i just read this, after everything, i have seriously been wanting to do the swap (even thouht about pulling the ls-1 and 6-speed from the 'hawk :lol: ) but i wasnt up for the challenge of gathering parts and what not, but now?? oh my..the lil lady is gunna give me an earfull :D

You know, first you get a lot of money.... Then you build a big factory and pay all of your workers lots of money......... Then to raise profits you close your factory and send all the work to Mexico. :lol:

Hmmm, I have most of that covered, except the Mexico part. But my guys in the shop here work with an average material thickness of 1/2". I wonder if the even remember how to weld something as thin as header tubes? :haha:

sir, how did you set up both gas tank fuel sending units? I read what fuel pump u used but could not figure out where u placed it? Thanks.

My truck has factory dual tanks, so that solved part of the issue. The other thing about my truck is the PO swapped in a complete TBI setup from an 87, and in doing so replaced every wiring harness throughout the truck with those from the 87.

The 87's, having the TBI, have electric fuel pumps that are in the tank. So all I had to do was replace the pumps with ones capable of supplying the GenIII psi needs.

So whether you have one tank or two, you will need to get sending units from an 87 pickup, and the ACDelco EP381 pump(s). The fuel pumps attach to the sending unit and drop into the tank.

You have two choices on the tanks..... the original tanks will work fine, but they lack the sump that the 87 tanks have. The fuel pump sits in the sump to keep it from losing fuel on hard stops and corners. Your original tank will work, but at or below 1/4 tank, you might find the engine dieing from hard stops or corners.

You've got fuel pumps in the tanks, right? Do both pumps stay running all the time when the key is on or does only the pump for the tank that's selected run? Don't know if this has been asked or not, but I've been thinking about a fuel injection swap in mine and this problem/question has come up in my mind.

hope this works... In case it is hard to see, the lettering on the 6-pin plug that goes into the switching valve is, from left to right on the diagram, F E D C B A. F is not used.

This drawing uses a generic on/off/on type switch. But for the factory switch, the wiring is:

A - Black (Ground)
B - Gray (Right Pump 12v)
C - Tan/Black (12V in to switch, to power pumps)
D - Tan (Left Pump 12v)

Hi Bob;

I know this was an old post, but do you remember if the primer you used was a special engine / high temp primer, or if it was just regular metal primer?? I'm asking because I want to paint my engine but I can't find any high temp primer in the stores and I don't know if it is necessary or not ---- although I would think that it would be important to use if it was available.

That is the same hole I used for the temp sender. The original adapter I bought from S&P was a POS, so a fellow board member made me a couple that are the bomb:

They work great! I had a small leak from the beginning, it seeped between the adapter and the sending unit, and it would drip onto the manifold. Not really a big problem, but man oh man burnt antifreeze stinks bad! So when I was finishing up the A/C I pulled the adapter out and used pipe dope between the sending unit and adapter, and between the adapter and the head. No leaks now! :metal:

Those adapters look great. Where can I get one? Are the stock gauges electrical or mechanical?

Hi DJW32,
I actually made these adapters for Bob/Fred. I had some fall off scrap pieces that I made these for a few board members. I could make more if I had the material. C360 or C-3600 free machining brass hex stock.
Also, he used the oem style gauges electronic from an 88 up burb I believe.

Glock, do you remember where the speed signal goes? The speedo has 3 inputs if I remember correct. I am putting a LQ9 in a military blazer and I am going to use the 91 cluster I have but I am unsure which pin to put the wire from the computer to. Is that all I need to do once I figure it out for the speedo to work? I know I have to repin my plug to match the 91 and I am switchind to a 91 tcase with the vss.

Occasionally some is on epay. I haven't checked in a while. To answer your question, maybe, not sure. We haven't had to make any parts that leaves the fall off behind.

It doesn't need to be some hard to come by material to work. We used plain old brass for machining many different fittings & bushings and it works well. Much stronger than the same part made out of aluminum would be.

Onlinemetals will sell you just a couple inches of material if that is all you need. They will custom cut it to any size you want and the price gets cheaper the more you buy.

Hi guys,

I love this tread!!!

It's got me all wired up about doing the same with a small twist; maximum mileage!
My '86 swb has a 400sbc/700r4/2.74 combo right now.
With gas prices here in Europe around $ 8,- per gallon I want a combo I can drive as fuel efficient as possible. (I Loved the power and mileage on my old '98 LS1 Z28)

I don't push my cars hard, so I'm still thinking either a 4.8 or 5.3/4L60e combo.
I guess I'll go the Fred route,altough maybe a lower rearend? Like 3.08 or 3.23 or so with max. mileage in mind.

What's Fred's average mileage since the LS build? I only read about the mileage during the build.

If there was a place I could get all the parts needed for the swap at once.... That would be it for me since there are no 5.3 pullout combo's for sale here in Europe. Oridering every part bit for bit would really kill the deal for me....

Man this is a long thread. Took me a whole day of work to read this. I love my job!!! I like a few others on here have Fred's Twin and have planned pretty much the same thing only Im going with a whole different suspension setup. I talked to nate and hes in the process of setting up a coil over front end and I think im going to go with a 4-link rear but after seing that ladder bar setup that could be interesting too. I figure a 5.3 should be plenty as my 05 suburban had one and it pulled my 16ft trailer cross country several times no issues. Lighter truck ought to be better. I appreciate all the great info this thread gives and cant wait to see what you have planned next. Here is a pic of my truck.

Glock are you out there?

This is a wonderfull thread, I have read and re-read several times and catch something new each time.

I have an '84 LWB completely restored but still has the 305/700R4 combo in it. I have finally assembled all the parts and a 5.3/4L60E to start this project. I do still need to send the harnes and computer in for mod to standalone.

I have one question right now with probably alot more to follow in the future. You made an extension to frame mount on the pass side to support the new motor mount location and mentioned you would make a template. I will be doing the samething to mine but can't find the template, but I'm guessing from the pictures that you added about 2-3 inchs to the mount?

Hey Bill! Fred be good! Still the most dead solid reliable truck I think I've ever owned. The A/C needs worked on though, one of the R134 adapters has been leaking just ever so slightly and now it just cycles the compressor off and on. Otherwise, he's great!

Haven't done anything to him expect to drive him as much as possible. Will probably work on the A/C over the fall. Have been kicking around the idea of selling him next year and finish my 70 K10 by putting a 4.8 or 5.3 in it, A/C, clean up the interior and paint her. Selling Fred would get all that done. But it's just a though right now, nothing for sure.

In the mean time, my son is getting closer to driving age, and is really getting antsy to work on his 69 (in sig below). He has joined the forum too (brycerowdy), so hopefully he will be keeping me a little more active on here. :D
