Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Congrats on buying Stella Mae. A great looking truck, like everything else he lays his hands on, from what I've seen.

The description on ebay: "8) Plenty of front to rear adjustment for different belting combinations." Seems like you'd be alright.
On another note, I have a Saginaw pump like the one in the ebay photo from my previous truck, but I want to use the pump I've seen on some other trucks with a narrower reservoir up top which I always see listed as a Chevy pump. Looks neater. I asked and the seller said those are also Saginaw.

Thanks for the compliment. I do have more. PM me.

There is no way to shim it forward 3/8" so I am simply going to need a new bracket. I'd hate to drop the $ on one and have the same issue with the one currently on the truck.(sorry for the hijack, I'll start a thread with pics in the right forum)

Truck looks great! You don't have any extra "Step" stickers around by any chance do you? That is awesome.

Malamute,... can you post pics of the alternator misalignment in a different thread?
I'd like to see what is going on.

Yes, I'll see if my wife can get a pic shortly. My wife is a photographer and they were tough to get a good pic that shows the alignment issues due to PS pulley and upper rad hose. I'll get one over in the right forum later, gotta go take down Christmas lights.

Was Keith using the stock PS brackets?

Malamute 01-26-2013 05:47 PM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

He didn't know Jim. He said he bought it in the for sale section on this board some time ago. He ran it 90 minutes with no issues before it was shipped but something is out of whack now. If there was an adjustment in the front/rear direction I could solve it easily I believe.

I have a thread and pic over in the 67-72 section as well so we don't clutter your thread Jim.

Are you looking for a stock throttle cable for a 6-cylinder?
I have this set-up that I bought on the board.
I sold the truck it was to go on.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=463659

I would think you would need the 71-72 gas pedal assembly also.

Jimbabwe 01-28-2013 03:01 PM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Yep. I think that's what I need instead of the handmade job on my firewall. I have the pedal assembly, with the LFD bracket in there now.
This is what I just posted--besides the WTB ad:

Are any of you running a straight six with a throttle cable (not a rod) in your 71/72?
I've got a '69. We swapped the rod for a 2wd V8 cable with a handmade bracket mounted on the firewall, and the 71/71 pedal with the LFD bracket. The loop it has is minor, but the cable, even lubed, is VERY hard to push/pull--due to the loop, I'm sure. I was going to switch back to the rod, but I got a universal Lokar cable which I can cut much shorter than the stock one to remove the unnecessary tight loop. It will be very short since the bracket we made is on the firewall.
I'd like to know, or see, what the throttle bracket setup is which the 71/72 trucks used. Where it mounted--on the carb? Motor? Maybe I could get my hands on the factory bracket, or similar and get rid of the cobbled together pos that my buddy made.
Thanks

The part circled in red, is the key to making what I have work.
The manifold has to have these two bosses cast into it,... to accept the bolt on bracket.

Jimbabwe 01-28-2013 03:11 PM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

I'll have to check mine out. I don't remember them being there, which is why we made something else...couldn't figure out where to attach anything on the carb or motor. Mine's a '69, I wonder if they only made them that way when they switched to the cable in 71. I'll look and let you know. Thank you.

This part of the manifold (yellow "X") is also critical for mounting the linkage.

Keith,
It looks like I'm good on mounting the stock brackets.

Oops! Forgot the pics! You can see the bracket that was made in an attempt to make due, and the crazy loop that makes for an extremely non-smooth throttle.

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

I have $50 in my bracket and cable.
I can ship in a flat rate box for $61 if you are interested.

Looks sweet! Do you have any pics inside the bed to show the cnotch and how you cut the wheel wells to fit the rims?

I do. I'll post some when I get home. Thanks!

so you narrowed the rearend to make the rims fit in the stepside wheel wells?

jblaust 02-23-2013 12:04 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

I just bought a 1968 stepside and im planning on bagging it right porterbuilt strong arms in the front and bolt in c notch and 4 link in the back with e-level and accuair compressors

Jimbabwe 02-23-2013 12:06 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Yes. It's a must with the stepside if you want to be that low. Narrowed 8 1/2".
The step notch, and all other suspension components are made by Porterbuilt, if you are not familiar with them. I highly recommend checking them out. The bedsides are cut right up to the top inside of the fenders--just above that center bolt.

Oops, we typed that at the same time! So then you know!

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

The first few pics actually show you the inside, although it was cut up the additional inch or so that was still there to get more clearance and lower.

jblaust 02-23-2013 12:13 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

how much did it cost to narrow the rearend? was it a pain in the butt?

jblaust 02-23-2013 12:14 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

still have to body lift the bed right?

Jimbabwe 02-23-2013 12:17 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

It was 2 and change. I wrote here somewhere. 1st or 2nd page.
Body lift bed? To get it off? It was lifted on a lift at a shop. Much easier, but 2 guys can lift a bed. I did it with the fleet I had before this.

what i meant is dont you have to raise the bed floor 4 or 5 inches to clear the cnotch and the wheels if your laying frame?

Jimbabwe 02-23-2013 12:56 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

You could raise the entire floor (more than 4-5" on this) or you could cut the center section out. Mine just had a piece of plywood in the bed, so that's all I did because I'm not sure if I want it raised, or just with a notch cover yet.

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

l'm Loving the look of your StepSide,Very Cool. i have one that i'm about to get started on soon as all the porterbuilt parts get in. Has Nate told you what rear sway bar will work with your setup? Mine will be the inboard bag setup narrowed rear as well and I think a sway bar would help out alot. Keep posting!!!!!!!

Jimbabwe 03-16-2013 11:39 PM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Thanks! I appreciate that. Nate did mention the possibility of adding a rear swaybar after the suspension install was completed, although I haven't asked him any more about it yet, but I do agree it seems like a good idea. You haven't ordered it yet with the rest of the dropmembered stuff?
Post 'em up once you get it going, I'd like to see the progress.

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

I need to give Nate a call this coming week and talk to him about a rear sway bar, i haven't seen one for the rear on his website.. my parts should be here in the next few wks as soon as i get started wrenchin on it i plan on starting a build thread. how is the
5" backspacing working out on the front? i talked to 'SPOT' a few times about his setup and he's runnig 6.25 on the front, just wounding how your 5" bs is workin out with PB DM, since i haven't ordered wheels yet.

Jimbabwe 03-17-2013 12:08 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Yeah, I didn't see the rear swaybar on their site either. It may be something they can build if you'd like one, not sure.
My front backspacing is actually 4.5". That's because those wheels were on my previous truck that was static dropped and when I ordered them that's what everyone running static seemed to be using. I notice on the bagged trucks that can be laid out 5.5" seems to be popular. I don't have any issues, except if the truck is almost on the ground the tires slightly rub the inside edge of the fender when trying to fully turn to lock. I may roll the fenders, but it's not really necessary. I'll go with more backspace if/when I get different wheels. I did run the CPP modular spindles which narrow the track width as well as the PB control arms, so that helps.
Did you talk to Spot recently? I haven't seen anything new on his page. I love that truck.

1lo67 03-17-2013 12:21 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

I plan on going with either 5.5 or 6.0 backspacing , i also ordered the CPP Modular spindels, D52 calipers and dimpled/slotted rotors. havent talked to Spot in awhile i think he's pretty busy at work. i love that truck also it's what got me thinking about puting a stepper on the ground. But i think yours is kickass to!!! tonight is the first time i've seen it.. it needs to be over in the build section it would get a ton of hits over there. I'l talk to Nate this week about the rear sway bar and let you know what he comes up with.

Jimbabwe 03-17-2013 12:39 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Yeah, it was his truck that made me pick up this stepper after looking for another one for a while, with the same intention of bagging this time around.
Thanks again for the positive words. Maybe I should have a mod move this over to the build section and go back in time and post a bunch of the many pics I have. I don't want to bore anyone with the same old sameold. Mine's got nothing on some of those trucks!
Yes, let me know what they tell you about the swaybar.

1lo67 03-17-2013 12:57 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Man your truck is Sweet and you want bore anyone on this fourm with pics!!!!
POST AWAY I SAY...lol Start a build thread over in the build section i wanna see more..... what drive shaft you gonna run a one or two piece?
Soon as it talk to someone over at Porterbult about the sway bar i'l let you know.

Jimbabwe 03-17-2013 01:03 AM

Re: PB bagged 69 stepside-because Leon asked...

Hah! Nice.
The driveshaft is a two piece.
