Here's a load of 68's (I think).

Re: GM Semis
I think you are correct. Nice picture, like a dream. I wonder if the rear HandiVan is a camper order. Is that a pinstripe on the red truck or a reflection?

Re: GM Semis
WOW, that GMC tractor is a home run, that's a rare picture. Fine some more.

Re: GM Semis
Find more???Most of the car carriers you see on the web originated on my Flickr page. That includes the ATC GMC seen above. Here's a better view of that Insured rig.

Re: GM Semis
More great pictures.
That Red GMC Conventional is an interesting shot. Looks like it is only a 5000 though. Probably has a 351 or 401. |
Re: GM Semis
Here's another "Truckaway" load, this time I think 67's.

Re: GM Semis
I believe you are right.
Also the Tractor itself is only a '66 or '67. The emblem on the hood is a little hard to see, but it looks like it's a V-6 Gas or a Toro-Flow. |

These Carhauler Pics are awesome. You get lots of Bang for your buck with the full loads and all. Thanks...

Re: GM Semis
About two months ago I uploaded about twenty photos of 47-54 Chev and GMC car carriers. I show some here but before I do,,,,here's a 36 or 37 Montpelier cab Chevy and semi enclosed W&K trailer. The same cabs were also used on Dodges before they made a COE in-house.

Re: GM Semis
Its kind of wild to see that C 60 behind the cracker box.

Re: GM Semis
They did it several times a day. This is a Williams trailer and the uprights for the rear upper deck are hinged at the bottom. When unlatched, they tilt out to about 30 deg. The decks above the big truck are raised and the truck is driven in. On earlier versions of these trailers, all the upper decks swung out. I dig one up and post it. Meanwhile, here's a sister truck with the cab and chassis units loaded on the tail.

I'm glad you have dug up so many pictures to share on the internet.

Re: GM Semis
That load of Valiants is one of my images. Note the trailer is stenciled "Road". This was a highway trailer extended at the front and modified from 4 to 6 cars. Clark also had a fleet of 4-car trailers dedicated to rail use. Piggy-backing started in 59 and Clark was one of the first carriers to cooperate with the rails.

Re: GM Semis
It probably depended on the contract, but I have noticed that the tractor usually matches the brand of cars. In this case, it would usually be a Dodge hauling those Plymouths.
It must have been a little funny when a Chevy pulled up to a Chrysler-Plymouth Dealership, lol. |
Re: GM Semis
In the 1950's Cadillac in Detroit would not allow a non-GM truck on the property. Western Auto Transports was hauling them from Detroit to the W coast. They took a GM tractor to load out and drove to Jackson, MI where they switched tractors, usually a WC White or O/O with Diesel. Convoy, in Portland bought equipment based on the volume of business they did with each manufacturer. Like UPS, they removed most of the emblems as to not offend anyone. Clark Trans, in this photo hauled Chrysler and GM and mixed the loads. Howard Sober hauled Oldsmobiles and REO, White and IH trucks. His fleet was 98 percent GM with maybe two or three REO's, White 3000s, IHs and at least one Diamond REO.

Re: GM Semis
M&G Convoy was one of Chryslers major haulers and used Dodges until 75 when Chrysler quit making HD's. They began buying GMs in 76 or 77 and their O/Os eventually followed suit. This was Elwood Taylor's Chevy 90. He was a 'Broker" (O/O) in Newark, DE.

Re: GM Semis
I notice that "Chevrolet" is covered up on that one, like you have mentioned. Even see 2 holes on the side of the hood where the emblem once was. Only they weren't kidding everyone, lol.
|
Re: GM Semis
Like that on the West Coast too. I remember Convoy Company hauled Mopar's with green and white Dodge's, Pacific Motor Trucking hauled GM products on GMC's and Chevy's (PST was part of Southern Pacific Railroad, and SP handled all the GM plants in CA too), Ford's were hauled by an outfit named Hadley, you guessed it, on Ford trucks.

And pacarhauler made it even better. |
Re: GM Semis
That is just plain cool

Re: GM Semis
That truck MUST be restored! At first I thought the grill was missing, but the vintage pic kinda shows it's not!
Anybody know what kind of engine/trans it wold have? |
Re: GM Semis
There's an interior shot that shows two big sticks and I would guess a GM 71-series of some type?

Re: GM Semis
Depending on the year, a 4-71 of 150 or160 HP. The grille was already missing forty years ago. There are more pics of trucks in this fleet on my Flickr pages. The last ATC trucks (Freightliners) were still running a few years ago now lettered for Hansen and Atkins. The Hansen family owned ATC.

Re: GM Semis
All of these are amazing. car haulers and the semis don't pop up much for sale do they? More of a stumble upon them deal?

I immediately knew that had to be Grapevine territory even before I saw your caption. Those rolling hills/mountains and the oak trees. Great shot thanks for posting.

Here's a Chevy at the same location.

Re: GM Semis
Chevy "B" Series are pretty rare.
Would like to see a shot of that Side Emblem, but I would say that it is an 80. Looks like a '64 Model anyway. |
