Re: Trucks Are Beautiful

Thanks for all the effort to show the pictures and, of coarse, for taking them all.

This truck here just may be the best. We look at these old yet perfectly restored trucks and get to see how they actually looked when they were the current truck and how things got moved in that time period. Just think, this was the best you could do and a huge improvement over what came before. We see trucks lacking what our trucks have today. But dang! Think about just the horsepower and brakes. Going and stopping were challenges. Even beyond that, this was before we even had pneumatic tires for heavy trucks. Yeah, basically they didn't even have tires (as we know them) yet! then look at the lighting, kerosene lamps! Before heading out or when you hit a bank of fog you had to go around and light all the lanterns. and that is only after you made sure to keep them all full of fuel. I dunno, I just am nuts about old trucks, rolling history. Not just how we got around back then, like with cars. Think of all the other products and services of the time and these are the trucks that moved the nation, made it what it is.

I also want to say how disappointed in myself I am for not going up to Macungie Fathers Day weekend. No pictures to share and I really lost out on a highpoint of my year. This is just the kind of stuff I missed seeing, so thanks again for a great substitute

You are welcome.
The last set of pictures was my favorite truck too.
It is neat to see how the trucks progressed in time.

It sure is. That Cat is really cool. I saw a similar one at Macungie last year. It was being hauled behind an old but newer Mack dump truck on a dolly trailer. I watched the guy start the Cat. If you don't know how they do it, you insert a long bar into a hole you can see in the flywheel. It took a lot of effort. I can't imagine starting in wintertime

Very nice.

I have seen some of the old Cats being started with the long bar. Some of the Thresheree (old tractor show) have a giant sand box for the old construction equipment to play in.

Neat stuff. I've been wanting to get into the antique construction equipment club action, as well as farm tractor shows. Both have them put to work. I know some antique truck club guys who are more about the equipment and the old truck is just to have a hauler that fits the outfit.

My old friend who I go to these shows with has a diesel White dump truck like that, Cummins NA. I forget the size. It just sits and he has offered it to me for $2,000. I could swing that and it's actually pretty nice with good rubber. Well, once all the tree dropping are washed away. The problem is the other money it would take and what has always been a problem that has kept me from big truck ownership. Where do I put her? I'm not sure I want another mouth to feed at this point in life

Tim, I've got a little put aside for that 9500 Single Axle I'm looking for. But it just won't show up, lol. Not locally anyway. Now that would get me to the truck shows for sure, lol.

I think just that one. It's mostly later trucks up there. I didn't get to walk all the way through them all. They said it was a record number of show trucks this year. It was a lot!

Sweet little corn binder.

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/19...nal-d-300-coe/

This 1940 International Harvester D-300 is a 1-1/2 ton cab-over-engine model that is powered by a 233ci inline-six paired with a four-speed manual transmission. The body is finished in green with black fenders and features a replacement bed with a wood floor and side stakes, a tilt-out windshield, a dually rear axle, and body-color steel wheels. The truck was acquired by the seller approximately five years ago, and work in preparation for the sale is said to have included an oil change, a carburetor rebuild, and replacement of the spark plugs and fuel filter.

Last load before 9 days off the big road.

Rear Disc brake swap on the 68
Get our K5 to roller status
Possibly get the axle seal in the 73 fixed, sat since September

Still looks modern in my book! Narrow nose tilt front end would make this logger a 358, not a butterfly 351.

Great series! Brings back memories of my time living in Humboldt County in the mid-70s. Redwood haulers were still carrying single log loads. Bark laying along the side of the road and piggybacks heading back

You never see these anymore

True. Saved in that way, if it was in that bad of condition. It just seems all the old cabovers are going down this road. It's nice to see one still useful

I miss all the fleet paint jobs. Estes Express Lines, out of Richmond, VA still run their traditional livery, yellow, black fenders, red chassis and wheels. If the modern trucks still did the paint jobs we could at least enjoy seeing the paint

I miss these boxy cabovers of the 60's. With inflation, approx $950M since this was written. A downward spiral since 1979, not just in trucks........................................

Definitely very nice. I think I like any tandem made by one of the Big 3 auto companies. Older is better but I like them all. It seems we most saw/see them on the lighter end, usually single rear and usually straight trucks. The other day at the crossroad I sat across from a white '80s Ford tandem log truck and thought even that looked cool. Looked tough! It was one of those "take another look" moment of seeing it in a different way than when that style was everywhere.

I didn't find any pictures of an '80s F-series tandem. These old trucks will have to do

Back to fleet paint schemes. Trucks are beautiful even when they're dirty! I know Bill mason from the ATHS gatherings. He and his son run a heavy haul outfit out of Baltimore. Long before I knew anything about him I noticed his trucks and would run by his shop on my way to pick up materials in Balto. Then when I moved into this house, one of my neighbors worked for him. And eventually I got to meet him through ATHS. He is an International Man, which is a little different for an independent outfit into custom-built trucks. He owns a Mack B and other brands in his collection, but he works Internationals. Then there is his paint scheme, that IH dark green with shades of yellow to orange stripes and orange chassis. He definitely likes what he likes and his taste has grown on me.
