And around here the WINNER is.......BOB! :D
Looks like good progress Bob. I see you were using your flash in those pictures, good plan. ;) Oh, when it was up on the jack stands it almost looks like stock height.

I think that is about the old ride height! And Yeah, flash is good. Don't want any misinterpretations, or to scare anybody! :haha:

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

You are using an OE radiator, correct?

I swear this question was asked, and answered, in this thread someplace but I can't find it now. My crewcab needs a new radiator, bad, but if the stock one isn't swap-friendly I'll patch it up somehow for the time being.

I bought 1972supercheyenne's extra harness the other day. Even if I ain't in the game yet at least I'm AT the game.

glock35ipsc 04-07-2010 09:14 PM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

Yes, the OEM radiator is very swap friendly. When you do get your engine, if it's not a super high mileage one, be sure to get the upper rad hose too. Since the donor truck's upper rad hose is in the same position as the OEM rad, it's a direct fit.

Pull up a seat and grab some beer. With all the GenIII swaps going on in here right now, it's a great game!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

Hey Bob, I'm sure it's mentioned somewhere in here, but I'm too lazy to dig through 41 pages to find it lol.
What size tires you running and how far have you dropped it?

glock35ipsc 04-07-2010 11:51 PM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

65 pages, but who's counting?

BFG 275/60-15 all around on 15x8 wheels. Cut one coil from the front, and removed the second leaf from the bottom in the rear. Front and rear springs are original as far as I know. I'll probably cut another 1/2 coil from the front here soon. It has right at 1-1/2" rake, which leaves almost equal space front and rear from the top of the tire to the edge of the wheel well. I want that gap in the front to be slightly lower than the rear.

qu1cks1lver56 04-07-2010 11:58 PM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

Haha, 41 pages if you have 40 posts per page lol.

And thanks, that's close to the stance I've been thinking I want, but wasn't sure on exactly how much to lower or what tire size I'd need.

I see it totally different. I am rejoicing in the hundreds of dollars I'll save by having someone like Bob and others who has been there, done that. Show individualism in paint or in your choice of wheels. Hats off to ya Bob.

I think it's kind of the same thing when building any hot rod.... a lot of good ideas have already been done, but take something you like and put your own spin on it. Just like you did with the truck intake you smoothed out. That was the first one I had seen. Didn't you smooth out and polish the rocker covers too?

I ordered all the AC hose and fittings from http://www.docsblocks.com/. I found the crimp tool on their site, but then I searched around the net to find the best price, which happen to be Amazon.com of all places. I also ordered a new evap line (the aluminum line that runs from the evaporator to the condenser) off of Amazon.com for about $20 less than anywhere else.

Thanks man! My whole life has revolved around finding the best deals and saving money. It's almost a game to me! I'm just happy we have a place like this to share the info. :metal:

thanks man when you use the tool please post it up with detail how you ordered all the right fittings and all that. Because i want to change to a serpatine system on my truck and dont want to pay to get the lines done.

glock35ipsc 04-08-2010 10:23 AM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

Honestly, if your lines are in good condition (soft and pliable, not hard and un-flexible) doing what you want to do would move the compressor from the drivers side to the passenger side, correct? All you would probably have to do is cut the hoses to the right length, and have two fittings crimped on. In your case you would be using the same compressor (most likely). You would cut the aluminum lines at the compressor manifold leaving an inch or two. Then you would solder these on to the aluminum lines:

http://docsblocks.com/prodimages/AC0098.jpg

That would solder on to the aluminum lines at the manifold, then install the hoses and crimp. I would bet you could find a local hydraulic shop that would crimp them for next to nothing, if not free.

Which is what I am doing with the large line that runs off of the accumulator. I'll cut it, solder on one of those ^^^ on, then crimp on the hose that runs to the compressor.

54Caddy 04-08-2010 08:11 PM

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

actually my truck has the larger style compressor and the serp system that im going to use takes the smaller version and does move it to the passenger side. I will be using a serp system off of a 94 chevy pickup. I also wanted to see if they had steel braided ac lines.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

yeap.. the problem was the guy sold me a 2008 tranny knowing I need it a 2005 , then it worked just fine for a couple of hundread miles then it burned,,, the junk yard owner sent it to a independent transmission shop with the understanding between us that if it was the wire harness(which I modified) I was going to pay for the repairs, but if it was the transm. because being newer he was going to take care of it, = I didnt pay a thing and they even installed a high performance band and corvette servo...:metal: I am ordering the drop kit and wheels with in the next couple of months .

What do you think caused it? Could it be the weight of the fuel hose hanging off the end of it, pulling it down and bouncing around until it's stressed too much? Did it just pop off, or break off?

I thought about this when I was hooking it back up last weekend after swapping to the braided hose. That's quite a bit of weight hanging there. I might make a little bracket of some sort to support the weight that's being put on that fitting.

i was thinking the same Bob. i'm going to see if i can mount the line on the firewall some how just for support.

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

bob I dont have a pic of it.. you know me I dont take many pics.. but I dont have any weight on it... I have it attached with dont know the exact name of those things but kind of like a clap around the hose and bolted to a bolt on the frame one on the air condensor housing bolt etc etc,any ways.. I didnt have any weight on it... It didnt break just snaped off, snaped back in.. I and went for a drive still good. how ever I have an extra one,, but I dont feel lets say, safe with them.. there was a post on ls1tech about them, some people are changing the inside plastic clip with the oem metal one..anyways,, I dont know what happened since it was already there for a couple of months... good luck .. .

I travel about 3 miles round trip of gravel roads to and from my house to the main roads, and mine is still on, so hopefully I got a good one! But I might do the same just to be safe, get a factory steel one that is. Thanks for the tip/warning!!!

Re: Glock's new project: "Fred" w/ 5.3L LS swap info

The AC is getting closer. I managed to get the hose from the condenser to the compressor cut and fitted this weekend. Just waiting on the crimp tool, the one fitting for the compressor to accumulator line, and the brazing rings to arrive (tool should be here today, fitting and rings hopefully today or tomorrow) and I can get all the hoses finished up.

This is the low side line from the accumulator to the compressor. If the OE hoses would have been is better condition, I would have just cut the hose and crimped on a threaded fitting. But I ended up cutting the aluminum line coming right off the accumulator and will braze on this fitting, then will crimp the hose onto it. I'm waiting for the brazing rings from Docs Blocks to finish this. I tried with solder and flux I have, but it's not quite the right stuff.

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...ewlowside4.jpg

I also FINALLY got the body off of the Burb yesterday. Now I can get the frame cleaned up and find me an old GenIII block and start mocking up a swap kit. I have no idea what to do with the body, other than cut it up and take it in for scrap. I might cut out the wheel wells and same extra metal around them just to save for ???

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...00411-1814.jpg

I had to post this too, my chauffeur for the weekend. And no that's not an exhaust leak, that's my dog. He's a little pooped after chasing his tennis ball that I was hitting for him with a baseball bat.

The expanded end is part of the fitting I ordered from Docs Blocks.

Check out the videos at Docs Blocks:

I bought it from etooldirect.com, but the price was better through their store on Amazon.com, which is where I ordered it from. $158.89 shipped.

Thanks a lot man, I appreciate that! He's a pretty cool kid, loves hanging out in the shop helping me with whatever he can, and he loves the 67-72 trucks. He is trying to talk his Grandpa out of his 69 project to have for his own. The 70 K10 he is driving just happens to be the very same truck I learned to drive in about 30 years ago when I was about his age (he is 9). We had 80 acres back then, and I probably put hundreds of mile on that truck (Goldie) bouncing around out in the back pasture. Dad gave me the title to it a couple years ago, and it will probably end up being my son's some day too (of course, he might have to fight his little sister for it! ). It's most likely our next project.

http://i191.photobucket.com/albums/z...c/DSC00655.jpg

Well, the crimper works very good. Bryce and I went out to the shop when I got home and pulled the one hose off that I have both ends for. Clamped the crimper in the vise, and it took all of a few seconds on each end to crimp them down. Kind of disappointing in a way, I was looking forward to a little more excitement than that! :haha: But they turned out pretty good.

Maybe you should start a mail order tool rental for all your good buddies on here ;)
