Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
Thanks for the Pos responses guys.
I'm going this morning to get all the rest of the supplies to get the mold for the driver's side fender going. As soon as I get 2 of the 3 sections made, I can move the driver's side off the table and get the passenger side under way. Senator- Don't sweat it, I got you covered! |

Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
Hey Fellas, Havent forgotten about you guys just been REAL busy.... got separated from wife a couple of months ago and between work and kids i havent had a chance to do much but I started working on my K5 again. Havent been able to do the rest of the motor work that had been planned but was able to put some longer and softer leaf springs on and really noticed how bad I need some of your fenders Mordachai ! I wiil send you some pics when i get a chance but I had to trim a couple of inches of both lower ends, just dont look rite. I know when your doing some serious wheelin your rig isnt going to look like a show truck but if i can keep that cool factory look and it work with my wheelin.... that would be great.

Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
I too was wondering if there's any update on these fenders?
There's a guy in the 67-72 trucks section thinking about bagging instead of going prerunner style if he can't find fiberglass fenders:whine: |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass

Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
hey guys,
Thanks for the comments. Been busy as hell, doing something I would have never ever guessed- yep sewing Auto upholstery. Looked like my job at the shop is secure as long as I could learn to sew... I figure it's just like any other tool/machine - band saw, welder, tractor, sewing machine- it's all the operator! so 2 months later, been doing some full custom jobs and a lot of little repairs. Even did a custom bike seat and some other really cool work! But hasn't left me much time for other things.(such is the way of life I guess) Although the more I do, the faster the pattern making/sewing goes... I actually have gotten a good bit of work done on the fender. I wasn't happy with some of the little edges and curves around the fender lip, so I reworked them. Also spent a good bit of time getting the front trim and edges of the fender straight. Re-painted and sanded smooth etc. A little here and there and the mold(s) are coming underway. I have taken some pics along the way, but haven't even put them on my pc yet. be patient and when I get a chance I'll post some pics. The one thing I really REALLY do need is the front 4"-6" of a 69-72 passenger fender. I started cutting my pass fender to start making the larger lip, and remembered that I still need that front edge.(my pass fender is 67-68 style) Please, if anyone can help me find it will help the process along... Project 67 Sub- I've been talking with a local guy who has a slammed truck, he's tucking 20's in the front. I told him about these fenders I'm making and now he's interested in tucking 22's... When I first started these, I was only thinking of lifted trucks(doh!), but fender clearance is also an issue with the slammed rides... |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
Just remembered these fenders, any progress on them? Seems like you had alot of interest
|
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
heyy was wondering if u could think about pre-runner style fenders for a 58-59' chevy, i know it would be a totally new concept but i have just been inspired by this thread, i have been looking for any type of alternative to cutting on my fenders. thanks

Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
hey everyone.
a little update, after a ton of things not related to this fender at all I've gotten some time here and there. Alot of block sanding, and then even more block sanding... I ended up with something pretty smooth: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5179.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5195.jpg the fender is patchy and multi colored, but smooth as heck. Then it was waxing the fender. Again and again and again. finally got it waxed, got the shims on it, and the PVA release: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5258.jpg and once that dried, I was able to shoot some gelcoat. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5275.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5278.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5303.jpg anyways, just a little update, I guess better than nothing right? I'm a bit farther on that fender now, should have the driver side mold(s) done in a week or so and am already started on the passenger fender. I do need help from the best truck forum anywhere. Please I really need the front edge of a chevy 69-72 fender. What I need looks like this: circled in red: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/frontlip.jpg That pic is just a mirror image of my driver's fender, I need that front edge for the passenger fender( right now I have the 67-68 chevy style pass fender) Want to be the first to get a set of these fenders? Well I need you to help me help you, please I'm willing to pay for the piece, please let me know if you can help out. I've tried the parts boards, but I don't need a full fender, and have had a hard time finding just that piece. I think it's kind of a waste of a good fender when all I need is that little bit. I'm going to go ahead and mold the passenger fender as it sits now, but I won't be able to offer matching 69-72 style fenders until I can make that front edge. Meaning I need a NOS piece to work from. oh yeah- sidenote- I left the upholstery shop to persue my own jobs/work/interests. That means I'm only doing nice full interiors when they come, no repair jobs, which leaves me alot of time to work on these fenders and get back to work on my 71! Please hit me up if you can help me source that fender edge. more pics of progress as they happen. yodi- interesting thought, I've been contacted by someone else to make a pair of widened 56-57 fenders. This from a guy who had seen them widened in metal, and wanted them in glass. if all goes well with these, and there is interest, anything is possible! |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
Good to know you have gone to the darkside! Wish I had a fender for ya! Good luck on that one....
|
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
it would look soo sick if i got some of them fenders with like 6" widening and maybe a little less of a raise in the hight, im trying to prerunner may 59' out and make it one of a kind with a camburg full floating rear end and patch on a 67' front end and lift it, cant wait, donations will be excepted :)

Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
some more pics, before I go back out to prep the next section(s)
first back up layer(s) surfacing veil and some .75 mat http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5306.jpg corners and tight spots filleted in, and 2 layers of .75 http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5314.jpg 2 layers of 1.5 mat http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5355.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5382.jpg gratuitous lay-up pics. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5366.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5367.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5368.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5389.jpg Then I put another 2-4 layers of 1.5 mat on it, focusing on the lip area and flanges/edges http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5399.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5401.jpg |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
then 24 oz combo mat

Do you still need that front edge pass. side piece????? If so, I'll ship one to you. PM me with your address. I want a set of those panels!!! |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
yes, I greatly need that piece, well at least I do in order to have a matching set of fenders to offer...
pm sent I got the driver's side coming along, soon enough I should have a chance to pull the first 'test' part. I'm already doing different tests of different lay-ups, trying to find the strongest, lightest way to make them. I also totally rearranged my workspace- made it easier to work on and move around the stuff. I also got a little better rain protection - I'm basically working outside in a 'car port' type deal. Well half the car port, the other half got taken off during the last hurricanes, so saying that I have better rain protection means alot- no more rigging plastic 'tents' to keep the rain off my workspace. And cleaned up my garage alot, might not look like it, but it's much cleaner... haha and I even used this project as an excuse to buy more tools! lol. http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5257.jpg |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
modified workspace.
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5455.jpg yeah, it's funky, but works for now. clamped the 1st mold section to the fender, and the fender to a horse then cleaned up the sanded fender surface http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5456.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5458.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5462.jpg clay and pva http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5477.jpg gelcoat sprayed http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5490.jpg 1st lay-up of veil, then chop strand and roving in the corners, then 2 layers of .75 mat http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5503.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5501.jpg I've currently got that section finished, prepping the front of the fender- The last part!@!!!@!!!!!! woot!@ I've also started on the passenger, measured and cut off the arch, I cut out, flipped and tacked the marker light at a higher location, and started on the build for the lip... Also I'm doing different test lay-up of different combinations of mat, cloth and cores. I will do tensile, flex(or deflection), and crush tests with them until I find what I think will work the best. I need to get some different resins and epoxies to test as well. So making good progress, I should be able to pull a test fender in the next few weeks, I have to leave the molds on the fender for at least a week, to minimize shrinkage and warping, but it won't be too much longer, and I'll be pulling some panels. |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
Thats awesome man, I can see these becoming a popular alternative when adding larger tires.. I bet if you keep up with these ventures, you can make a good living for yourself. Wouldnt stop here if I were you!!
|
WOOT! 1st fender mold is COMPLETE and in post cure...
^ thanks, And I hope it works out to become more than I ever could dream of, and I'm not stopping anytime soon!
I'm stoked having the time to be able to actually make some real progress! more mat http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5519.jpg 24oz combo cloth http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5542.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5540.jpg glassed in some tubing for extra rigidity http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5544.jpg and then trimmed it up http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5560.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5567.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5569.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...s/IMG_5565.jpg |
last section of 1st mold!!!!!
didn't take as many pics, was more focused on working than taking pics
Front section cleaned, waxed, clayed, and pva. pick of pva ready for gelcoat to be sprayed: http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...IMG_5600-2.jpg some roving in the corners, and veil on the 'flat' spots.(no pic of this, same as other sections though) Then some putty(resin, CS, and balloons) to fillet the corners and tricky tight curves http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...IMG_5628-9.jpg Then built up with mat http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5637-12.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5638-13.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5640-14.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5644-15.jpg then even more http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5646-16.jpg |
Re: Interest for High rise(pre-runner style?) Fenders Fiberglass
and then I got a chance to drill holes and bolt the sections, and did a final trimming of the flanges
http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5653-17.jpg http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5656-18.jpg ^WOOT!^:metal: :ennyd: So that's where that one sits as of now. It's post curing on the fender to minimize shrinkage and warping. I should be able to pull the molds off in another 7-10 days!!!!!:bann: :fb: Working on the pass, got the light cut out, flipped 1" higher, and welded back in, starting on creating the lip. shouldn't be much longer and it'll be coming together(although I'm not looking forward to all the hand block sanding ahead of me- but that's ok) Man, my passenger fender was so banged up it's not right. Air hammer and a ball peen were banged and banged until I got the front of the fender to have some normal shape back. (why do people pile on the filler- when they could just hammer out the dents a little and use 1/2 or less filler? always amazes me) I had a hell of a time trying to hammer the sheetmetal around the light flat enough to get it back in place nicely. Actually there is a slight compound curve- it's not dead flat- so it took alot of hammer/dolly work to get it where they would even remotely fit. If I were to actually try to use it, I would have trashed it for another, but for making the model/plug it'll be fine. My metalwork is much less ideal than I'd like, but a little filler in the low spots and it should be fine. Almost hard to see in the pic, I guess because the grinding kind of made the surface look more uniform, but the whole front of the fender had about and inch plus of filler!!!! yikes! only pic I got right now... lip cut off, rusty nasty missing cup cut off, light flipped(raised 1") and welded, alot of hammer and dolly work... http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b6...MG_5632-10.jpg |
