Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
After work I thought I would go mock up the roll bar in order to calculate the rear braces.
Then realised that the seats need to be in to get the spacing and angles right, and that would result in the braces and top support being in tje right position. Bloody hell, it took forever to get all the bolts n nuts fitted and fixed down. I also added the second lap strap on the drivers side to the seat, bolting it to the original seatbelt mount. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Once the seats were in, and tested, and passed on QC, the next was to add in the CAD piece behind the eat. Followed by the rear brace which mounts at the same level as the shoulder harness mounting brace. I wanted them to be as unobtrusive as possible. Success. It then mounts int the chassis through the rear chassis mounting plates. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds If I manage to get the pipe bends right, this could work OK. Next will be making up a CAD profiles for the braces. Fingers crossed of course. |

I enjoyed the walking tour. Hard to believe all that is within walking distance of where you live, or maybe where Sally lives? Whatever the case, on foot. Nice tour. Looks like the roll bar is shaping up well.

Thank you for the reply. The place we went to walk is 4 miles from my home, and 6 1/4 miles from Sally’s place. So certainly within walking distance. It is all about giving the dog more range. I do hope the rollbar comes out well. George, the cat I don’t have, seems to have settled in here. His owner is pregnant with No2 and it seems he prefers sleeping here most days. Easy pet ownership in a way. He comes, he eats (I leave some dry food in a plate for him to graze from and give him the odd bit of chicken or ham, yes he trained me well) he sleeps, he leaves. Just bent a pair of braces before coffee and toast with Sally this morning.
Cross brace cutting next, then make it all fit by cutting the curved shapes where they all join, grind back all the galvanising so I can stick weld them together and tack onto the base plates after I make the rear base mounting plates plates and weld in a pair of captive bolts so they all can slip fit together and be bolted down in one, once full welded up. . https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Fingers crossed. |

Long day.
Made the rear chassis mounting plates for the supports. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Then made some “fish mouth” or whatever you call them, joins. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Mocked up. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Chassis mounting plates welded on the braces. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Mounted in the cab, roll hoop in place, on its base plates…… For the anal amongst us, zoom in, knock yourself out. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Carrying on, later, around 5.00pm John the lodger joined me, both to help and give advice. Roll bar looks very tidy. I'm noticing the primary colors on the material. Is there a a playground nearby that is now missing part of its equipment? Or a schoolyard that's a little emptier than it used to be, haha?

Sunday morning a few yard jobs etc.
No bootfair as I was awake from 3.15 to 5.00 and then snoozed to 07.00 Then onto a bit more tidying up on the welds, which had actually gone really well, with deep penetration. Hammerite https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Mickey was around for an hour or so too. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Before lunchtime, an unusual treat for me, I rarely drink beer. Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Bit of a hectic day.
Fitted at 07.30 this morning with Mickey’s help lifting it in. Had to use a small hydraulic bottle jack to push the front feet open about 15mm that the heat distortion had created. Bolted down. Pretty (very) happy with the overall look. Closer to my visualisation than I deserve. Most importantly was getting it to lean back to mimic the “B-post on the entrance/door. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Rear supports hardly impair load area. So some practicality retained. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Unobtrusive from the front. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds This is a great point to have made it to in my opinion from where it started. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...SizeRender.jpg How much further before the final straight?? . |

So last night I went out in the truck to the 6 Bells pub in Cliffe for a car meeting.
A load of very different stuff, older, newer, traditional, not so traditional….. Noisy Harleys ridden by crippled geriatrics trying to grasp that last handful of youthful pleasure. And making me look the other way while they rev up their overly loud, expensive steeds, tottering about trying to park them for all to admire. Thanks to @peteh1969 for making up the badges.
Fitted them early on today. Details. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Followed by………. Passenger “Anti-Submarine” strap. So…….. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Measured and cut a new 3mm steel brace. Also made a new buckle to go with it. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Bolted in. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And fitted. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Fits too. Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
So while I carried on with the second seat harness mount, @nickwheeler took a look at the wipers that came last week.
Very quickly realising they would be needing some adjustment on every level. 1. Mounting plate and Rivnuts to the frame. 2. Shorter arms, a lot shorter (think headlight arms) 3. Shorter wipers. 8” or 200mm as those supplied are 300mm So we carried on working side by side at more of these small necessary jobs. First mounting plate made up. Even the small screws needed replacing from the magic tub with slightly longer ones. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Tried out. Looks good. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Yes, that works. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Bolted up, spacing works. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Both sides done. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Another couple of small jobs included getting the passenger footwell firewall kickplate carpeted. Looking plush in there now. And finding where I had hidden these bonnet/hood catches…… Making up some backing plates and finding small nuts and screws to attach them to fenders and hood. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Attached. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And finally, stepping away Wipers and arms too long, need something shorter. Bonnet catches in place. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds A short day unfortunately, as the rear light units were not delivered on Friday or Saturday as promised by Ebay. Busy week ahead. Have a good one all. |

Just some random thinking tonight.
Sometimes I should not be permitted to think. Rollbar. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Add scaffolding pipe lagging Wrap in nylon webbing. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Or wrap in vinyl. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Not sure at all yet. Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Rear light units came today.
Took longer than anticipated, but all good. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds So after work I went down to make up some splash guards for them. Measured, cut and folded. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Bottoms folded up. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Fits the hole. Thats a good thing too. John the lodger got home and came down with a beer. This aids the thinking processes. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And wraps around the lights nicely. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Added some insulation to the rear where the contacts may make contact. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Being a bit more adventurous than me, he started to test the lights, wiring, switches etc. Battery is almost dead, so it was a struggle, but except for the rear foglight, all the rear lights are wired, and the new lights are a massive improvement on the old. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Once the shields were done and test fitted, I decided to shut shop and come up. Magic Mike moved the car. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Another small job completed tonight. Headlights, side lights, side repeaters, and a few more bits, plus restoring the wiring……… |
Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Still got questions and opinions on this …..
You get pre-made units that velcro over, foam and a printed nylon type covering. Like these: https://www.rollbarcovers.com/rollbarcovers https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Zippers, velcro and poppers are all feasible though. . I suspect velcro is the easier way. I actually prefer that coarse broad webbing, which is not seatbelt material and it allows you to navigate the bend and absorb the curve neatly. As Phil said, the vinyl can look bit untidy. I always wanted a thicker bar for looks, and the wrapped look achieved that in part. Like this size. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds |
Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Decided that as I had paid for the lot, I may as well destroy it all while at it.
Wipers that is. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Measured, marked,Bent, cut. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Shorter for sure. May have to make some stays to stop the sweeping. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Painted the folded, cut and drilled tips. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Back together. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds I do hope it all comes together sufficiently. Small jobs. |
Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
A day off work always sounds like a great idea.
Especially when you choose to be off. But when you do not, and feel a bit rubbish, it is still a good thing. Right? https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds But there is always stuff to do. Yesterday I checked the cells in the battery that came with the car, intending to put it on charge. Cells were all dry, took 1.5 litres to fill, no wonder it was so light. I hate duff, tired or dead batteries, so time for a new one. John the lodger picked up a new battery on the way home from his favourite battery shop. Cost £55.00 https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds While trying the front wiring, the original airbag (disconnected) steering wheel would not activate the horn, may need some magic or new alternative. https://youtu.be/EThky5GcbH4 But I also looked at alternatives. Eunos wheel. Mot pretty. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Fits but needs a working horn push. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds A spare, fitting centre boss, but no wheel or horn push. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And the wheel I really do prefer for looks. But the centre boss is a differently splined unit. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds So many options……. Do I blend two steering wheels to make up one that fits? Or stick with Mr Ugly. Suspect Ugly it is. For now. |

Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Came to a decision yesterday.
My car, my build, my visualisation, my way, Advice always appreciated. I walked down to the garage just to get out the chair and off the couch. Saw this support, which I really like. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Then thought about it, walked back and fetched the garage keys, got a length of high density foam from the rafters. Added it to the brace. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Then wrapped it in 50mm wide black nylon webbing. Both tidier and arguably “safer” https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds I like the look, as mentioned before. Ordered some fresh new webbing off Evilbay. Both the rear section as done before, and the cross brace will get this treatment. Those who do not like it, I am sure will not be doing their car builds like that. And anyone who really really really hate it that much, come buy the car, take it home and fix it for yourself. Problem solved. |
Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Previously spoke about this.
Contemplating it. Never actioned. Today I was thinking, while indoors, trying to rest with this bloody Covid. Do I add a 500mm drop down front façade below the red panel, to end up just above the level of themgarage door? It will help weather and rain proof the area a bit more when rain comes in hard from the East. I plan on painting it the equivalent of Castrol Green and adding some fake garge signage in Rwd onto it. 10 minute job.

This part of the carport build is 18 months overdue. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds This was where it was headed. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Think an extension of my Sinclair Oil corporation colours, first started on the framework of the carport. Red on Green. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Painting. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Green. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Add some blue and red. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And that was it for tonight, give the Hammerite 24/48 hours to dry. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Next stop, fitting, fixing and signwriting. Or something like that. |

Second coat. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Now to try leave it alone a few days to dry through. Weekend is here. First beer opened. |

Had lunch.
Job done. More to come, but the structural stuff is done for now. There is a “Plan B” for further damage control if needed, but not for now. Started off and stepped back, thinking errrrmmm…… NOPE. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Carried on, redid plate no 3 as it is different and was visibly wrong. Still not sure. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Then did numbers 4, 5 and a short 6 and it looked tatty. Started to add in the red, stabilising structural strip at the bottom….. Feeling better. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And then the second part added made it look a lot better. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Finally added a short strip to the end where it meets the garage gable wall. Tidy enough now. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds A few more visual bits to add and it should look good enough. Also, the daylight is still more than enough in there. What shall I do next then? Tempted to mess with the Rezin Rockit but wiring is just not my thing. |
Re: GRIZZ’s ‘79 - 2WD BLAZER Challenge over in London, England. “~It’s not a Project
Added a bit of detail.
Also did some small jobs like painting all the screws white etc. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds And happy with the result here. Just need to find the red hose for the pump and do a final assembly. Beer time I think. |

So after getting the carport job done I thought a simple job would be to get the contact adhesive out, mask the Rezin Rockit and wrap the centre bar in webbing, as the second 15 meters had been delivered today.
So I dismantled the two safety harnesses and started wrapping the centre bar. 10 meters of webbing as ordered off eBay. Until……… https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds Seriously? 6 meters and then another 4 meter length. I was bloody livid, messaged the seller to ask him to resend a single 10 meter length as ordered. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds I am not even sure under what to file this sort of behaviour. Some time through the day I saw this French registered and built Jeep. I like the look. https://hosting.photobucket.com/imag...080&fit=bounds No roll bar though. Is it dangerous? . |
