Re: Random Photos ‘You took’

My guess would be the big time natural gas compressors used to push the gas from the mid stream gathering and dehydrating facilities to the end user utility’s. Sometimes these pipelines can go hundreds or even a thousand+ miles. For example, my grandfather worked for Washington gas and light co. For 35 years. One of the sources for DC and the surrounding areas’ natural gas was for a long time, and probably still is from the Gulf of Mexico. Engines such as this likely push the gas thru the pipelines between the gulf and DC.

It may be different between parts of the country but in our neighborhood natural gas powered engines push it along. One pumping station I toured many years ago had 4 huge 3 cylinder engines running. If memory serves me they turned at 150 rpm. That station pumped gas from Arkansas to Mississippi under the Mississippi river.

CAT 3616 engine. For the most part used for stationary power. Pump stations, as mentioned, and back up generators for hospitals and such.
Originally developed for use in railroad engines, but that didn't work out as planned. They were also promoted for use in marine applications. We had a pair of 3608s (eight cylinder version) in one of the tugs at work. They ended up being unreliable and very expensive to repair. After 11-12 years they were replaced with a pair of EMD's.
Video of a 3612 crankshaft being reground.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NlcTr8lqCA

The 797's shown above used 3500 engines. The next size down CAT engine series.

KB. Does your German Shepherd go nuts when you go out? Mine goes ballistic when we go out. I guess they call it separation anxiety. All I know is that he loses it. And he always knows when we're leaving. He runs around and throws a fit. I do take him out a lot, but I can't take him everywhere. He scares people. He's a big boy.

Sounds like they could be Ajax compressors or similar. We’ve got a bunch of them...

wow, sounds a lot like Fritz.. he just turned two so he is calming down some.. but definitely prefers human company and does not like staying home by himself.. thankfully tho he doesn't destroy the house while we're out.. he's about 85lbs and while very playful with us, his bark is deep and he's not afraid of strangers

:lol: Yeah. Duke has quite a bark too. I have a long driveway and have found UPS and Fedex packages about half way down it. I guess that's as close as the driver wanted to get to the house. My gardener is scared to death of him. But nobody's breaking into my house anytime soon. Duke is on the case. And I have .357 other reasons :)

I go up there every month or so. My friend's son is friends with a son of the sawmill owner. I've met him. I asked my friend about the trucks and he told me the other son owns them and that the father and son restore old trucks in a shop there. I know the wrong son! I'm going to see about getting to meet them now that I know.

Sunday was a really nice day so I went for a drive in the morning. I decided to stop at this point of the road where it passes between two quarries. There is just enough room for the road and the RR track between them, and beyond the smaller (3rd pic) one is the state road. You would never know you are riding along that cut when on that road

Thanks. Yes it is. I keep plugging away at it. I still can't believe how straight that car is. I'm going to go over it again and hit it with Meguiars #7 It'll still be a matte black but I'm good with that. My buddy's 59 Cadillac is matte black and it looks good IMHO.

I'm going for the same look. WTH. It's cheaper than a paint job. And I did take this picture. I had to set my beer down to take it.

I've heard that German Shepherd's have an incredibly strong bite. I buy Duke balls but they always end up under the furniture. They are strong dogs. Duke was chasing his ball and hit his head on the leg of my dining room table and about broke it off. He kept chasing the ball like it was nothing. His head is made of concrete. It didn't bother him at all.

I'll look into another bandana. Maybe a Raiders bandana? ;)

must be in the breed (even tho Fritz has some husky in him)

he likes to fumble his deer antler (we brought back from the farm) under the couch and then stand back and growl at it

he's head butted me a couple of times while I'm tying my boots, liked to knocked me out

but at least he's got good taste in sports :metal:

I promise these will be the last of winter this year. Winter came on kind of hard during the time I went missing. We got a storm where it snowed 8", then went to sleet , then snow, then, rain, back to snow. Them other snows and some sleet. First picture is the small glacier slowly slipping it's way off the roof. Got to get those snow birds installed. It sleeted pellets for hours. See how it just rolled and spilled onto that cinder block? That stuff didn't melt too fast and made walking hard to do. I kept a spot clear below the bird feeder. The one picture shows the shiny crust on the surface. The snows we had after that storm would just blow off with the first wind. That one picture showing the small deep holes in the snow outside the garage door are a mystery to me. I've noticed them in snow before. There appears to be a slight yellowish tint on some

Ho455, I had a feeling that it was a 36 series but I haven't messed with them first hand and didn’t want to speculate. We looked at some 3608’s a few years ago at auction, damn they are expensive to buy and rebuild. We were looking at upwards of 100k for me to rebuild it in house if we went that direction.

I am surprised that an 3608 would be that cheap today. About 1998 we lost a turbo and it took out a piston. The piston and liner was $26,000. We got extremely lucky and didn't have any damage to the head.
The other end of the cost was the boat was down for 7 days as there were no 3600 parts on the west coast. Had to wait for a truck from Peoria. The parts at the time were almost twice the cost of a Pack for an EMD. Add in the cost of the boat being down an extra 9 days. 7 days for parts and 2 extra days of labor over replacing a Pack on an EMD. The turbo rebuild was done locally so we weren't being robbed by CAT on that.
The cost of operation was very apparent as we had 2 sister tugs, one with the 3606's and one with a pair of 12-645 EMD's. Both tugs were repowered in the early 1990's They company sold the one with CATs in 2003 and the one with EMD's ran until 2015 when we retired it.
The 3606 tug wasn't part of our regular fleet (the EMD tug was), but we got involved after it limped in on one engine when the turbo failed.

Sorry, should have been more specific. That is not using cat parts, 100k in aftermarket parts is about where we were at. Cat breaks it off in you bad on there parts. It’s crazy how much the markup is.
