Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

Mark,

Are these 2.5" inlet and outlet. I am wanting to run some glass packs in place of my current Flowmasters, but everything I have seen is on 2.25" for glass packs.

I guess I am a rebel I run a cutout on my Camaro all the time. My valve broke one day under hard acceleration and I haven't ever fixed it. So I just took it off and run the straight cutout. It does still have cats though so its about as loud as dual exhaust. I have to climb under there and put the cap on when I get it inspected.

Look forward to hearing how these sound.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I think I'm the oddball, my exhaust system is 2.25", so these Purple Hornies will fit perfectly. I see where Cherry Bomb offers 2.5" in & out on some of their glasspacks.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

The following update was posted yesterday in the “What did you do to your truck today” thread: (I didn’t have a video put together at that time).

A nice new pair of Flowtech Purple Hornies (glasspack mufflers) arrived today. We headed straight for the muffler shop and had them installed within 45 minutes! He retained all my hangers, and even my turn downs. He just surgically removed the old mufflers and inserted the new ones in the same exact locations. I hung on to the old mufflers as they last indefinitely. I'll probably have them installed in my daughter’s truck.

The dash cam videos turned out lousy, so we'll be shooting some new stuff with an IPhone hopefully tomorrow. (Note – I cropped and combined a couple of decent shots using Microsoft Movie Maker). In this photo the passenger side glasspack is installed, while the Flowtech Terminator (chambered muffler) remains to be done:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/912/XvUWt2.jpg

Man these things sound sweet. At idle, the muffler rumble is noticeable. At full throttle they are about 80% as loud as when the cutouts are open!

And here is a combined video taken over the last couple of days. The 1st segment is the old Flowtech chambered mufflers turning right at the corner of Trent and Pines in Spokane Valley. The 2nd segment is the truck leaving on a green light at Pines, and the 3rd segment is turning right again on Trent. Segments 2 & 3 have the new Flowtech Purple Hornies glasspack mufflers in place, for a direct comparison to the earlier mufflers. The sound breaks up at the end, but that is caused by my cheap import dash cam, not the engine:

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

It's a Richmond Super T10. It is the W model with the 2.64 1st gear. It has worked flawlessly since purchase.

My only disappointment has been that it isn't as distinctively loud as a Muncie Rock Crusher, but I didn't want to put up with a 2.20 low gear. With the gear drive and the mufflers I'm not sure it could be heard anyway!

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

Sitting in the house watching all the rain and hail, I got bored enough to start working towards creating my first 1/64th scale 1962-63 GMC stepside shortbed. And it only took 4 trucks to get it done:

Here’s a mockup of the finished product:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/911/ipT4rQ.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/x8HQ61.jpg

Obviously there’s a lot more work to be done. The frame needs to be shortened, and the back of the cab built. I’m not sure I have the skills to fabricate the Buick grille bar and bumper bullets, but stranger things have happened! I’m also not sure what color to paint it – Blitz Black like mine, or maybe red or something colorful that might show up better on something so small.

This panel truck donated the GMC grille and front bumper:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/vSHPWW.jpg

And this truck was tubbed with deep wheels in the back so it donated the chassis:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/UBA5QY.jpg

This one had the skinny wheels shown in the previous photo. It provided the bed and rear bumper:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/JGUVT4.jpg

Before disassembly it looked like this:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/633/9YJ37C.jpg

And one of these offered up the cab, hood, and glass:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/540/I4OFpo.jpg

It may take a while to complete as I have lawn tractor parts due to arrive tomorrow or Thursday. It’s a high priority to get back in service so it may take some time to get back to this project.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I don't remember where I picked it up, but it was a couple of years ago. It has Yogi Bear on the hood, his face on the doors, and Jellystone park on the sides. Markings underneath include Thailand, Mattel, and Hot Wheels. I don't see any dates, but it does seem to have an E01 marked.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

Why not mock up 73 rear fenders to see how they would look and I would go with a brighter color being 1/64 scale.

markeb01 04-15-2015 10:34 PM

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I actually have one with the 73 rear fenders already, but it's with the 64-66 cab:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/wJwRPR.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/wLPdNy.jpg

Thought this time I'd try one that looks more like a stocker, since the only wrap around windshield model I'm aware of is that slammed fleetside.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I gave the truck a bath tonight in prep for a photo session tomorrow. Looking things over, I noticed it appears time to replace the shiny rear window trim. The first installation was a complete failure back on Post 749 (Page 30 of my build thread). I subsequently installed a 2nd chrome bead lock shown on Post 781 (Page 32). The second bead lock had minor problems too, but turned out well enough to live until now. Here’s what it looks like today:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/m3yWTF.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/913/Vc47ZK.jpg\

Even from a distance the lower right corner looks like a chunk of lead instead of chrome or stainless trim. I’m going to miss the extra bit of shiny stuff, but I’m not going through the replacement process a third time. I still have the black rubber bead lock in perfect condition that I originally installed with the window seal in 1998, so it’s going back in as it only takes minutes and requires no effort at all. Hopefully tomorrow if nothing else gets in the way.

Well that didn't take long. All of about 5 minutes. Pulled the damaged chrome bead lock and stuck in the black rubber one. All set for another 20 or 30 years!

Well I have learned to “never say never”!

I did find it interesting that with the chrome bead lock off the truck, it holds its shape and lies completely flat in the corners:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/21lufZ.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/qjSryc.jpg

If a person had a template like this to form/mold a new one ahead of time, it could probably be installed by hand without the use of the tool which would greatly minimize the risk of damage to the delicate finish during installation.

To be honest I’m not all that disappointed with how it looks in black. Maybe not fancy, but it looks purposeful anyway. It would probably be easier to do a 3rd time, but when I match my laziness up against my ambition, lazy frequently wins!

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

Ive had the same issue with both my chrome lock beads and will also probably go back to the plain black bead. Had a buddy whos a professional install guy do both and both came out the same. 2nd one wasn't as minor, but after a few months the clear over the chrome started to come off again.

Thanks for the input, good to find it's not just my amateur installation technique.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

No, they got me too. And your installs are very meticulous.....so I wouldn't fault that. It seems that the slightest pressure on install causes it to loose adhesion to the lock strip. Like you.....Its not overly bad....but my OCD will eventually cause me to go back to the plain strip.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

Finally got a chance to capture a decent picture today. The sun was just too harsh to do any better with the equipment I have, but at least the one photo shows all the latest cosmetic changes to the outside of the truck – lowered bumper bullets and front license plate mount, complete hood ornament and base, illuminated 54 Buick portholes, H4 low beam lamps, and repositioned dash cam above the inside mirror:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/vqq90C.jpg

And this snapshot shows the black rear window bead lock restored to its original position:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/901/M6Pron.jpg

Unfortunately the racket from the new glasspack mufflers doesn’t come through in photos!

Lovely photos Mark.

I do like the horses in the background too.

You guys really do have space out there.

The new company I start working for in June is based in Seattle, guess that's 4 days by horse from you.

markeb01 04-28-2015 01:57 AM

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I thought the horses were pretty photogenic and a nice touch, but they aren't always cooperative with posing!

There are 3 lots on our end of the street and 2 of the 3 are half acre. The 3rd is a double lot/full acre. It's a lot to maintain, but the space and separation are certainly nice.

I too really like the shot with the horses and flowering tree, but I also dig the rear shot with your neighbors truck in the background...:metal:

My truck was originally purchased by our local s'cool district (model reference...) and one of the maintenance buildings in town will make a great backdrop once I get mine re-assembled...;)

markeb01 04-28-2015 12:02 PM

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

Thanks for stopping by guys! I like the maintenance building idea for a backdrop as well. The neighbors truck in the background was originally an Air Force truck, and he actually met one of the guys that worked on it when it was in service. It has a rebuilt small block in it now, but is due up for a big block swap in the near future.

Here's a better shot of it. He's already replaced the hood (this is the old hood) and has fenders and doors for it as well:

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I suppose it all depends on where the truck lived when it was on duty as to how they look today. The vehicles we had in Yuma were maintained and treated like brand new throughout their "service" life. Vehicles at some other locations got beat senseless.

PM responded to. Thanks for asking.

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

It was a beautiful 75 degree day yesterday, so we spent 4 hours driving around town in the truck having fun while taking care of some tasks. The air conditioner got its first opportunity to show off, and man was it nice. Just enough to make the cab comfortable and not over chilled – on the lowest blower setting.

I’m ready to resume the kitchen overhaul project, but with company coming for Mother’s day, I had to leave things alone and find something else to do. So after achieving very little modeling activity over the last 10 years, I decided it was time to get some things done so I could really progress.

In all, I painted five 1/25 scale models today. A 40 Ford convertible for my wife, a Willys gasser, two 57 Ford sedans, and a 52 Chevy fastback. Testor’s De Ja Blue, Mystic Green, and Tamiya’s TS-14 Gloss Black. All of them turned out much nicer than the snapshots indicate:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/Pdwfgd.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/32Vyix.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/910/RcZMPD.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/IwgTmI.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/905/79nHgA.jpg

Some of them have been waiting years for paint. I’ve grown to really hate painting models, since it requires nearly as much work as doing an actual car if you want the results to turn out nice.

One of the 57's will end up looking something like each of these:

Re: Markeb01 Build Thread

I made some significant modeling progress yesterday. I built this 49 Ford long ago, and installed 16” whitewall tires, to closely replicate the earliest photo of this car I ever saw published:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/gHeVG2.jpg

The real car was a fordor and looked kind of goofy with tires this big, but it was what they had available to promote at the time.

I’ve grown tired of the model over time, and decided it was in need of an update into the 1960’s so it gained a set of the best 15” scale chrome reversed wheels I’ve ever found (they look much better in real life):

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/537/lmWti1.jpg

I also slapped the Willys on a chassis, and accomplished some assembly on my wife’s 40 convertible. They will both be left alone for a few months while the paint hardens completely:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/BkH0Ta.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/GRjOT3.jpg

On a real truck topic, perusing Ebay the other day I stumbled on some metalflake motorcycle grips:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/661/bxLAei.jpg

I started thinking they might compliment the steering wheel and add another bit of interest to the interior while making the hand brake even more comfortable to operate. They are sold as a pair, one having an I.D. of 7/8” while the other grip is 1” I.D. to account for the brake hardware.

Measuring the adjustable cap on the Orscheln parking brake, I found it to be exactly 7/8” O.D. The grips arrived yesterday and the smaller grip was soon installed. Here’s an earlier shot of the bare handle followed by the metalflake version:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/540/BF1kqT.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/538/4I4sfH.jpg

I was considering cutting the grip shorter to match the length of the brake handle cap, but this proved unnecessary as the lower portion of the grip “floats” over the lower handle shaft. I used the old hairspray trick to slip the grip in place. It slid on nice and easy, and once dry sticks like it was installed with contact cement.

So I now enjoy a full cushioned hand grip on the brake lever while also drawing attention to the non-stock parking brake mechanism.

Excellent. Make sure to include a relay in the electric supply line to the pump, it does make a difference.

Having way too much time on my hands (to say nothing about OCD), I decided the brake handle would look much better without a bicycle streamer hole in the middle.

So I sliced the top off the spare grip, and punched a couple of plugs out of it using a hollow punch. Here's the sacrifice piece with a concaved plug stuck in the middle:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/673/BuzFa5.jpg

And here's the one in the truck with a convex plug inserted:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/909/GMLZuv.jpg

Funny, I just noticed the 4 way flasher ball/knob is perfectly lined up with the inner hole in the right hand steering wheel spoke!
