lbs.....right? Yep, been working on my truck since 3pm. Quick food break and have to go help my sister in law with her forever breaking down 87 accord....but will be back at it later... had a measurement to do this morning after watching my oldest until my wife got back from the wonderful 1yr old and 5yr old shots appts ;) lots of dr office visits this week.... Got a lot more torn off and front and rear frame pressure washed and interior gutted as far as I'm taking it....pics later Posted via Mobile Device |

Where is this FIRST ANNUAL EAST COAST C10 THROWDOWN??

Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
Uhhggg! Hate baby shots! Always hated them. Maybe even worse than they did. I never liked to see that bottom lip pokin out. It always hurt me to the core. Ice cream always made us all feel better!
As far as the big boy shot go...Imagine how my 155lb, 5'8" frame felt this morning after lugging huge chunks of an old truck around the yard! If I had a twin I don't know if we woulda been able to get that stuff in the back yard. For you guys that don't know Jonathan is a very large man that wouldn't hurt a fly....Just don't get between him and his family! Just got your text about the windshield. Get some foamy glass cleaner and I'll bring the cord! See you on Saturday! |
Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck

I cleaned the rockers better after....had lots of dirt and rust scale from the bottom of the sill plates but no weak spots or holes! :metal:
Last pics for tonight.... Some cool pieces and tools included with the misc parts box the po gave me... Got the woodgrain sticker off the ashtray by soaking in goof off....now have naval jelly inside the tray to clean it up overnight... A glimpse of the stripped cab...need to finish taking the wiring harness off and that's it... And the 8k dash picture for littletony. Posted via Mobile Device Posted via Mobile Device |

Also sprayed the frame one more time with degreaser this time and powerwashed including the underside of the cab this time. Primer done on the frame. Also rust converted and primered in the wire gutter and some areas around the hinges. Will paint all those areas satin black. Watching the girls as my wife is at the store...needed a quick bite to eat and break for an update anyways ;) Planning to go back out and get the frame painted and get the old wiring harness pulled out. Have a good used one to put in its' place...the one that came out of my 70...it had full gauges and everything worked electrically. Still fighting the upper bolts in the rear sprij Posted via Mobile Device |

Above you also see the tools I used to cut out the siezed frame mount bolt for the panhard rod. Got that out and the upper shock mounts. Rear is ready to remove once I get the upper spring bolts out or cut...
Here's the windshield frame before install....need to get better pics of the windshield in the daylight tomorrow. Will try to post one later. And the grinding tools I used....$45 total investment and each has a specific purpose...easy to switch the cord...or use a splitter and have all hooked up... Saves time and saves the tools as you switch from one to the other instead of continuous use... Posted via Mobile Device |
Re: Project#2 67-72 Restoration's Shop truck
I love the array of grinders you have there. At $10 per, why not? I never owned one until a few months ago and now I use it all the time. Don't know how I lived without it.

Got the harness all disconnected....just have to undo the two bolts but waiting till I have the other to install since there's a good probability of rain....hoping my paint cures in time ;) I took a couple pictures of the frame painted but please remember.... First of all, I ran out of paint (knew I was going to) so I need 7:sumo: more cans tomorrow....still around $72 total in primer, paint and prep suplies (yes, I'm jealous of you guys who get frames blasted and powdercoated for $300....around here just blasting the frame is minimum 650...and powdercoating? If you have to ask you can't afford it  the complete rear and trailing arms are being swapped.... I'm installing new shocks all around... I will be replacing any front end components needed once I give it a shake down run...everything passes the driveway test  all dust sleeves look good and they were greased well... Shortly the lca's will be replaced with cupped ones and bags installed... This is a driver....didn't even have to paint the frame but I can't leave it alone ;) I am going to jack the cab up to install new mounts and remove the 3spd crossmember and will paint the frame under the cab then. Cab also is going to have an extra layer of undercoating sprayed over the factory stuff to clean it up....you have to see this cab underside to believe it if you live in va, the east coast in general, or the rust belt...it is the very best floor I've seen from a VA born and raised truck ;)....quite amazing actually. Now the pics...including a dark picture of the windshield....just because I said I would... Posted via Mobile Device |
