Well, the trip did not go as planned on a few fronts. Cooper (my oldest) got Covid the day before we left so he could not go with. The show was great 7,000 cars/trucks.
We received and award. My first ever from a Good Guys event. A big for me. Now for the bad. I had trans issues on the way to Columbus and I thought it was jsut low fluid. On the way home it got much worse. We went thru 5 quarts of trans fluid to allow us to limp home. It took over 5.5 hrs to get home. At one point, 115 miles from home I thought we were going to have to pull it over and get a tow. We kept pushing and made it. We were burned out (physically and mentally) after that. Home never looked SOOOOO GOOD. Just trying to keep it real that it is not always rainbows and sunshine in my garage. Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
You got an award! At Good Guys!
Sorry for the Covid, hope he is feeling better. Tranny issues can happen to anyone at any time. Yeah, it sucks, but there is a fix. So, I'd say you had a trip to remember. |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
that's the way it should be! use it enough that stuff happens! and getting recognized is even better.
i keep towing coverage that is 100miles to any destination ... makes that last 99miles of the drive a lot less stressful ;-) |

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Congrats on the Award, that is great.
Sorry about the covid, I trust it is not serious and he is feeling better. Limping an old car home is very stressful, but glad you made it. I hope the fix does not require too much work, and money. Congrats again, a Good Guys award is something to be very proud of. |

Congratulations on the award that is awesome. That is a missive show.
Did you have the trans rebuilt before you put it in? |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Congratulations on the award! Well deserved!
Sorry about the tranny. Hopefully it is a easy fix. The 4l60e in my Jimmy went into limp mode the other night on the way to dinner ate dinner and drove it home it was fine? |

Here is the awards presentation for Good Guys Columbus 2022. There are a lot of cool cars and trucks in this video. We accepted our award at the 20:39 minute mark.
https://youtu.be/XLVxmWlp8E0 Trans update: It is out and I'm running it to my trans guy tonight to evaluate. it was NOT a fun job. I should get the trans back next week. Thanks Marc |

Trans update......
I got the trans back on Friday. No internal damage which was good. Seal replaced. The stock trans pan's drain plug was seized on. I decided to swap the pan for a larger one (with a functioning drain plug) that will also cool better. I also decided to add a 2nd trans cooler. The trans cooled thru the bottom of the radiator. I deiced to add an additional inline cooler after the fluid leaves the radiator and before it goes back in the trans. Like most things on the Suburban I wanted to hide the cooler so it didn't look like an add on while keeping the additional lines short as possible. I settled on the front of the Suburban behind the front grill in front of the core support down low. I think it will catch a decent amount of air there. I also was able to use -6an fittings - 5/8" hose barb so I could tie into existing lines. I also had left over braided line so no money spent there. That almost never happens. All that is left is to install the shifter, hook up the battery and fill the trans. Thank you Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
things happen when you drive em! still beautiful though!

this is the best way! let the water cooler do the big end of the work and the air cooler just take a little more off the top. |

I forgot to take pics but I had trans fluid burned/baked into the SS exhaust. The clean up effort of the bottom side of the Suburban was the worst part. Marc |

Got the trans re-install buttoned up. Filled with fluid, checked for leaks. All that was left was to get it back on the ground and get some fresh petrol in it.
It felt so good to go for a drive lastnight. I still have bugs and grime from the 600+ mile round trip to Columbus last month. I will be washing the top side soon (the bottom received a full detail to remove all of the trans fluid). Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
sooo gooood. hopefully the miles come easier now.

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
At least you didn't hurt the trans and it was just a seal and oil. Extra cooling won't hurt, do you have a trans temp gauge? The award video had a bunch of nice vehicles, yours looked great rolling through. Congrats again.

oh man trans spills/leaks are the worst. i had a tranny line let go in the driveway, turned out the PO didnt install the clip on the line. took about 40 lbs of floor dry. |

I switched my lines over to flex with -6AN fittings. I did recently noticed they run close to the passenger side exhaust manifold. To keep them from burning thru and gutting myself of trans fluid, I ordered some heat wrap to protect those lines. I will install that before my 2 hr drive to next weekends show. Marc |

Marc, dont know why/how I never noticed it before... sliding rear side windows ..!!!..
Good deal on the "easy" trans fix..!!!!! |

IDK if I would describe it as "easy" as we were on our backs trying to wrestle the trans back into place...ha ha Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
So I had been chasing a host of trans issues since July. I can say it is FINALLY fixed. What was a cut/broken wire in one of the 13 LS ECU wires for the trans caused issues that were hard to pinpoint. It was throwing random open electrical trans codes. I bet I drained the trans fluid a total of 5 times fixing and trouble shooting. I replaced both 1-2 shift solenoids.
This truck, for I don't know how long (probably from day one) was starting off in 2 gear due to the trans being in limp mode. It didn't drive terrible. Also in limp mode it prevents it from going into OD. Once I repaired the wire, the truck was much more responsive starting off in 1st (who knew...ha ha). I can now do burn outs. During a test drive I noticed that once the trans went into OD with the TC locked there was too much timing (at lower speeds) in the tune and you could hear detonation. I took it back to the tuner to tweak the tune and adjust shift points slightly. This last step from the tuner identified that I incorrectly wired in the brake switch to unlock the TC once I hit the brakes. Only an issue now that OD works and the TC engages. THIS THING RIPS NOW....so much more fun to drive. It is louder as it accelerates in 1st and the RMP's come up. Also in OD it is so quiet and smooth. We are hitting up a cars and coffee about 1:25 minutes from home on Saturday. I also plan to attend the C10 Nats in Nashville at the end of this month. Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
That's sounds great Marc ...glad you got the bugs out

Funny I was just talking with my son about filming that soon. He always rides with me an he noticed a real difference in performance so i had to show him that we can now do burnouts. He was riding shotgun when we did some donuts in the Camaro right before we pulled the drive train for the Suburban. Quote:

Well done Marc :)

Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Marc, glad that took care of your problem. I agree with the burnouts, it is so easy with the LS set-up. Have to watch myself to ease into the gas at stop lights, or it will lite up...Jim

The Suburban is really working great. So much fun to drive with everything dialed in. We have been squeezing in as many car events and CnC's as we can as we are losing warm weather. Closing in on 6,000 miles. My boys and I will be attending the C-10 Nats in Nashville at the end of the month. Come say HI if you attend that show.
Thank you Marc |
Re: 53 Surburban "Family Truckster"
Glad you are enjoying your build. The season end soon in my area also. Steve
