Re: PO has me PO'd
Hey, dale 99.....
Have another favor to ask. Could you show me how your coil is mounted on your intake? Was told today, as i was ordering my FAST XFI, that my coil could mount up like the camaros...any help? Thank you for getting me past the pcv system |
Re: PO has me PO'd
My coil is not normal. Normal is on the passenger side of the intake, bracket bolted to the left 2 rear bolts.
like this if the link will work. http://s3.beta.photobucket.com/user/paulo57509/media/camaro/coilbracket-mod.jpg.html?filters[term]=recent&filters[primary]=images |
Re: PO has me PO'd
there we go. Thats the coil on the left of the pic, thats cut off. There is a "z" bracket that bolts to the intake. Then you have an L shapped bracket that the coil bolts to, that sits on the z bracket.
I dont even have that stuff to assemble and snap pics of for you. |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Thanks, thats a start....wonder if gm might still have that stuff. I have a MSD coil, so i will have to modify it anyway
Thank you for your time:smoke: |
Re: PO has me PO'd
which msd coil? They make a "oem replacement" one, which is what I'm running. Its just not in the stock location.
Found a pic of my setup from a few years ago online. Coil is still in this location, but everything else is different. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphot..._7371417_n.jpg |

Re: PO has me PO'd
6al is a controller box which does the same thing as a computer system. IIRC you still need an actual coil.

Re: PO has me PO'd
ohhh, a pcm. I grew up with an electrician, so wiring is not difficult for me. But just take your time, dont rush it.

Consider yourself lucky to have electrical background, it doent come easy to me. Trust me, i will be on the phone alot to the technicians at FAST. First step in the directions states to only run plus and negative to the battery, no intermittent leads any where. Not heeding this advise is the leading cause of problems. Also, running pcm wires to close to the ignition wires, and spark plug wires Now i have to find about a 4" holesaw, location right above trans. cover Dont rush it....possibly you havnt noticed when i started my build. lol |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Is that harness designed specifically for the TPI?
|
Re: PO has me PO'd
You have pcm, or ecm.
PCM=Powertrain control module. ECM=Engine control module. Main difference, if it controls the transmission and more (ABS, traction control, transfer case, etc). So that may just be a "ECM". |

Thanks for the explanation, i have pcm |
Re: PO has me PO'd
No, just curious if FAST makes a retrofit harness for the TPI for use with the XFI, or if you had to modify one to work.
So the EFI will control an electronic transmission? Quote:

Location,location,location.....
Fourth possible mounting spot. Considered face of heater box, passenger side kick panel, firewall behind glovebox, and now inside glovebox. Leaning towards inside, making new sheetmetal glovebox/pcm mount http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7115/8...76fcb1fc_c.jpg 20121109_105059 by jarosaj, on Flickr |

Re: PO has me PO'd
In my old show truck s10 I used the glove box to hold my pcm, HATED IT. I would suggest behind and under the dash.

Maybe make the back of the glovebox out of plexiglass |
Re: PO has me PO'd
the plexiglass idea is good! Its your truck so do as you wish, just letting you know my experience.

Just found a new source for TPI parts, they had my two cables, one for coil to distri., and one for power to coil tpi parts.net Cape Coral, Fla |
Re: PO has me PO'd
What'd you do that for?
I was just wondering where you bought the XFI ECM. Quote:

I refused to take it, and he ordered another one that arrived on thursday. Just left a untrusting feeling, but he did make it right. I wasnt going to say anything, but since you asked. I have found another speed shop in my area with a dyno, so i will be using him for the final tune Finally, i have an idea of where to mount it....passenger side kick panel. Thanks Dale |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Aaahhhh I understand :)

Re: PO has me PO'd
Mocked up to see where the rest of the harness will lay. First attempt, pcm was to high, and interfered with the bottom of the dash
Using the holes for the heater control, and a tab on the heater box If i mounted it on the kickpanel, there was a chance water would drip on it, so im going to try it here http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8207/8...55d89fb2_c.jpg 20121111_224030 by jarosaj, on Flickr |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Dale 99, wonder if i could ask another favor, pic...
Need to know where your MAP sensor is located, maybe even a pic of the bracket. 1985 didnt have a boss on the plenum for the bracket. So, i have to come up with a mod. Your coil mount inspired me to copy it...ty |
Re: PO has me PO'd
My upper plenum is the correct for my year, 90-92, so it has a threaded boss for the bracket on what would be the rear, right side. It has an L-shaped bracket. I made one out of aluminum for a year or so, tell I found a GM one. The map has an elbow that comes out the bottom, and goes right into a vac port.... which your 85 wont have as you mentioned.
You can t some of that off, or I have seen people drill/tap the plenum for extra ports. Or a popular mod is to move the IAT sensor from the bottom of the plenum into the air stream, and then put a hose barb there for more vac ports. I dont have car with me at moment, so I cant take pics. Will check in a min to see if one of my facebook pics shows it. :edit: nope, will have to take one for you later. |

port, was going to use that. Your right, parts are hard to find, i do have a 'L' shaped bracket that i havent found the home for yet, maybe ill get lucky and it will be my map sensor bracket Found new tpi parts supplier, just nothing for used parts. Been hanging out at the FAST XFI forum, asking questions and reading. Starting to get a grasp on all this new terminolgy, and what goes where Take your time on the pic, as i have lots of other things to work on:smoke: Edit...the IAT location may be an option, since i need another port for my brake booster |
Re: PO has me PO'd
post a pic of the questionable bracket.
brake booster goes in the left rear of the plenum. Kinda gets in the way of the spark plug wires. |
Re: PO has me PO'd
4 Attachment(s)
ok, looked. As for ports on the plenum, I have..
1. hvac.. pass side 2. charcoal canister.. pass side 3. map.. pass side 4. brake booster.. left rear 5. fuel pressure.. underside where IAT use to be. If you want any of these full size, give me a pm with your email addy. |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Dude, thank you very much for taking the time, just the info i needed...i dont think the bracket i have is a map bracket, close to that but no cigar. Its gotta go somewhere
Those fat runners look great on there! |
Re: PO has me PO'd
Is that a L31 Vortec distributor I see?

The runners really helped on the upper rpm range. Most people say TPI chokes out at about 4500, Ive spun this thing up to 5800. crate 350 alumn vette heads LT1 cam stamped rockers(tried full rollers and couldnt make them stay tight) ported vette base intake large port runners modified plenum (got rid of egr wall and hogged out for larger runners) stock throttle body, but added splitter 0411 pcm swap stock air intake (heres my choke) aluminum crank/alt pully Id like to get the base intake you have, but for stock heads. :metal: |
