Bummer they don't sell this in Holland, but they do sell in the UK :metal: So we will search (or call Jack Hammer to take one to the Hot Rod Hayride;)) All the sets they sell overhere are with a "modern" switch, I don't like that. And Thanks Lower for pointing out the page!! Inner fender almost ready...welded by Mark?? Is he ever at home??? Doing nothing .....;) |

Hey folks. This is a round about way of saying I have a small update on the rebuild. The left front fender I purchased for repairs, was worse that I had thought, after thinking about the blasting, etc., my son Mark (reaper71) said the metal would be real thin, and questionable for repairs.
So, I called LEEVON in Springfield to see if he had any extra fenders. He didn't, we talked about the swap meet that was being held this past week-end and I might be able to find a fender there. So Mark and I thought we might go. I then decided to call Doug (Advance Design) to see if he had anything. Doug said he had picked up a good pair and would be willing to let me have the left one. Price was discussed and he would check on shipping and get back with me. Next thing I know, Doug called and said he and his wife would bring it to me. They needed to make a road trip, and we had wanted to get together, so it was on. (Note: Doug and I have talked on the phone several times, and we have PM'ed each other countless times over the last year or so). We finally met late Friday. On Saturday, Doug and his beautiful wife Cindy came back to the house. Doug and Cindy are the type of people than when you met them, that it seems you have known each other for years. They also met my son Mark, and looked over some of his projects. The fender Doug brought was great, nice solid piece. So I said here's the money. Doug said it was a gift from them. I said No that isn't right, Cindy explained gift giving and said I had to accept. So I did and I gifted Doug in return. Everyone happy. It is had to put into words, this feeling I have, for this great couple to go out of their way too, not only give me a fender, but drive 5 hours to deliver. God had our paths cross for a reason, so I will wait for my turn. All I can say is, if they call and need anything, I will drop what I'm doing and get there as soon as I can. Doug and Cindy, THANKS for coming into my life. Love you both...Jim Oh yeah, here's a pic. I'm the old goat on the left, then Cindy and Doug. |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
WoW!!!
That's what it's all about, helping each other in every way possible and making friendships!! A five your drive would get me in Paris by the way..... |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Very cool!
I've met a lot of good people because of this forum too |
Re: My 50 roadster pickup build
Very cool story...Doug did text me a pic of your truck as a hint to where he was...I'm glad that you met. Doug and I were both in Columbus OH last year at the same time but our schedules did not allow us to meet up. Someday it will happen.

Ok, this update is showing the two fenders I have. The old rusty one I picked up just north of were I live. Thought it was OK, and it is, it can be repaired and used, but I wanted something a little better. It was 55 here today, but really windy, so I tried standing up fenders, but it didn't work. First 3 pics are different views of the fenders. Pic 4 shows rusted thru holes and many pin holes. Pic 5 shows rear of fender.

Pic 1 After about 10 minutes I had most of the tar and mud loose on the underside of fender.
Pic 2 After some more scraping and the hand held wire brush, it was down to some old paint. Little water and showed the dark green paint. Pic 3 Very nice on the underside. A little electric wire wheel, some blasting in the tight spots and it will be ready for encapsilater, primer, bed liner and paint, boy I'm working fast:devil:. I wish, but will keep you updated...Jim |

Jim, Cindy and I really enjoyed meeting you and Mark! Thank you for your kind words and know we feel the same.
I am glad the fender is going to work out. It was pretty clever how you accepted the gift, then gifted me the money and I had to accept. |

That's so cool, great you guys met and you scored a fender. Meeting people from this form is interesting, we all kind of get to know each other through our posts. I have not been disapointed with the few I have met.

Well, it's been a month and I've got very little done on the fender, etc. Life and its problems. If I don't get my ars going...
Anyhow I did some more cleaning on the backside of fender, and found a few things needing repairs, etc. Mark did all the repair work, welding, etc. So here's a few pics. Pic 1 Fender brace bracket had been cut off, so Mrk made a new one. Pic 2 Welded in place and finished grinding, will drill holes after fitting, etc. Pic 3 This area where two parts come together was rusted away. Pic 4 New piece made up. Pic 5 All welded in place, needs another small weld at point. |

Work continues
Pic 1 Mark used a hard rubber disc to remove paint. Pic 2 another view Pic 3 Mark then used 120 sandpaper on a DA to clean the surface better. He had also used etching material on the deep rust spots. Here he started putting on encapsulator paint to protect the surface. Pic 4 all covered Pic 5 I had started wet sanding with 600 paper to get surface ready for new paint. Hope to get some more time, soon, to finish up the sanding and finish up the back side of the fender. Till next time...Jim |
