Just go to the build section and start a new build thread! Pictures of everything you do is a necessity if you want advice.

Unfortunately I see that sort of work around here all to often. The sad part is that those are the guys that are making more money than I do, doing quality work.

Only two of the welds along the top were even hitting the inner rocker. The ones along the bottom weren't much better.

I managed to get the Rh door jamb stripped and prep for paint somewhat done, after several pounds of rusty metal was replaced its good to be on this stage of the repairs, plan for tomorrow is to get the other side done and then shoot color on the jambs and the windshield area and get the glass back in next week, but....thats been the plan for about 2 months now!

This weekend has been pretty busy, Saturday I got a different cab for my project I started working on that the same day. Sunday got kind of early 6 ish cleanned up my garage and around 830 I headed to pick up my engine from a guy I had met a few months back. Its a 350 w a trans I forgot which one. I got it for 150.00. Sunday when I got back I started into the engine has you can see by the pics. My plans are to clean it paint it possibly have a vavle job done, I will replace the oil pump, gas pump, lifters, push rods, cam to at least a rv cam or maybe bigger any suggestions?, timimg chain and chrome goodies. Im thinking of a real strong drive train. and go the old school look. any thoughts would be great Thanks Jeff in indy:sumo:

Holy Cow... 33 gallons! Is that a single tank or do you have multiples?

I spent some quality time in the shop today. Dissasembled and stripped the paint off of the '76 Blazer console that's going into my '65.

I was surprised at how well these are built. I am waiting I amke some mounting brackets before I repaint it.

More data related to the tear down in my build thread.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

I put the truck up on stands and all the wheels off. I am taking the rear wheel hubs into powder coat gloss black along with the new seat rails from the seat I was able to find. I got the interior defrost hoses installed on the heater. I picked up all the new brake shoes and tubing for the brakes and the tubing for transmission cooling. It is starting to look more and more like it will actually get done.

I managed to start cleaning up my control arms, I sprayed them with POR-15 Marine Clean. That stuff does a good job!! I then found some nooks and crannies that I had missed when I was scuffing them a w/Scotchbrite. I also worked on cleaning the area where the control arms attach. Soon I'll have everything ready for the POR-15(I work slow)

I fabricated brackets to mate a '76 Blazer console to the floor pan of my '65. Basically just used 3/16 x 1 flat bar and bent it to raise the console and to fit the slope of the floor. Then drilled holes in the bars to bolt the brackets to the console and floor.

Would flipping that crossmember alleviate some of the trailing arm issues that come with lowering the rear end?

63sbssbbw 08-07-2010 06:03 AM

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

Yes,although once flipped the top (the old bottom)needs a bit of modifying to clear the cab.

probably nothing a little grinder couldn't fix though, maybe a little cut and weld kind of thing...

Please explain how flipping the crossmember helps on a lowered truck. Is this something that is beneficial on a static drop?

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

In the factory setup the pinion angle of the rear end is established (along with the axle perches) by the mounting orientation of the forward and rear ends of the trailing arms. By raising the rear axle up in the chassis (lowering the truck) the pinion is now pointing nose down aggravating the driveshaft angles. By inverting the position of the forward trailing arm brackets, the trailing arms are now restored to their factory alignment (assuming the rear axle and the forward trailing arm pivots are raised the same amount.

SCOTI 08-07-2010 09:31 PM

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

^^ The easier way would be to remove the OE trailing arm mounts from the c.member & invert them if the pinion angle is all your looking to change.

If you want more clearance & better pinion angle, yank the c.member, flip it, flatten the bottom of the c.member so it's flush w/the frame rail, & raise the top of the c.member 'loop' to gain some much needed d.shaft clearance.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

After 20 years on the rear shocks and 13 on the fronts, I finally installed new Gabriel gas shocks front and rear. The old front Monroe Gas Grande shocks remain so stiff it takes quite a while to compress them by hand. The new versions are soft by comparison with about the same resistance as the rears. They look wimpy compared to the old ones, and I was a bit concerned about their ability to handle the suspension. A quick test ride revealed greatly improved ride quality. The truck used to pound into rough roads and now seems to glide over rough patches (of which we have a lot). There doesn't seem to be any noticeable loss of cornering ability, so at the moment I'm happy with the change.

Re: What did you do to your truck today?

After spending all day, night, and following morning at the Hot August Nights show in Reno over the weekend, I got a lot of the junk cleared out of my shop. We had been piling stuff out there for the past few weeks because of the few house parties and bbqs we've been having. So I spent most of Sunday evening and today before work getting it mostly sorted and cleared out to more proper locations. Gotta make the room for the cab and bed that will be soon coming off. Not much specifically on the truck itself, just getting tools cleaned and ready, and making more room. Found quite a bit to sell on craigslist too, nothing 60-66 related though.
