Dads suburban looks great on the pics.
Glad you found a nice car and a runner. Your honey hole is an even better find, especially if you plan on doing another truck in future. |

Beauty find! Will have to go over there with you next time I'm in the Okanagan :metal:

It's been too cold to work outside for the past month but today it got quite a bit warmer and up to 5 degrees Celsius so I prepped the front section of the frame for paint and painted it with my favourite rustoleum gloss black. There are a few spots I didn't paint because they still require Welding such as the steering box area and upper shock mounts that still need to be relocated. It turned out pretty good, definitely looks better. Now I can finally install and bolt in the crossmember for the very final time

Also painted and detailed the firewall paint line and painted the Bellhousing crossmember and the underside of the tunnel. The green and black sure look good together

Yesterday I went with my dad to my favourite little goldmine and picked up a bunch of parts, my dad got a really nice 67-68 slope nose hood with the trim and all the letters, a set of really nice suburban barn doors to replace his rusty ones, two partly damaged 67-68 Chevy grilles to weld together to make one good grille plus the aluminum trim and Chrome headlight bezels. He only paid $300 for all of this. Here is the grille I just finished welding together (the wood is just screwed in to help with alignment)

And I pulled this chrome mirror from a 61 cab for my truck as the cast part is broken on mine

And I also pulled this radio delete plate from a 64-66 gmc 4x4, I only gave $10 for the mirror and radio plate

And then today I made some spacers to go between the crossmember and the bottom of the frame (since 60-62 frames aren't as tall there's a gap) and then bolted in the crossmember for good, it's not coming out again. So the next step is to bolt on the lower control arms, install the springs and spindles so I can put the wheels back on and set the truck back on the ground, and then attach the motor mount perch onto the crossmember and then install the engine for good.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Nice Junkyard finds.
I see you cut out that section of frame to install your ps box. Will you be welding that section back in, or do have some other idea? |

So, will you then use longer bolts through the full width of the frame channel?

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Nice parts day you guys had. Good to see you can still find trucks like ours in yards.

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Hey Nik, that was some good finds in the salvage yard!
I've been enjoying your build and gotta say I was really impressed when I figured out you are doing most of your work outside. Wow! Your dedication is awesome. |
Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Nik. You are a hustler and your build is fun to watch come along. You got ambition for sure.Use what you learn and pass on the teaching's in the future.

Things have been slow lately because of weather like this, but this evening I went outside and braved the cold to get some work done |

I got the control arms, spindles and brakes installed on both sides, the springs will go in at a later date when I can get access to a spring compressor.

Then I loosely bolted up all the steering linkage and clamped the idler arm to the frame just to get an idea of how well everything is going to line up.

Everything is lining up great, there is just the right amount of clearance between the centre link and crossmember, about 1/4" or so. Next step is to clean up and paint the steering linkage, then finish welding up the frame where the steering box mounts

Re: A 15 year old's project. Rusty 62 stepside
Wow, and I saw a post a guy was complaining his shop was 40f....gutsy progress!
