This week was even more rough than the previous three. I managed to fail Friday's test with 79% when a pass is 90% So I walked out, and came in 15 minutes later to rewrite, rather than on Monday and managed to drag in at 100% which was the top mark for the day. My feedback on my practical was excellent too. Spent most of today with my bride. Quote:
Doing just that, had a great day and now have a fire going. Spent most of the day with Nicola today. Shops, great lunch etc. Then home and she went to see her dad and I went to the garage for about three hours. Started by just cleaning up and oiling the pushrods and also cleaning the garage and my massive oil basin...... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ssk0tpur1.jpeg Then found the Edelbrock manifold and thought it would be good to give it a quick clean....... Took off the thermostat housing and found it was pretty deeply pitted in three places on the inside..... Cue more new parts. I think the thermostat is probably still fine, so will leave it alone and refit once I have new parts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...shwcy3qdn.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sn2r6ofcu.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sa60s8nd8.jpeg Took it all apart, then petrol and thinners cleaned it all, masked off all the relevant holes. Pulled the blasting cabinet out the garage and cleaned it all up. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sjofnz4p9.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...smsrdnrzj.jpeg Cleaned the inside and de-oiled it, removed the masking tape etc....... Done. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sbf5zsti8.jpeg Now just waiting for the brown van to bring my bits.... Then Paul and I will rebuild the motor. Remember next weekend is the NSRA Swapmeet. |

Rian, the painted motor is looking good! keep it up and next thing you know you will be putting it in

I look forward to pulling down e last bolt on it once reassembled. Well, it seems that this afternoon a parcel was delivered from Summit Racing. I ordered the parts last Monday afternoon, so 8 days........ Got a be good. Now just got to wait till I get a chance to open, unpack and obviously use them. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sfr6xyh97.jpeg After work today I popped around to see an old friend and serial Teardrop trailer builder, Dave, whose latest creation you can Google to get a better look at "Campenarti Steampunk Teardrop Trailer" or look for it on Facebook where he has a page on various things.......... He recently built an acoustic amplifier for his mobile phone...... Click the link below for a look. It was good seeing him and his family again, strange how some friended ships have no link to time. |

I cant wait to see what is in that pretty box .

Me too. Go on open it up and let's see.

8 days from the US to England via summit? Damn! That's not bad at all? So what did you order?!

I am pleased with the service, fast, efficient and got a discount from Summet as well, thanks to Flashed on here. The shipping and UK taxes are what kills us building here. What I bought......? Nothing as impressive as your build. Copied from a previous entry and pasted here. This was thanks to "Flashed" in Canton, Georgia USA offering me his discount code for orders, so thanks for the saving buddy. Now here is a lesson for those who do not know it........... I have always used either guys like Steve Lang who charges a Dollar for Pound to bring in stuff, you would be hard pushed to match that yourself, so I will continue to use him in future as his service is exemplary. Then I also use my friends like Ta2Don to pick up and post out little bits for me, like the brake rebuild kits, paying him the item and postage costs via PayPal. This time however, with Paul Y's advice and encouragement, I investigated Summit Racing's other option....... It is called i-parcel and is a system where you pay postage or shipping and duties up front rather than paying the taxes to the couriers, or a handling fee plus duties to the Post Office. If you look at the shipping costs, excluding taxes oon the photo, you will see that this seems to be a sensible route to go. So I have ordered a few bits that we need to rebuild the motor better. ( I will be selling my existing camshaft and followers once the motor is rebuilt) Hopefully the rebuild will nett us as close as possible to Summits claimed 280 bhp on these parts. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sdckvwk9k.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s0bzvr8gf.jpeg |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Sweet! Always fun to tear into the heart of the truck and shore things up. Guessing Summit doesn't do the free shipping over $99 to England huh? That's a bummer!

This is the problem with 5 weeks away from home, in a hotel, training, not much gets done. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Amazingly...... The first 5 weeks of classroom training for the new job came to an end yesterday.
Next up is two weeks of shadowing, and much online home study plus a week of conference, followed by one more week in class plus another exam and practical evaluation, so I really only start working the 25th of April, which means Truck and Garage time will be severely limited. But there has to be some. In time honoured style, the last two days we had an outside lecturer in who was very good at what he does, but only let us out at 4pm which on a Friday in England, is not a good thing. My trip to the office on a good day takes two hours, being 120 miles....... Yesterday..? Three hours to get home. I guess the upside of that is the fact it took me three hours to get home from a job, rather than an interview. Anyway, I was tired, irritable and kinda looking for a reason to get road rage, jump out of my car and get the living cramp beat out of myself and then to become a viral sensation of how to finish a week at work. It did not happen....... So when I got home, unpacked, laundry in the machine, cuppa tea and sandwich after 7pm the cats took notice, my wife went back to her forensic telly (I am sure she is just using it to learn how and where not to hide the body) but only after she said that the local supermarket had used me as a model for their new Ginger bread man, and that she had got me a sample (I do like gingerbread cookies) Gotta like her thinking. Me in shorts, roll on summer. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...st1h22sax.jpeg I had planned on leaving the big brown box unopened over the weekend, as I have a load of yard work and some online training modules to deal with over the weekend, and Sunday there is the NSRA Swapmeet in Essex. So I only peeped when I could not wait any longer. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sawkw3itg.jpeg Looking forward to having Paul Y and mate Martin over soon to get into reassembling the motor. Next Friday is Wheels Day over in Surrey. Sunday and Monday is again the Chatham Festival of Steam. This winter I wore much more shoes and safety boots than ever before...... Another weekend over....... No truck time in the garage at home, but some truck stuff nonetheless. Drove over to mate Martins this morning at 07.30 and dropped my car at his place. We then headed out to Arena Essex for the NSRA Swapmeet. Got there nice and early, met up with Andy "Über Cool" and some of his mates in the car park to make Martin a happy chappy...... This long propshaft came from Del's truck where Martin got a cab, doors etc from last year, it went up north to Andy, and now back this way again. Martin also got lucky to buy a new heater matrix core for his truck. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...stxzfdppi.jpeg My scores for the day included some stuff I have no use for but wanted and some stuff I needed for the rebuild. Let's see if you can figure which they were...... http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sp2muzzza.jpeg Once calculated, based on what I paid for the mostly unused parts, and what they cost at stalls for new, it seems I was still ahead £10.00 and got the parts "free" This is a good reason to go to Swapmeets. Meeting up with a load of friends from various forums today made it even better. My Best Buy for the day was this small quick release Gas filler cap for £10.00 and it is something I both wanted and needed for the rebuild. My plans to relocate the filler neck from where it is currently in the side of the load bed. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s6nw4hutn.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sg9pu0cxi.jpeg Plan is to move the filler neck of my relocated fuel tank to the rear corner, just inside the tailgate, but below the level of the load bed as I do plan to fit a tonneau cover again once the truck is done. This filler cap and its mount are really narrow, so will take little space. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...spethiydp.jpeg Solid metal vs chrome plated plate.....? You can see the difference. Taiwanese chrome and rust vs the solid metal item. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sdeqxfrx0.jpeg Also bought an oval solid ally air filter with similar look to my existing valve covers for a sensible price. I will paint the sections between the ribs red and then polish the ribs back to original. Next to the original air filter and valve covers. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s9qngfy3m.jpeg The old school hooter is for an acoustic speaker like the one I showed on here last week. The petrol pump nozzle........ Remember this build? http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...ca-retro-build Watch this space. Also bought a new replacement thermostat housing and three tubes of grease. Fresh grease is good. So a great weekend all told. |

The filler cap is certainly one of my favourite pieces to date. We are at Wheels day on Friday and a bike Auto Jumble on Monday. Sure we can find a time that suits us both. Couple of yard jobs after work, including cutting the grass. Also turned two grass boxes into one as mine had given up on its hooks. Managed to poke a screwdriver into the tip of my finger with force, it may hurt a bit in the morning. But Stupid Should Hurt. After that I decided to just do another small prep job, it serves no purpose but makes me feel I have done something. So some VHT paint on the gearbox that I had already cleaned and masked up. Lot of effort for something that will not be seen. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sc2ztwzm5.jpeg Another little job done. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s0icrmsqt.jpeg |

I felt that way after painting my transmission too. I thought "wow I just spent a lot of time painting something no one will see, and I hope I don't have to look at too often." Oh well . . . hobby of love, not of logic, right?

Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Question asked elsewhere on Garagejournal.
Thought I would copy Nd paste as we need fresh blood into the hobby. Every time I see a young guy build a truck it pleases me immensely. Based on a question asked by a friend in the USA the reply below probably has some relevance to most of us and for those interested. Quote:
Yes, the roof is vinyl, and done very smartly. I liked that. Red truck...... I hope so. I guess in the show ground more than 900 and then loads parked up and bikes too plus scooters. Here is a link to some great photos I did not take. CLICK LINK: http://retrorides.proboards.com/thre...-day-2016-pics One of the best parts of Wheels day to me is that it is for charity. But also that you will find a $100k car next to an unfinished $1000 car that is someone's pride and joy. People all get on and there are no prima donnas. There are all sorts represented and I do not know the exact way prizes are awarded, but I think there are Top Ten awards etc. This car was built by three school boys........ Aged 14, 15 and 17 with the 15 year old the leader. Video link below. I know the family of the leader of the pack as well and have Euan, the dads Helicoil kit in the garage to redo my gearbox mount holes..... Small world. Worthy of an award for 15 weeks of work to build from scratch using a Lexus V8 motor. It has Gullwing doors and disabled access with electrical hospital bed actuators robbed from a hospitals scrap pile. That's how rods should be built. The Boy in the pic is the team leaders brother. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...shyo9s7qy.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...smz4nbiny.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sign5ldwi.jpeg Hope that answers your questions. You would have loved it there....... There was a dedicated Licorice store as well. When I stripped the truck and pulled the engine and transmission, one of the things I found was that both the mounting bolt holes were stripped out, one so much that you could push and pull the bolt straight up and down, the other a very wobbly loose fit. None of the trans or chassis cross member bolts were the same...... So 4/4 different. Would so love to know the history of this truck........ I found a copy of the original California title. Came to England in 2004 Not sure if anyone in the USA can shed light on the trucks history..... Where it came from etc. [URL=http://s294.photobucket.com/user/niknakpix/media/Billybob14_zps2cb9a663.jpg.html]http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps2cb9a663.jpg[/URL http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sdw9f1pne.jpeg So it was another job that needed doing before rebuilding. Paul Y had also brought me a trans kit to fit to make the responses better. This morning I wanted to remove the trans sump plug, and on inspection found I could undo it with my fingers..... Saved by the bell?? After draining a load of oil I upended it and proceeded to use Euan "Moosevan" 's Helicoil kit. Drilling, then tapping a new thread for the insert. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sqyqwzvqz.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sdv5mscpa.jpeg Blown clear of all dwarf from the cut. Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!
Thanks Martin.
Easter weekend...... Plan was to go to Wheels Day and enjoy the rest of the weekend away from the truck with Nicola. Clocks went Forward today, so we are now formally in summer time. Did a bunch of house stuff this morning and by 2pm there was nothing left to do. So I sneaked down to the garage to clean up the filler and breather caps for the valve covers. Paint was in mind as I am not prepared to pay the monies that those sexy finned ally pieces cost out there. My very good friend Bret in Austin, Texas gets the blame squarely for this latest progression........ His engine. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...s0wlogbxu.jpeg So looking at my valve covers, it needed to be addressed. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sesc6pmti.jpeg Cleaned up. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...suo3abpqq.jpeg http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sjhq7zf4v.jpeg Then of course I started to clean up the cast ally covers........ What a PITA of a job !!! http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sal24u2xh.jpeg I usually chat to my buddy in St Louis, Missourri through the day checking out his work and of course showing him my pitiful progress. He can paint and wrap a NASCAR race truck in 24hrs so his progress is always fast. When I moaned about polishing the ally covers, he shot me a couple of pics of some new, unused covers from one of his Sprint cars with a silly Buy it Now and collect later and get a beer price. Price was perfect, but I decided in the end to stay traditional until I go Big Block with silly internals. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sizlglzn8.jpeg Three hours later, hand polished (I did try use my buffing wheels but they failed too) http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...saumeguuk.jpeg Nicola also made us an awesome lamb roast for Easter, in the mean time I masked up the covers after they had been polished silly, then washed with Amonia based detergent and then dry cloth buffed again. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...sehzcsnj6.jpeg The new air filter cover masked as well. Paint tomorrow. http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/m...svxaohr6f.jpeg So off to get some etch primer and fresh Chevy engine block red in the morning. Happy Easter all. |
Re: Grizz's Redneck Express 1966 Chevy Short Fleetside RESTO-GO!

The Ford Taunus Transit van I posted up on page one of this thread was a MoJo death sale...... I lost it completely at one point. Thankfully it did come back, and Nicola made me follow the dream of buying a truck. Anyway, I spent quite a bit of time at midnight last night chatting with my mates Dennis in St Louis, Missouri, Paul NevEno in Ada, Oklahoma and Chad in Tulsa, Oklahoma......... The nett result was some English cash going to America to be spent on something very secret and special for the truck, to be collected at Clems shindig in October this year. So last night I started to paint the ally, then realised the job needed etch primer. Cleaned up the mess today after going to Halfords for more Chevy VHT red..... Oooooppps, sorry sir, it has been discontinued, but you can try this metallic of the same colour. Price is up too.
