Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Just ordered up the all the bed sills... Also waiting to hear on some six lug Chevy wheels that I learned about from a friend. Someone is apparently ready to let 'em all go for 50 bucks! Piece by piece, we're gonna get this thing done... Only 18 days until Spring!

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Wiring, lots of driving around to get extra connectors, wire etc. Pulled the back harness and found the gas tank sender wire is too short, so I called it a night. Also noticed master cylinder number two is weeping a little, I am going to continue pumping it and hope it seals up when I get it running and some heat to the unit. I am not going to replace it until I get this on the road.

Installed a NO LIMIT cowl vent panel replacement without the louvers. It is crazy cool for those of us who aren't going to use the vents anyway. I discovered the product while reading this forum and there was a question about whether wipers would work or not. They work very well all you have to do is locate and drill the holes. Everything else is there. It took a little tuning on the fiberglass around the short side edges to match my body lines and I had to drill the front mounting holes + plus the wiper arm holes. Installed and removed about 6 times to get it properly fit, about 3 hours and it's slick for those of you considering the mod. Now for paint.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
I finally did SOMETHING on my truck today!
Been wanting to use her as a weekend driver and since Daylight Savings Time stated today I figured it was a good day to begin. I'd already pulled the cross panel in front of the radiator & latch assembly. I could see the grill & apron below were very dirty and had lots of surface rust. Pulled the whole front off: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psab6135bf.jpg The grill is in good overall condition: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psc9e636ad.jpg Backside has "light" surface rust considering its never been off there for 58 years! http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psc9e636ad.jpg I'm debating using either naval jelly OR Ospho on this backside. I COULD use my El Cheapo Craftsman siphon sandblaster if I stay back so as not to warp it. Opinions? http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psfe5fba45.jpg |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Sorry for the double grill photo. Didn't edit it fast enough and now it won't let me.

So I came down with a case of anal glaucoma today (I couldn't see my ass going to work!) took the day off to do a little more work today. I hit OSH and Home Depot early for Rustoleum Rust Reformer, some naval jelly and some Ospho - or whatever HD calls theirs. Here's how it went....so far! Backside of front bumper: Crusty rust & old chrome bubbling loose in places: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps671cf519.jpg Following directions I diluted Ospho 3:1 and sprayed one side. Full strength by brush on other side. Kept it wet for HOURS - not much happened. After 8 hours my impatient ass was tired of waiting (Yes Virginia, I know you're supposed to wait 24hrs.) I washed it off, dried & used a 3M wheel to remove the remaining rust and loose flaky chrome. Came out decent: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps55791eae.jpg In the center (above) you can KINDA see where the Ospho pooled so it stayed submerged/worked best. I bet it would work great if you get $100 worth (riiight) to submerge a big part in a kiddie pool. After, I sprayed it with the Reformer and up close it came out quite smooth given where it started: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psf0b25f4e.jpg Hit it with the Rust Reformer - Don't flame me, I like that stuff. I don't know if it's just black spray paint and I'm fooling myself, but I'm going willingly! |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Oh and P.S. I also used the 3M wheel to strip the front side of the grill under-apron. I wire brushed the backside (sorry, forgot to take a pic) and sprayed it AND the grill with the Rust Reformer. Label says you've gotta wait 24hrs (grrrr...) to top coat. Pics of THAT hopefully tomorrow.
Stripped but Reformer on the mounts where the 3M wheel couldn't reach. I DID spend a while to scrape the loosest rust off with a flat screwdriver. Best I could do. BEFORE: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps753e0f6b.jpg AFTER: http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psfaa48e85.jpg |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Opinions? http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...psfe5fba45.jpg[/quote] for what it will cost you in time and materials, plus getting it media blasted and painted you can buy a new chrome one. Just be sure to paint the back side with a sealer coat, as it will rust eventually too. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1955-1956-55...f0f9a4&vxp=mtr |
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
After two years, i finally installed the new clutch in my truck.. Now to work on getting it running.
|
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
continued working on one of my rear fenders. Welded a new piece in the flange that bolts to the box side. Been putting in overtime so only have a few hrs here and there to tinker.
|
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
oldcouple - I'm pretty sure that's a Chinese grille and I've heard differing opinions on whether they fit properly or not. I WILL have a chrome grille someday but for the present I'm just trying to get my truck to a clean, reliable weekend driver. THEN later I will likely blow it all apart and do high end paint and chrome.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Got as far as I could with the under hood/headlight wiring. On to the dash...
|
Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Finished headlight and engine wiring except for turnsignals (need to dig out the turnsignal grille). Got all the dash done except for a couple of minor things. On to the back, but need to fab a bumper infill piece first.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Finished the rear driver fender mounting flange and started pounding out the small dents here and there.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?
Yesterday I took a drive on the back country roads down in Missouri. I had just rolled it out of the shop for the first time since November's snow hit.
The plan was to verify the gas tank's range and enjoy the nice heater on a cloudy cold day. It ran dry 3-miles from the gas station, which is another 3-miles from home. Now I know. |
