I bought my `63 SW #3C144A1227765 about 4 yrs. ago near Rochester, NY within sight of Lake Ontario, a long way from it's Atlanta birthplace...like it was trying to defect to Canada :>{
I didn't know enough to decode the VIN but I could tell, looking at the undercarriage, that it hadn't spent long in the rustbelt.
It will soon be moving with me from PA to North Carolina... closer to it's kin.

1/2 Ton LWB , Oakland factory, and 117th off the line. Out of interest how many per day did they make and what date did the 1st one role off the line? Was it 1st Jan each year?

Mine was imported to UK in Nov 14, US title says Eagle Point OR 97524, would be cool if I could put some history together.

I'll see what I can dig up on total production. I had some documentation on it a few years ago and then the big house move happened and everything got boxed/mixed up.

Production started at number 100,000 for the trucks.....as far as numbers made per day....would probably very by plant. With your being #117, I'd feel safe to say the first couple of days production though.

1963 Chevrolet C10

Pickups with 6.5 foot boxes, Step-Side, Fleetside, Panel and Suburban models where available in 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive. These new models came with a new coil-spring front suspension along with the introduction of a few new 6 cylinder engines; the 230 and 292 series. Also new for 1963 was the introduction of the alternator. Calendar year production on the 1963 models totaled 483,119. An astonishing 1/3 of every truck produced during this year was a Chevrolet.

A 1963 Chevrolet Pickup can be distinguished by the grille which had a more egg-crate appearance and headlamp bezels and Chevrolet lettering was accented in black. Parking light lenses where the same as previous years, except federal regulations now required the automotive industry to change from clear to amber.

Re: 1963 Truck VIN #'s

chevrobilia in California has his own personal collection of literature and is researching the history of the GM plant in Oakland. I asked him about the change from Oakland ( O designaton ) to Fremont ( H designation ).

He wrote
"The last truck built at Oakland was serial 152028 in June '63. I show that 8,607 trucks had been built at Fremont by the end of September, but believe that truck production may have begun there in August."

According to my Vin, that would put my truck close to the last of production in June in Oakland.

If they had the 1963 Chevrolet trucks already built for the " Check the Champ " BaJa run by June of 1962, and built 52028 trucks there before Oakland closed in June of 63 that would average 142 trucks per day roughly, assuming they assembled 365 days a year.

First post so I thought i would start here. VIN for my 63...3C144S191123. Sold new at Stevens Chevrolet in LaCenter Ky to My Grandpa. I remember riding in it when I was very small. I know before Kindergarden cause we moved away before I started school, remember my sister bouncing out of the back going across a field too.
Since this is my first post I will try to add a pic but no photobucket and no pics on the laptop. I will try to add from phone. Love this site, been creeping for a while and joined a year or so ago but couldn't post. Got that fixed today!!

Trying pic but not sure how to get it from managed to here. Hoping it pops up but not holding breath.

WOW, even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while!!
This look is circa 1982 ish. I got this when grandpa died in 1980, put a cassette and equalizer with two speakers in the floor and drove it stock for a year while I fixed a 240Z. Then in 1982 a friend and me painted it this color, inside a cream. Friends mom covered the seat and another friend was installing new carpet so I got a scrap piece and put some felt from the paper mill under that. New white oak with clear in the bed. Had white spokes and some big tires that were junk but all I could afford. Drove it a little then parked it inside till I wrecked my Datsun PU and had to put it back into service in 86. Put these wheels and tires on then. Married in 87, engine was smoking on accell and decell. Trans had a bearing going down and brakes were starting to leak. In 88 I bought a 67 ford with a 390 and built it so I could park the 63. It went into the garage of our first house in sept of 88 and has seen sun three times since then, onto a trailer to Atlanta and back inside. Onto a trailer again for a move back to here and into Moms garage where it has been since 97 till six months ago when I got it and brought it home and back inside.
A long story leading up to now but middle of Aug senior daughter needed a truck for homecoming parade at school on Sept 4th and wanted to ride in the 63. I had pulled the front clip and blown it apart to blast the inner fenders and rad support, engine was on floor with trans, and I had a touch over two weeks to make it go. Friend gave me a used 350 that "smoked when started, would smoke the tires in the 65 it was in and didn't make any noise", to get me going. I made the mistake of pulling pan to put a new gskt on and found a piston skirt!! Lets just say after a new crank and related, pistons, valve lap, and trans bearing I drove it around the block at 7:30 PM sept 3rd. This pic was taken at 1:00AM Sept 4th after a wash, hand buff with 3M finesse middle and final stage and a carnuba wax. The parade was a success and I can't stop driving it!! Sorry so long, I will try to start a build thread for details.
