Yes it is!

Okay, some more progress. I got the trans mount installed and welded the tabs on the cross member for it. This is the first time since I ripped this truck apart that it has had a trans cross member and mount bolted in it!

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...626_134459.jpg

Nick made great progress on the core support. Gussets are welded on and the intercooler clears the hood latch now! Tomorrow he'll finish the lower intercooler mounts and bolt the upper portion to the support.

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...626_134426.jpg

I removed the rear end from the chassis so I could finish welding everything up on the rear axle. I only have 2 more welds to complete on one air bag mount, and I have to make some boxing plates for my panhard bracket and weld them on, and then the rear end is done. I have to finish my upper panhard bracket, weld some holes on the bottom of the frame, extend the frame at the back so the bed has a place to rest evenly, and then clean up some welds, and paint the frame. Getting closer.....

This is a great build. I read this thread on and off for awhile now but found myself re-reading the whole thing again. I can't wait to see more!
The orange looks great. I really wish you could find 67~72 body's that clean around here. Keep it up!

I have to lengthen the LH CAC pipe now that we moved the IC farther down. Maybe I'll get lucky and the silicone hose I use will make up for it. We shall see.

Thanks. This truck has transformed to a complete new truck, and I've had 2 different manuals, an auto, and this is the third engine. Haha The body was pretty rough when I first got it. There are only 2 panels original to this truck, and that would be the doors.

So far I had to lengthen the driver side pipe 3.5" since that's how far I dropped the CAC to clear the hood latch assy.

Today I cut the rest of my small pieces I needed and ground them and fit them. Then I welded them all up. I finished the 2 pieces on the rear end as well. I have 4 pieces I'd like to add to the frame and then I have to finish welding some holes up on the bottom rail, and it'll be time to clean up all the welds and stuff.

Nick made the lower intercooler mounts last night and installed the intercooler this morning. He then cut the LH pipe and started fitting a new piece in there. Tomorrow we'll finish it up.

Thanks. Yeah, I should have built a different support, but no time for that right now.

We got the frame painted. This was the first time I've used the POR-15 chassis paint, and I'm not real pleased. The gloss black por-15 lays down a lot nicer than this. We'll have to second coat this later. We cleaned up welds and sanded/cleaned the frame and rear axle.

Ya got to love it when they start to look loke trucks again . once they make noise then you really get stoked . Truck looks awsome . You have come so far ! Running well ? I'm no fan of POR 15 my self. I hear of lots of people that swear by it but I ask my self if they really put some mi on it after . I used it on my hwy tractor after giving the frame a quick touch with the blaster . I actually drove it and put 100,000 mi on it and the paint was done in 6 ish months . No match for a Ontario winter I have spots on the truck that were done with trimclad yars before and they are still holding up better than that stuff .

brimc 07-01-2013 04:38 PM

Re: Finally starting my Longhorn 4x4 conversion

That frame looks good in the pictures. I do agree with you on the POR top coats. It does not lay down like the rust paint. Next time you use it, or if you do another coat you could try this....
I set the paint can in hot water for a bit before I was ready to brush it. The heat made the paint "thinner" and it flowed much better with "less" brush marks. If you don't want to use the can you can pour small amount into a cup and try.
Truck looks and "sounds" great. Keep the updates coming!

Lower heat and slowed down the wire speed and take our time.

Re: Finally starting my Longhorn 4x4 conversion

Thanks guys. Yep, for now it's getting a stack until I can come up with a good way to get at least 4" exhaust through the back. A stack is the least bit of work right now. Plus I like stacks. I didn't want one on this truck, but I really want to be able to dump my rear suspension for hooking up to trailers. That's a nice feature. My only other option was to dump the exhaust in front of the rear axle, and I felt that looked dumb and it will have my rear axle black...................

I forgot about all the stuff you've got to get around in the back. I'm gonna run 4" back to the front of the rear axle, and then split to duel 3" out the back. I don't care for the huge coffee can tips that some guys have. And I want people to be really confused when they see my truck roll by.

Thanks! You can see it in the RH corner of this pic below. There was one hole in the fire wall from the factory, and I still need to add one and finish mounting it.

Yeah, I think a 5" tip on a 4" system, and a 6" tip on a 5" system looks good. Anything bigger and it looks dumb. On stacks, it definitely has to fit the truck.

Here is a pic of the suspension aired up.

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...701_121010.jpg

Aired out

http://i181.photobucket.com/albums/x...702_112202.jpg

I wanted to put the tail pipe over the pan hard bar on the RH side. This was a good idea until I aired it out. Not going to work. So then I thought about putting it over the LH side of the pan hard bar and t it to duals. My issue with that is that I think all the 90's and 45's will restrict flow. It'll have to wait for now.

Any chance of running it down the outside of the frame, and over the top of the air bag on the right hand side?

if you give me time, i will find out. i am going to try to avoid a stack, so i am going to try that route. i think i can get it weaseled through the wheel well in a way that wont hurt my feelings. if not, 4" stack.

I was thinking the same thing. Or run it on the outside of the frame and dump it in front of the right, rear tire if you don't want to go over the bag bracket.

My problem in doing this is my primary turbo is so low that getting over the frame is nearly impossible due to the cab floor board. When I put the turbos on, I had no intentions of going with this air ride set up. Whoops, another change in plans.

I'm sure you can get it through there with where you put your primary.

Rectangle tubing doesn't flow nearly the same as round.

I don't want it dumping in front of the rear anything. Everything will be black if I drive it like I stole it. Which may make me feel better for it being such a PITA going back together.

sorry meant two round pipes of 2.5 "
i seen y pipes for sale that go from 4 to 2 x 2.5 inch , you could run those down both sides of the frame with a lot more clearance

Well, it's been a long few weeks. We did manage to get the truck down to Good Guys for 2 days so people could perform double takes. I had a few people join me in the thrash fest to get it ready. Thanks to my Dad, brothers nick and Scott, and to Mattman2010. They all helped do something so the truck would get put back together fast. It is really nice to jump in this thing after all this time and drive it under it's own power. There is still a lot left to be done to drive it, and IDK when it all will get done. We shall see. Here are some pics and I will add more as I resize them.
