here's a grave marker i found in a little cemetery,in Lockhartville,Nova Scotia, for Ben Jackson,a man born in the area, went and fought in the civil war as a substitute for another man,Lewis Saunders.when i looked into who Ben Jackson was,it said, individuals who were drafted, could pay someone to take their place, evidently that's what Ben Jackson did and served on the U.S.S Richmond as Captain of the #10 gun crew.during the battle of Mobile Bay in 1864,Jackson retrieved a grenade tossed on deck, threw it overboard before it exploded.the story goes on to say,the bay was littered with torpedoes(mines) and Jackson was successful in disarming several but one exploded, injuring him.he recovered in hospital, was awarded the Civil War Campaign Medal,a pension and was discharged june 2 1865.he returned to Nova Scotia, went back to farming and eventually returned to sea on commercial vessels.died August 20,1915 and laid to rest in an unmarked grave.in 2010,at a ceremony attended by 400 people including folks dressed like Civil War soldiers,a grave marker was erected in his memory.

This is how I know spring is coming. They are the first thing to come up every year, right at the base of the steps to my front porch.

Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
You still have it? That's really cool. There are surprisingly few things I still have from that far back. The Craftsman tool box from the thread about them a few weeks ago comes to mind. My machinist tools/box from High School is from the same time period, but that's about it?
Oh, I do still have a commemorative Apollo 11 drinking glass that was a give-away from a gas station, before I could drive. Somehow that survived all of the moves? I'll probably remember something so common that I'm not thinking of it right now. |
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
Yeah its weird I have something from back then, considering Im 61 now.
I saved a lot of my sons things from when they were young, one will be 40 this year and the other will be 39. They have just shy of zero interest in most of the stuff lol. |

I snapped a shot of this. My beautiful daughter sent me this cigarette lighter. I guess she knows her old mans taste... Morbid.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/gallery/.../Lighter_2.jpg My fingers look fat in that pic. And they aren't. I'm really skinny.Which is odd because my family is a bit on the chubby side. But I've always been skinny as a rail. I can't gain weight. |

How many boxes of these do you have to eat before they actually make you thin? ... 'Cause I bought about two cases so far... from four different Girlscouts. :ito:

I've bought cases of them myself. Never put on a pound. Maybe a couple of pounds but I needed to. When my weight dipped into the 120's my doctor told me to gain weight. I looked like I was in a concentration camp. It must be my metabolism. My body burns off weight faster than I can eat. |

I bought the Factory Five assembly manual when I retired in 1998 and still have it, it was $50 at that time.. This came into the mix and won out..... I'm not sure if the assembly manual is even usable now. LockDoc |
Re: Random Photos ‘You took’
I was looking at the Factory Five car kits. One thing that helped tip the scales to new floors was that California will only allow 500 kits a year to be registered new. I think I got that right. So, if you didn't get yours registered the first day that the DMV is open in a new year, you have to wait. I was working in Florida at the time, maybe I could have registered it there and then brought it into the state, but that may have not worked either.

And we all know how much California likes to take more money. That's a beautiful Skyliner Leon. Maybe you can answer a question for me. It might be an old wives tale but I've heard that if the roof on a Skyliner gets stuck when it's down position that you cant get to the mechanism to get it to go back up because it's stuck under the roof. It's like that on my Porsche. If the battery goes dead. The battery is under the front hood or trunk or whatever you want to call it. It's controlled by an electronic switch to open it. No battery=no switch. And no backup. (ask me how I know) I had to hook a battery charger to the fuse box to pop the trunk to get to the battery. It's a terrible design. :smoke: |
