Thanks guys, here are a couple more pics of the installed cross member. I still have to burn in the upper mounts completely with the 230 at work. I also added a picture showing the tire clearance in the front. The tire will be cambered in more than it is right now as well.

Wow, that looks great, super nice job on the build of crossmember and components...Jim

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Thanks man, I have about $38 invested in the entire thing. The 1/4 wall I made the crossmember out of and the 1/2 I used for the upper control arm mounts I had laying around for years. The only thing I purchased was the 1/4 wall DOM for the lower mounts. Sure beats Flat Outs $1000 price tag. Sure was more work (lots more) but more rewarding as well. Cant wait to redo the back now and make it a full roller.

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Nice job Josh. Hope you don't mind but I'm going to copy the ride height, rim style and size, offset etc and tire size. That's the stance I'm after. Is the UCA mount parallel with the LCA mounting points? Kinda curious, why didn't you weld in the rack mounts and gusset the LCA mounts before you welded the cross member to the frame? You had things braced and that would have been a good time to gusset to stop movement during welding. Just wondering. That's all. A little on how you came up with the location of the cross member. How did you determine the vertical and horizontal location?

As nice as the Flat Out cross member is, the price tag is what's making me make one as well. Keep posting pictures! If only you made them a bit bigger.

It's quite impressive what you've done so far.

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

I didnt do the rack mounts yet because Im not 100% set on wether I will use the Vette rack or use a T-Bird rack. The mounts for the T Bird rack are much simpler. I will add the gussets after I determine which rack Im goint to use, that way the gussets wont dictate how/where I mount the rack. As for the placement I put my fenders on and positioned my wheels where I wanted them, than marked my wheel center on the chassis. After that I used Flat Outs mounting instructions based on my wheel center. I will gladly mail you a copy of their instructions if it will help you.

Josh your chassis is killer man keep up the good work love the direction your going with the truck. When you are at the car show and people ask where did you get your frame and you can say I made that, there will be no better felling than that.

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Thanks man, I appreciate that. Building the chassis from scratch myself has been a lot of work so far but very rewarding as well.

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

OK, so not a lot of time in the garage this week but I did pick up some parts. Got a good 4l60e to go behind my 5.3, picked up two more sticks of 2x4 .120 wall so I can re-do the rear of my chassis as well as build some crossmembers, etc. Hope to get started on that this weekend. Looking forward to some nice weather this weekend!

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Did you end up figure our your spring rate? More IFS cross members or tranny and such? Weather is warming up a bit here. Hockey is not done yet but I plan on being out in the shop. New bottle of welding fuel so we can lay some bead. Have a good weekend and take some pics!

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Crossmembers for the trans, etc as well as redoing the rear half of the frame. I think I am just going to order the coilovers from FlatOut, that way I know they will work as designed.

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Very nice work. I've been working on a VERY similar build this past year but I started with a frame and used the Flatout kits. I'm pretty much at the same point too. I even have the same wheels (larger tires though) and engine..... You'll be ahead of me very soon. Great work again and very inspirational.

Got that 5.3 mounted yet?

STOCKISH 03-13-2014 10:21 PM

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Yes, it is mounted..... on the engine stand! The cab is back on the chassis though and I hope to finish the back half of the frame this weekend, Then I can mount the engine once I pick up the trans to bolt to it.

Awesome build!! definitely following this build. You sized the tires perfectly!!

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Thanks guys. Made some small progress this weekend. Got the new rear frame rails made and welded up. I will attach the rear suspension this week and then attach the new rear rails to the originals I left behind. I will let the rear rails run all the way to the firewall giving me two rails under the cab eliminating flex.

Heres a little more progress. New rear frame section clamped temporarily to old frame section to determine wheelbase. Coming together slowly.

I see what do did there..........STOCKISH. Looks good dude! Are you trying to put the dog bones under the frame rail as opposed to the side?

That is so damn nice it's crazy. Really nice job you are doing, really nice. Now THAT is the way to upgrade one of these trucks if you have a bum frame or what to have it all new, just beautiful!

LOL,
The name threw me off,
I had a question: are you going to end and chamfer the rear frame section into the rear side of the front crossmember? Either way I really like what you did with the rear section. Again man, you have some great fab skills!!!

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Kinda sorry you decided to ditch the 292 but the 5.3 will be more fun. I'm building a 300 hp, 310 torque 292 for a '52 6400 I have.

You shouldn't have any trouble selling the 292 if there is a rat rod crowd in your area.

Awesome build on the frame. I have a minor mod to make to mine compared to yours. I need to extend the frame a couple feet to move the bed and axle back. Should be a cake walk after looking at this...;)

Re: 1954 3100 C4 Tube Chassis Build

Thanks guys, Yeah the name change threw some people off. Figured STOCKISH fit since thats how I like my trucks. And my trucks licene plate will read STOCKISH as well! fabguy, I hadnt planned on attaching the rear frame rails to the front crossmember, however, it wouldt be a bad idea, maybe a little overkill though? My plans were to end them at the firewall but nothings set in stone quite yet.

Hey Sid, Plans are to bolt the dog bones through the chassis, but depending on any issues I may attach the bracket to the rear of the kickup. Again, nothings set in stone.
