"...Vaseline & paper towels.." To do what? Sounds kinda nasty to me, lol.

As some kind of rust remover? Never heard of that idea before. The paper towels & Ospho worked great though.

Hsdropout- I've wondered about using fender welt. You know these trucks never came with it, right? I think it can look really good but I'd worry it would trap moisture/start rust again.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

The Slippery Slope"

I wanted off white/almond letters to go with the contrast color on the cab. No dice, only straight white, black or chrome. The added "flash" in back made the other chrome on the truck look like ass.

http://i832.photobucket.com/albums/z...ps69581947.jpg

So I bought new mirrors...
which made the arms look bad....
which made the door handles look bad....
which made me think of the scratch guards (haven't decided if I'm installing those or not yet:

As you can see the door handle chrome was pitted and totally dead:

I worked on my interior. I stretched some fabric and covered both boxes in resin. fiberglass will be next. I will end up wrapping these in leather.

Marc,
Pardon my ignorance because I know nothing about fiberglas. The fabric is

fiberglas, right? You draped the fabric where you wanted it, THEN you brush on the resin to impregnate it?

If so, why did you say, "...fiberglas will be next.."? I'm missing something.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Pulled the inside cab corners to fiberglas in the speaker enclosures. Found out the guy that sold me the speakers ripped me off, not honest mistake but very well thought out fraud. A** was moving to Colorado, I hope a bear eats him. Did get the stock door mirror cleaned and tapped and transfered the pattern to the passenger side, tomorrow will tack in some nuts. Got some furniture to refinish and repurpose to raise cash, glad yard and estate sale season is back in swing. Also tilled, cut up some firewood and other stuff for the head cook and veggie grower.

Tee shirt fabric, I use it too, great for complex shapes. You stretch, hit it with light coat of resin to stiffen it, then when it dries start laying up the fiberglas mat, etc. Can also be used to make a reverse mold.

A 'Snuggy' works great , and its stronger, just add resin then, Bondo no need to add fiberglass.

One can always get another one in another color or the latest Snuggy with a backside. Then she'll be happy. :)

From this

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/n...psa28a8c2e.jpg

To this in 4 hours, brushed on enamel. Took almost as long to tape off the spears and the cab for the two tone as it did to paint the whole thing black. I will call it a 40 footer! I plan to let the paint cure then sand down through it.

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Yes, what he said. Ultimately I will be covering it with leather, so I don't need to have the body work spot on..

Next is the fiberglass mat with more resin.

Happy Easter

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

Holy hell, that looks just like my wife 58 fleetside sitting in the yard, Now THAT'S a driver!! nice one man!!

I cut out the rust in the other step side fender last night and welded in new metal. I ran out of gas shielded wire after my first 2 tacks so I had to do the rest of it with flux core. After a couple burn through, I got the heat dialled in and got it done. The bed is now ready to be roughed up and shot with primer.
I took a stripping disc to the lower part of the front drivers side fender thinking there would be some rot hiding behind the apparent bondo abuse and yet, the metal was clean. This truck does however have a ton of brazing done to repair some older front end damage. I've come to the conclusion that I've been over thinking the body on this truck and need to stay on task with my original build plan and have a rough body on a modern chassis and powertrain set up.

I have this entire week off work so there will be some major progress happening on this thing. Wiring and mounting body panels are on the top of that list

I like the fancy Aluminum recovery tanks but can't see in spending that much money for something I can not see the fluid in. I needed an overflow tank for the radiator so went to Autozone and bought one of the generic plastic recovery tanks. I used the factory holes that where already drilled, put in Three rubber grommets for hose and two behind the mounting bracket so it wont rub against the the paint, also split a gas line and placed on the lower bracket in two spots that lay against the fender wheel all for under $10.

Excellent and cheap...which of course is the only better than excellent alone!

I never thought of not being able to see the coolan.! I HAVE a fancy spun aluminum one I've not installed yet and hadn't considered that.

Looks good. I can't remember if you used welt between the fender & bedside or not? Was the hassle just that they're big & awkward?

Dan, I like your chrome letters, I might have to go for some too. Yes, welting, really nice stuff I got from Classic Parts and yes...................just award, a lot of up and down, crawling under, reaching etc, some 30+ bolts if you include the spare tire bracket which was challenging in itself.......

Worked on my truck over spring break, found out starter needs to be rebuilt, cleaned gauge glass and got the front axle cut out and the other mocked up, pulled out the seat and nasty shag interior carpet it had along with gas tank which surprisingly is in great shape:mm:

Pulled out the dash pieces.
Labeled them and put them away for a rainy day.
I figured each part would make for a nice small project. i.e. Gauges, heater, turn signal assembly

I did some measuring and more measuring. Now I have a pretty good idea where my engine and transmission is going to sit. It helped when I decided to go with a pusher fan in front of the radiator.
Now to mock it all up and make motor mounts.:smoke:

Re: What Did You Do With Your Truck Today ?

we mounted the cab, hung the doors, tried to fit the front clip but due to some older front end collision damage, it's going to take a little massaging to make it all work properly. We installed the Rebel wire fuse panel and ran all the wires to their future homes and also went through the chassis from front to back re-chcecking every nut, bolt, grease nipple, cotter pin, etc to make sure it's all there. It was a pretty productive few days off and I have 3 more to go. I'd like to think I could get the wiring damn near done before I go back to work
