Nice work on that heater box. I like the three-dimensional fold up planning.

Evening mate,

Yes, Sally’s uncle was the fittest of the three.

So unexpected, but thats life.

His one daughter will take on the dog, not sure about the two cats he seems to have had as well.

The MX5 was truly dead, nothing left to remove from the carcass.

I have everything off it that could be used and removed..

It is not possibly a new refrigerator. Scrapped last week.

Heater box needs more work, but I welded it up this morning.

More later.

Pretty pleased with the first job I did this morning.

Shaped and clamped the folded box, took a bit of time to make it all square up.

But it worked out in the end.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5071.HEIC

More work done through the rest of the day.

Back in a bit for those who are interested.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

I felt like a kid, caught out being naughty yesterday.

Had @pauly over by 09.00 to collect the cab lifter for Woody his C10 bought in 2015 https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...0-eagle-landed

As well as his blasting pot, and a quick bacon sandwich with a mug of tea.

After he left I had gone and carried on down at the garage, followed by a visit from Stuart my one neighbour to collect his large die that I had used to clean up the track rod ends when I reset the front wheel tracking last week.

When he left it was time for a coffee, which I had just finished when @nickwhheler arrived, me sitting indoors reading the internet.

More coffee, note comparing, planning and then off to the garage.

Nick brought gifts………

He can explain them.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5075.HEIC

First job was to remove the front grille, make space and do one more trial fit, then tack weld it all in place the steering rod.

Not as tight as it looks, and later I would remove what was left of the original Ford engine mount.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5078.HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5079.HEIC

Then final weld up.

More about this later.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5082.HEIC

In the mean time it had become time to address the relocated position of the MX5 gear lever vs original Ford position.

The MX5 gearbox is small, and lower than the original Ford part.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5085.HEIC

Marked, cut, and then fine tuned the piece of MX5 tunnel I had removed. This will allow a Mazda part to be bolted in place once I have a gear lever extender screwed in place.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5088.HEIC

5th gear position was what mainly drove the relocation, as the original box would have been a 4 speed I suspect.

Happy with this position too.

Loads of small fabrication jobs done.

Nick also carried on with modifications to the battery bridge and its mounts.

Coffee was consumed constantly, the machine needs fueling.

Grizz1963 02-27-2022 04:04 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

The afternoon flew by with Nick and I continuing with a load of small jobs that are all part of the bigger job at hand.

At one point John, my current short term lodger came home, he needed a place to store his Yamaha V-Max powered trike, so I said to just bring it here.

Sounds magnificent.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5087.HEIC

In the mean time it was once again time for the body to come off.

Allowing me to cut out the remaining Ford engine mount and for Nick to drill some holes in the chassis, followed by welding in captive threaded nuts he had made to act as a foundation for the battery bridge and as foolproof earth points for the power and loom.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5092.HEIC

Body up again.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5093.HEIC

Resulting in…….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5090.HEIC

With the body on the trolley I carried on with another fiddly, time consuming job.

Removing and refitting the steering column repeatedly till all the grinding resulted in a free spinning knuckle.

John the lodger was adding a hand and camera skills.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...3b8a94e56b.jpg

6mm aluminium plate plus a few layers of firewall……

Eventually slick, clearance created, time not wasted but consumed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5110.HEIC

More cleaning up, grinding back, tidying.

Through the day things like the steering shaft, gearbox mount, fender brackets, radiator brackets etc all got painted and cleaned up, in preparation for final (We hope) mounting when the body goes back one more time.

It is amazing the amount of work that goes into this build that is not recorded or reported.

I liked this posting on a South African Adventure Biking Forum by a member “EssBee”

True for both Nick and I, but more so for me, learning so much as the build progresses.

Nice work, Grizz, and a LOT of it at that....one doesn't realise how much there is to do in a project like that. Also...it's not stuff you've done before, every step of the way is new to you and requires a brand new line of thought figuring how you're going to go about it. Lot's of kopkrap/head scratching for you guys.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...7c833d0356.jpg

Nick continued to remove excess materials, parts and obstructions all the time.

By 18.30 we put down the power tools as I needed to spend a bit of time with Sally and make dinner.

Nick and I usually have a post mortem after the day ends for 30-60 minutes to discuss next jobs, plans, materials needed.

One of the jobs that ended up happening while discussing was to remove the complex, space wasting clutch pipe assembly……. More about that later.

He also managed to bleed over the wiring loom up front while removing excess cabling.

As the battery bridge was completed the next trick was to simplify and reroute some power cables to and from the starter. More about that later too.

Suffice it to say that it was a great day again, and huge thanks to Nick for coming to play.

We closed shop just after 19.00 in the end, two more ad-hoc jobs done.

Final pic, tidy wiring and bridge in place.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5114.HEIC

Sunday will be a new firewall plate, many holes, brake and fuel lines…….

And a multitude of other things to do.

Progress is happening.

Grizz1963 02-27-2022 03:30 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Short night.

Woke knackered.

Bloody war in Ukraine has people behaving like idiots.

Sally could not get fuel on the way to work at 05.00 so texted me to go get her some petrol in case things turned silly again.

So I took the diesel company car, with less than 100 miles range left. And my days are a minimum of 65 miles.and a couple of Jerry cns.

Got to the gas station…… No Diesel.

So I went home, got the S10 and the Jerry cans and headed back, £108 later I had 25 litres for Sally, and the truck filled as it was also on empty.

Got back home around 09.30 and had breakfast and read a bit, before going to the garage, before I stepped out the house Nick arrived.

So another coffee, checking manuals and creating a shopping list of bits to purchase.

While indoors I ordered a set of 7 inch LED headlights. For the car too.

Looking forward to seeing them.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(89).jpg

Then down to the garage.

First job was to drill the chassis and lay the two nylon fuel lines, and the rear brake line that @nickwheeler had made up and laid.

Chassis clips ordered last week, to be collected.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5130.HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5133.HEIC

Drilling with 5mm and then an 8mm drill meant I could get the fuel lines sorted pretty quickly.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5132.HEIC

Fuel lines laid, bit invisible against the black chassis.

Nick also connected them to the front end at the engine.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5134.HEIC

Another of many small jobs was to drill through to the rear for the rear wiring looms, they will be fed through on ground level, Nick sorted that while I was drilling the chassis.

And then of course the transmission tunnel needed to be cut to allow the blower unit to fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5140.HEIC

Resulting in a huge hole.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5146.HEIC

So the next job on this will be making it fit, then closing the transmission tunnel again when I do the fiberglass work on the floor, tunnel and a few other spots.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Lunch was a couple of Ginsters chicken and Bacon meat pasties.

First time I had them, and enjoyed them.

One of todays jobs with the body coming of again as well, was getting the battery bridge finished……….

Followed by a support for the airbox.

And most importantly for @Nickwheeler and I would be getting the steering sorted.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5149.HEIC

Lifting the body again meant a few Riv-Nuts could be fitted and one knocked out and replaced.

This was to ensure the body mounting points to the chassis were all secure and present.

So the Riv-Nut tool.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5162.HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5160.HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5161.HEIC

PITA body of and on.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5159.HEIC

Next up was to refit the breathing system.

First job was to cut off the resonator, prepare for more noise.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5157.HEIC

Also refitted the second time was the steering rod.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5154.HEIC

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5155.HEIC

So the steering is back, for the first time in months.

VIDEO:

https://youtu.be/29bKFUqFDok

Nick left at 4.30 sharp for a5.00pm meeting.

And I cleaned up down at the garage.

Progress again today.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5169.HEIC

So the weekend is pretty much over again.

But very satisfied as we managed to get a few jobs progressed andmactually the steering is ticked off the list.

Thanks for checking in.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Despite having bought a pair of LED headlights thesecame on my radar today.

May be 6” and I need 7” but I like them.

Now could one find them in the UK or a UK source?

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/IMG_5182.JPG

Saw these too, love them.

Anyone know?

Grizz1963 03-02-2022 05:17 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Bought some bits to go with getting the Flux Capacitor going.

One if the things I remember from all the years friends had beach buggies, kit cars etc, was that earthing could be an issue.

So hopefully these will sort that out.

Also supersized jubilee clips for the MAF connecting hose.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(90).jpg

Need to get some fuel line clips and a bunch of other bits.

I was shocked at the price of brake line chassis clips, or P-Clips as they are known, and actually declined them at £45.00 a pack, so need some of them too when @nickwheeler and I go to Car Builder Solutions to pick up a few specialist bits that are still needed.

Have a good day.

Grizz1963 03-03-2022 02:45 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

After the shock of the price quoted for brake lune clips, I called my local motor spares shop.

10 P-clips with self tapping screws was only £2.00

So to celebrate, I bought a portion of chips with extra salt and vinegar to eat on the way home.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(92).jpg

Treasure

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5222.HEIC

Also delivered, side lights and indicators.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...G_5206(1).HEIC

And certainly one of my favourite items so far….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(93).jpg

Looking forward to getting these fitted.

Also spent two hours in the garage doing some small, time consuming jobs that need doing.

More about that later.

Grizz1963 03-03-2022 03:42 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

I had “promised” Sally pan fried pork chops for dinner, but she had a problem with her heating and water system.

So passed on that.

Perfect opportunity to go into the garage for a couple of hours and knock together a couple of odd shaped brackets, or legs if you want, to support and anchor the airbox.

@nickwheeler and I had been discussing these for a while but other jobs kept displacing the job on the priority list.

So first thing was to scavenge some steel.

But only after another small job.

Remember we cut off the resonator on the air feed?

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5232.HEIC

So it left a hole to fix.

Perfect donor, the windscreen washer bottle cap.

Shaped, glued in place with Soudal crystal glue. And some masking tape to secure while curing.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5233.HEIC

New Jubilee clamps over the MAF and screwed to the engine.

Now I could get on with the job.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5234.HEIC

Got a 6mm steel offcut, cut to shape, test drilled with 7.5mm bit to allow for M8 tapping.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5237.HEIC

Turned out it was too loose with a wobbly thread resulting.

So remade, using a 7mm bit.

Perfect, nice fitting thread.

Then made up leg no 1 to bolt into the chassis on the battery bridge footing.

Happy with that.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5242.HEIC

Followed by welding the threaded plate to the other end.

Looks like it fits too.

After this, leg no 3 was created.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5247.HEIC

May need a bit of cross bracing, but need to see it all bolted down first.

It may be stable enough.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5245.HEIC

So two weird brackets and a hole closed, plus a chat with Mickey took up two hours.

Giving me these.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5250.HEIC

That now look like this.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5251.HEIC

Very pleased with that.

Another job ticked off the list.

As soon as I drill a hole in the gutter pipe and move the airbox sensor closer to the wiring loom.

Maybe.

Back indoors by 20.00 and warmed up the left over curry from lMonday night at which time John the one lodger got in

So we sat chatting and had a JD Tennessee Honey.

Perfect end to a busy day.

Post Man Pat delivered today……..

And it is already on my toolbox.

Thank you @mr2fc

Maybe not.

Friday tomorrow.

Can’t wait.

Happy Friday. You guys are really getting all the systems handled, great progress. Who wouldn't like to have that tractor that your Siberian buddy sent you a picture of - that thing is cool. But not as the chassis for the RR. BTW, what I was wondering about the MX5 was that much of the body seemed in good shape. Fenders, doors, headlights, etc. You certainly picked the bones clean mechanically, but I was wondering why you, or the guy who received the carcass, couldn't glean a few quid from selling those. Maybe they were in worse shape than they appeared... from here... haha.

Thank you.

I think we both want to to get on with it…..

And progress is rewarding after all.

The MX5 was way too dead.

Loads of damage etc.

I am happy for the £400.00 it cost me.

I think you are right, it was a bit rubbish.

Grizz1963 03-04-2022 04:25 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Well,

Speaking of madness.

Another week done, and it was tough, but I delivered in excess of my expectations, so a reward was in order.

Extended lunch break….?

Popped the garage open.

Then opened the air box and removed the air filter.

DIRTY……..

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5299.HEIC

This was the problem to be addressed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5294.HEIC

With moving the air-box about 600mm or 24” back in the engine bay the sensor wire ended up too short.

Easy to extend the wires.

Easier to remove the sensor……..

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5295.HEIC

Block to hole with a bit of colourful plastic from a laundry detergent bottle cap.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5298.HEIC

Then set the step drill to the right size to replicate the hole for the grommet…….

Drill the hole.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5296.HEIC

Grommet in.

Sensor in.

Refit pipe.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5297.HEIC

Easy fix then.

Little wins that steal time.

One less job for tomorrow or Sunday.

Friday night.

Drinks?

Grizz1963 03-04-2022 04:55 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Right…..

Next job to get done.

One that @nickwheeler was hoping I would get on with. Maybe.

So I removed the battery bridge, which also incorporated part of the air-box support.

Then measured and marked out the holes for the M8 bolts to screw into that would hold the battery strap down, drilled the holes, tapped them.

Perfect.

Than made up the strap and burned the holes and added the eyelets.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5304.HEIC

Also made a pair of “large” plates to replace washers and also grip the strap on the bridge.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(94).jpg

Few more little fine tuning actions, then some paint and final, fitting.

Ohh…. And terminals to be made up of course.

Another little job done.

Bonus Ball for Saturday.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...x/IMG_5974.JPG

Not what I want, but guess it shows what a big check book and a lot of work can deliver.

Back to reality………

Grizz1963 03-05-2022 01:40 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Yesterday afternoon @nickwheeler and I went to Car Builder Solutions to pick up a few parts that were needed for some of the progress.

When I got to his place 10 miles from here, to pick him up, he was “not ready” yet.

Well, all it would take was a pair of shoes tbh. The benefit of having your machine shop under your home.

But, he was busy……..

Fine tuning some bits on the lathe.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5310.HEIC

Leaving this.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5313.HEIC

Resulting in this.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5315.HEIC

To be added to these throttle and clutch parts he had already made up.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(95).jpg

This build certainly is becoming more and more “Hotrod” as it goes along with all the custom bits made for it so far. .

Liking it.

Once Nick had his shoes on, we headed over to Staplehurst to get the parts list filled out.

This included a massive box of waterproof electrical fittings, wiring loom tape, battery terminal protectors, cabling, sheaths, stainless braided hose, clips, bulkhead fittings and a 90’ connector for the new clutch line that needs to be made up to clean up part of the engine bay.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...Render(96).jpg

I had a 4.00pm day job Teams meeting to attend, so dropped Nick off at 3.55 sharply and headed home with the meeting strapped safely into the passenger seat next to me, and me on mute, camera off.

Traffic meant it took me exactly an hour to ger the 10 miles or 16km trip done.

I do dislike traffic.

Today I was awake by 03.20 and that was my night over.

A very wet George the cat came in by 04.45 for some ham and is now tucked up somewhere as I have not heard the catflap again.

It is raining outside, but hopefully once daylight comes etc, I will be able to to get down to the garage and get some stuff done.

Time marches on regardless of the weather.

Onwards in the words of @pauly

.

Grizz1963 03-05-2022 06:12 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Day started with me waking at 03.18

No sleep after that, not ideal.

But once I got started, some housekeeping, and in the 5’C temperature outside, I decided to use my paint stripping heat gun to warm the battery bridge before giving it some satin black

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5345.HEIC

Once that was done I started on some CAD to create the insert for the transmission tunnel to make space for the heater/blower unit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5347.HEIC

Once transferred and cut out of a sheet of Dexian cabinet backing I folded it ……….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5355.HEIC

More to be done, grinding back the hole in the transmission tunnel to almost perfectly square and also a couple of flanges needed cutting to weld onto the sides that can be bolted down.

@nickwheeler came around later as well, and with a coffee kickstart he was off……..

Loads of little jobs, including removing the wiring harness that had been attached to the chassis and then winding up a pair of wires we still have no idea of what they do……

Could be a reverse light.

Any ideas?

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5349.HEIC

Another job Nick had been wanting to do for a few weeks was to relay the loom into the rear of the car, a few more holes are needed to get the fuel system wiring in under rhe rear bed.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5354.HEIC

Also prepared was the earth cable and live wires to get them connected to the battery.

Nick soldered the lugs together as well, kinda impatient jobs.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5350.HEIC

The day turned out to be one of those that showed little, but a ton of stuff got done.

Progressing the build quite a lot more.

Stand by for more updates.

.

Grizz1963 03-06-2022 02:46 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

So actually a really busy day yesterday.

Many time thieves……

We were busy all day till I had to tell Nick to get out and leave at 5.15 as he had a family event.

Sure he would not mind me mentioning, his mum was having her 1 in 4 birthday dinners……

Yup, 29 February is a bit of a rare one.

I welded up the under dash extender tray adding a pair of side flanges for mounting and weather or waterproofing.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5389.HEIC

And once tidied up it looked pretty decent for the job it needs to be doing.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5392.HEIC

Heater matrix box and blower unit tidied up and cut back earlier looks tidy now.

Placed in position.

Happy with that.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5395.HEIC

Once bolted down with some sealant under it, this should be a decent dry space too.

Air blower holes still need to be created and ducted once this unit and all the wiring has been laid and secured.

ECU, Fuse box, controllers still need locating and fixung inder the scuttle once the screen frame is welded and located.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5394.HEIC

One of @nickwheelers jobs on the master list was to create new earth and power leads, relocate some and also create more decent earthing points on the chassis.

A fair chunk of time that you cannot see has been allocated to these jobs.

Resulting in this sort of tidy improvement and install.

Massive thanks again.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5381.HEIC

More invisible jobs include removing chunks of the loom, rerouted cables etc in order to gain an inch or two of movement.

On the drivers side it is now possible to mount some modules upright and in an aesthetic and safe way.

The washer bottle will probably get a hole or two in the bulkhead today.

With power leads being rerouted inside the firewall.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5386.HEIC

Actually getting tidier every day.

Also at last the airbox relocation is complete with the supports in place.

One had to be removed, cut and rewelded by Nick because I screwed up when I got the height and angle wrong by 20mm which is a lot when you try to make stuff look great.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5396.HEIC

After Nick left I finished the blower/heater tray and packed up so Patient, saintly Sally could get a bit of my time.

Today could see a few jobs progress visibly too.

[/quote]The mystery wire is for the reverse lights. But you've just cleared up why there are two other switches on the gearbox instead of just the speed sensor, and what the switch on the clutch pedal does. Which is a big help.

Anyone clever on here …..?

@rich this is the set Nick mentioned.

They are on the passenger side loom, toward the, front, but behind the headlight plugs.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5416.HEIC

And the wires feeding them.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5417.HEIC

Thank you for any help identifying them.

Right……..

Price me this.

Bought by my lodger and some mates to use the chassis for building a ride to be used in the Red Bull Soap Box challenge.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...15d4b852b6.jpg

The wheels were sold to @craigrk, and the motor which is UNTESTED and missing part of the air filter etc is available to me for a bid.

Believed to be a 160cc Chinese copy of a Honda motor.

Wht sort of money is this worth, and also what sort of offer should I make, that is, if you believe it can be gotten to start up,again.

It is planned as part of the bar stool racer I need to build.

If it can be started.

This is it.

So there you go.

Untested motor, was ridden to destruction on a kart by traveller kids, turns over freely, wheels were knackered and indicate a hard life.

I can buy it for a sensibly stupid offer.

So do I buy, try get it to run, or run away.

Thanks.

I don't think I'm much help on that little engine. I did notice that the sticker on the gas tank appears to tell you to be cautious and to read the bible, so I don't know if that helps... I don't think I would want to be bumping into that thing around the place if it wasn't running. So testing it might be a good idea, but you are in the middle of a bunch of other stuff and are on a good roll. Maybe offer them 10 pounds? More if they can get it running? I was thinking you had that neat little Briggs and Stratton already, the gold one. Would much rather have that than a Chinese knockoff, but maybe this is a backup engine?

Agreed.

I think the gold engine is a bit small.

The thing is one can get a cheapish chinese copy engine and save possibly hours worth of fighting with a dead engine.

I will think about it some more.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Sunday

I started earlier than usual with small random jobs that all needed wrapping up and doing at some point, so decided any time is a good time.

A few parts needed painting after welding, grinding, fabrication.

Including the “space maker” recessed tray on the transmission tunnel.

Keep in mind, this was made to create space for the blower unit and heater matrix and box to be fitted in a way that left space for wiring looms, switches, dash cluster, large ECU and various chunky bits of hardware, as well as the pedals and related mechanisms.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5419.HEIC

More time consumed with measure, cut, drill, fold and shaping of the side supports for the dash panel and also side panels that will see he blower exists get fitted.

Need to still get a decent piece of ply, preferably waterproof, for the dash panel and sides plus kick panels.

Job for another day.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5449.HEIC

Another job has been to make the gear stick and hole fit correctly.

Yes, it will need an extension……….

Interestingly, the thread on the stick is different to anything I have, so a quick screw on a nut and long bolt solution for mocking up, did not happen.

Still, happy so far.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5453.HEIC

With the heater box and blower fitted in place, you can see how much space it takes up.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5424.HEIC

But Nick, and others reckon I will be thankful on a chilly spring or autumn evening.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5482.HEIC

More in a bit, day job stuff to deal with.

Grizz1963 03-07-2022 05:42 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

One more small job done.

The gear stick needed to be taller.

Outcome was buying a spare shifter for £5.00 in case it needed to be cut, extended or whatever, and no it would not get cut.

Found an engineering shop who identified/confirmed the thread and agreed to make me an 8” or 200mm threaded extension on 15.8mm rod, with a male and female end to extend the shifter.

Time frame. Less than 24 hrs.

Price. £15.00

I think that is a decent price, free is better of course, but hey, specialised engineering I cannot do.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Struggles with Photobucket that I cannot figure out means some pics are not uploaded from the weekend.

Anyway.

It was cold out.

@nickwheeler sat on his butt most of the day (and that is a bad thing in the cold as moving about generates heat)

He started by deleting a couple of wires from the loom…….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5476.HEIC

Not long before this was the situation.

Airbag loom removed along with plugs.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5473.HEIC

And then it just got worse as we decided that cleaning it up would mean tidy space and less wires to bend and force under the dash.

It also released a few inches of wiring to enable placement of certain parts like fusebox just that much better.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5446.HEIC

Looser fit with the new position of heater motor and the box I welded up for the matrix.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5482.HEIC

Another job I got on with was removing the headlights and buckets, which were also rotten beyond recovery, so the grinder was called into service, again.

The placement of the radiator means the original buckets really are in the way, so a bit of clever thinking once I get a new set of buckets, will be needed, as well as some trimming.

Different sizes.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5475.HEIC

Originals.

Beyond salvation really.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5477.HEIC

We eventually closed shop around 6.00pm as I had offered Nick and Sally dinner.

Leaving the car looking worse for wear, but actually we knew that a load of invisible work had been done over the weekend.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5484.HEIC

After dinner Nick took the wiring loom with him to go remove the door plugs and most of that part of the loom as well.

A few loose tasks set aside for this week, like getting the gear shifter extension made up.

Day job is a bit busy, and evenings are cold.

Another small job I need to get to is making a dual bracket for these guys to mont over the fender.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5479.HEIC

Roll on the weekend.

Progress….?

Grizz1963 03-10-2022 03:32 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Photobucket continues to frustrate me, but at least I seem to have found a way to support my random rambling with phots, using the web based home, vs a mobile app.

Money seems to continue to haemorrhage from my wallet.

Important stuff, current and earthing.

@nickwheeler said so. 😉

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Various nuts n bolts, think sheet metal, firewall, trays etc.

Gloopy silicone, gutter sealant etc for various sealing and joining jobs.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

‘The last few weeks have been quite full on with day job work keeping me busy and away from home (Covid home working was good) and knackered at night.

Tuesday evening I was angry about some dumb stuff at work (seems it makes me more productive to go unwind a bit) so an hour in the garage gave me progress.

Shelving offcut.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Bit of measuring, cutting.

John, the short term lodger is a biker, car guy and driving instructor, and enjoys coming to the garage.

I did not realise he had taken some photos while I was busy focussing.

David the other lodger (Electrician contractor manager at Grain power station) who has been here a year also came down to check if I had lost any limbs yet, and promptly proposed to close down my site for all sorts of H&S infringements.

So different these two guys.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Bit of folding,

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Some holes drilled, bolted to the fender, and we will have the mounting bracket for fuse box and relay as illustrated before.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

This was one of those jobs that the wiring loom unpicking has made easier by adding maybe 50mm of play to it.

Small steps, all take time.

I look at this bracket and kinda wish I had some record of time spent overall like @blackpopracing has on his build.

https://forum.retro-rides.org/thread...glia-shinyness

That is the way to do it.

My Teardrop trailer build was about 360 hours all told, years ago.

Crazy how time adds up.

Grizz1963 03-10-2022 04:11 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

One other job I got done this week was to find out the thread pitch of the MX5.

Then tracked down a Mazda specialist 10 miles from home, who sile me a soare shifter for £5.00 (plan B would be cut and weld)

He then introduced me to an engineering shop aro8nd the corner from where his workshop is.

So we started with this…….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag.../IMG_5482.HEIC

Guy was the guy I spoke to, and he measured the thread and pitch, said they had the correct tap and die to make a male and female extension.

Using 15.9mm steel stock, and set as 200mm or 8 inches he offered to do the job for £15.00 or about $20.00

@nickwheeler and I had agreed that there was no way I could buy materials and produce for that sort of money afterwards when we chatted.

Order placed late afternoon, and collection arranged for the next day.

They are open for small challenging jobs, interestingly, Guy has built a kitcar before, so understands the challenges.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

While waiting for him to confirm the job, I saw this………….

Evidence of an engineering shop that has been there a while, despite being clean and very modern.

Made me smile.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Yesterday morning I had a hospital appointment for myself at 09.00 and afterwards before 10.00 I stopped by at the engineering shop to collect my stick.

Lovely finish.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Back home in the evening I had to go test it out.

REMEMBER……. There is a rubber fitting to go around it, bolted into the yellow piece of MX5 tunnel, and then a leather boot, sheath, or whatever you want to call it.

Feels good in the hand when making Brum Brum noises like @pauly

Doing the maths…….

More than 1 inch below the tunnel, and shifter knob takes up 2 inches, leaving the actual stick being about 5 inches or 150mm long.

Neutral.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

First gear…….

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Second gear, fourth and reverse are all the same.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Small steps, but Progress nonetheless.

Looking forward to the weekend.

Hopefully more stuff getting made, attached, tested.

Bleeding all over.

Perfect.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Message from Nick Wheeler yesterday.

He had taken the whole wiring loom with him on Sunday after dinner.

I've been destructive too:

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

The body loom no longer has any airbag, window, central locking, stereo, headlight aim or air conditioning wiring. It looks a lot less intimidating, and is much more malleable.

Quick bit of checking yesterday showed the base plate of the gear lever needs replacing.

However, the question is how to remove the old and fit the new.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Also tried my Paul Walker memorial knob, more gears than the gearbox actually has……..

Sounds about right for this build.

Tongue firmly in cheek.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Got home and my neighbour where George the cat actually lives, delivered a parcel.

@pedalcarjoe Ernie had sent me a new, unused auto dimming welding helmet. Thanks mate.

Mickey next door had previously broken one I let him use. No idea how, he is heavy handed.

Ernie also included some very cool stickers.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Today being Friday means weekend, and hopefully some progress.

Kettle is on.

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Well…..

What do they say about the best laid plans and all that?

Corporate work kept me busy in the end, and in the end…. ultimately I popped out for half an hour to fetch a pull wagon chassis for mate @craigrk from Uncle Bob the hoarder.

He had agreed to selling it to Craig for £10.00 what a surprise.

Sally popped in to show me the new doggy acquisition at Uncle Bobs, a rescue from a flat in Maidstone.

Meet Bonnie, I was smitten. Instantly.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

So my total days productivity was condensed in this.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

The bed may be,widened, as will the track, to be used to drag stuff about at his new home.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

The afternoon weather also absolutely sucked, which was just as well, having to deal with a load of corporate Bolloxx and colleagues.

Hopefully tomorrow will be a lot easier to actually get on with stuff and also better weather.

Fingers crossed.

Loads left to be done, made, created, tested and laughed at.

John the lodger took his V-Max trike to a friends house yesterday.

Came back in the afternoon with @craigrk ‘s wheels that will go onto a yet to be built, garden wagon that can be hand towed or behind a garden tractor.

The rims need some bashing, and they do need two hubs.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Being disabled, losing a leg etc certainly does not mean unable or unwilling

Next thing he came down with a 160cc proprietary engine that had been fitted to a kart, and abandoned by its owners.

I had offered £10.00 for it.

Worth a try at that money.

@nickwheeler had his own opinion on it, which may prove to be correct.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

I have stashed it in a dry corner of the carport for now.

Future fodder for the barstool racer.

More Rezin Rockit time today.

Grizz1963 03-13-2022 04:16 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

You know those days…..?

Loads planned, loads done, not much to see….l?

Yes, one of those.

Nick came over by midday.

During the week he had rebuilt the loom into something lighter and more flexible

With its ancillaries

Looks a lot less threatening now.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Scrap from the loom totalled up to 3kg

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

I had spent some time being a nice boyfriend, and then time doing little jobs like cleaning the paint off the chassis where to chassis numbers are punched in, not very clearly.

Spray painted over it in black.

Then made up a complete new plate that will be attached elsewhere too, much more legible.

After that I started working on bringing the heater matrix, box and blower fan together.

Nick carried on with the pedal box, clutch master cylinder relocation, minimal space but got it perfectly fitted. BIG FIDDLY JOB, TRUST ME.

Carrying on with the easy stuff, the heater box needed some thinking too.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Cut, fold, fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Starting to resemble what it will be.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Also made and welded a support and holding bracket inside.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Front strap bracket made using @nickwheeler ‘s Riv-Nut tool.

Absolute magic.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Finally did the last trimming on the blower unit and then bonded the parts together.

John the lodger was on hand to pump out the Soudal Crystal glue/sealant for me.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

The actual holes for the heated air to be directed into the footwells will be made one final fitting of the blower, wiring loom, ECU etc has been decided.

More in a bit.

Coffee.

Grizz1963 03-13-2022 04:53 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

In-between making coffee and doing cosmetic stuff, Nick was beavering away.

First big win was getting the clutch master cylinder into the bulkhead after trimming a bit from the brake system brackets, and the mc base.

Minimal when you look at it, but a ton of work to make it fit and look right.

You can see it fitted in the last photo.

Firewall clearing continues.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

I hope @nickwheeler comes and describes what happened here, he is more capable than me.

Suffice it to say he hoped that this amount of adjustment would save on some fabrication…..

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Errrrrrrrrrmmmmm……?

NOPE !

Buggerrr !!!

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Resulting in the whole assembly coming out once more, and Nick taking it all home to remake.

Similarly for the throttle cable where the beautifully made cable ends needed to be remade possibly 0.5mm bigger holes to fit the cables.

I guess that is the kitcar boogie, two steps forward and three steps back.

I ordered a gearbox shifter boot on Friday, yesterday, less than 24 hrs later……l

DELIVERED.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

LOADS OF LUBE……..

Fitted.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Removing the brake master cylinder and trying to make its rusted, seized parts move, failed.

So now we have another brake system part to find.

But it will potentially see the whole braking system being new and rebuilt.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Eventually we ran out of jobs to do.

John caught Nick and I sitting going through next jobs and tasks.

@pedalcarjoe Ernie likes a happy photo.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Closing shop at 18.30 felt early, but was a good time.

A rubbish night, netting me 4 hours sleep in total, sucks.

Also hoping to take delivery later of Sally’s new fence panels after the storms destroyed some.

Thanks for checking in.

Breakfast next.

Grizz1963 03-14-2022 12:55 PM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

What a day.

Guess that’s what a day job is about.

In between meetings, clients etc, I also raced around doing about 55 miles to go get stuff in various places and dealing with a hysterical friend whose best friend (long term cardiac issues) was found dead at home yesterday.

Anyway…….

Back to Sunday.

I started earlier than usual, more brackets, fine tuning and fitting for the heater blower done.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Also made a clever little spring loaded seat for the fan unit to sit on, along with that bracket.

Then a small tab for the front end as the exits still need to be decided and planned, then cut and fitted once the dash is built.

Around lunch time @nickwheeler got here after spending the morning in Rochester Cathedral.

He brought gifts….. made these overnight, clevis, lengthened clutch actuator and some squirty things…..

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

For the screen washer, new Cortina items (I think)

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Also brought this tool.

I had never seen or used one.

But I needed it as I had managed to create a use for it.

Spectacularly tactile and a true lifesaver.

Nick was telling me (I forget the make) he had bought it to work on a Russian airplane and his them boss was blown away seeing him extricate himself from a wing structure to report that he had repaired a load of faults, using it.

10 virtual beers for the guy who identifies what it is and used for.

It fixed my problem in less than 5 minutes while Nick was making up a braided hydraulic line.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

While I carried on with other jobs, Nick sorted out the brake and clutch pedals and assembly.

The recessed tray for the blower in the transmission tunnel was sealed and bolted in, blower set up to allow for spacial planning.

Also edited the gear stick hole a bit more.

It still needs a gaiter to either be made up, or even an existing one to be edited to fit.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

More in a bit.

About the proverbial hitting the fan, thanks to Karma.

Grizz1963 03-15-2022 03:36 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

So the thread file was used to tidy up the gear shifter thread, as I had managed to damage it slightly when removing a very tight collar from in and miscalculated my hammer angle.

Fixed now.

Right……

Back to Sunday and the Kitcar Boogie.

You know the one, two steps forward and three steps back.

It had become time to fit and fix the windscreen frame so that ECU,,relays, fuses and wiring loom can be fitted and fixed, as well as heater pipes, controls and then the firewall plate and its embellishments.

But Karma had other plans.

When @nickwheeler had done the pedalbox, actuators etc, it all went together relatively easily, as if he had been dealt a bonus card.

So I cut and prepped the bolts that became the studs to be welded into the Land Rover screen that @glenanderson had donated to the build.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

I drilled the holes for a tight fit, cleared all the galvanising away for welding, magnet placed and then Nick tacked them all.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Trial fitting the 5 studs showed one hole needed a 3mm sideways elongation.

No problem, I did that while Nick welded up the studs.

Perfect.

Errrrrmmmmmmm…. Nope. FAIL.

Though we did not know it at this point.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

So next step was get the Nyloc nuts in there and tighten it down with a high density foam sealing strip.

HA HA HA HA HAHAHA.

When we assembled the support, I will take the blame here, the angle was welded in the wrong way around, and despite drilling, noticing it all, I had forgotten.

Look closely at my KING SIZED COCK-UP.

Can you see the problem yet?

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Yes, no way a nut and socket will be going in there.

Space is tight, very tight.

So a variety of options were considered, including a tungsten carbide bit to whittle away 25mm of each holes obstruction.

In the end I drove to Aghabridge and saw this display when I got there.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Explaining my dilemma through the medium of a few photos, Karma smiled and an engineer found me some 15mm pipe with 11mm inner diameter hole, cut me some and sent me on my way.

FOR THE TOTAL PRICE OF FREE.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

From there I went to get some replacement M10 bolts and extras for the firewall work that still has to follow.

Hopefully this will come together on Friday when I have a day vacation.

More to come.

Grizz1963 03-15-2022 04:18 AM

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project

Many of you will realise I am the pretty one in this build.

Nick is the brains.

But rarely, I come up with a goodererer idea.

Case in point, fabricating or making up a switch or valve for the heater to turn it off started out as a complex thing, cables, levers, brackets etc…… you know the drill.

Then I suggested why not just add a simple tap into the mix.

On/Off

£12.00 of the Queens English Pounds vs a load of faffing and fabrication.

Mounted on the side panel under the dash.

Ladies prerogative when feet are freezing.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

While at Car Builder Solutions I saw this Cod-piece.

I need a used one from a scrap car, the one in the donor was completely torn and rotten.

Quite phallic in a dark dungeon kinda way.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Spent £82.00 inmthe end.

Including full, size headlight bowls and chrome trim bezels.

The ones with the cut awy backs are specific for Land Rover Discovery.

Got home and did a bit of assembly.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

Later, after walking Bonnie the dog, Sally popped in to say hello before heading home.

https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds

So I showed her what it looks like, have to say it works for me.

Because there was no Sally for dinner, I managed to stay down there till 8.45 doing some little cleaning up jobs.

More about that later.

So where were we.

Cleaning up my act.

Monday evening after work I ended up in the garage because Sally was knackered and had gone straight home after walking the dog.

So I started on some nice, easy win jobs that ultimately need doing.

Cleaning, Flap Wheeling, Scraping, Masking, HEATING And Painting a few pieces

Clutch MC and reservoir ready.

Pedal box.

Manky as hell.

Needs new rubbers.

Flap wheeled.

Better.

Dirty Big Donut.

Much happier with them all uniformly painted.

Have also ordered a £64.00 new Brake MC to fit.

Heating each part before painting when it is 7’C outside meant slower going, but it beats sitting around indoors.

Came in after this lot.

Happy so far.

Remember these bonnet/hood latches that were seized up and rusted away.

Well, thought I would try open them, if they broke….. hey, meant to be, if not…. Money saved.

I really like their design and they suit the car.

Bench vice, spanner…….

Cleaned up the steel bits with a small “Knotwheel of Truth” @pauly ©️ and painted.

Used some Autosol to try polish up the handles a bit.

Not great, but improved.

Halfords wheel silver paint.

Hook tab shows condition before when removed from the bonnet/hood.

AND REASSEMBLED

Saving myself a bit of cash, plus I could not find new ones in the usual places.

Cleaning stuff is certainly therapeutic as they are small wins that take time and makes a difference.

So the screen, or is that scream?

Removed the studs.

Bought longer units, cut some spacers.

Tried them, should be fine.

Then decided @nickwheeler would love this look.

Done.

And yes, no paint where the new studs will be welded up.

While I was on the cleaning up run, I decided to buy a nice new, working brake master cylinder.

£64.00 delivered..

Hope to rescue to reservoir from the old unit.
