Looking good Tim. I have a couple questions for you.

I recently picked up a wood bed for my project and want to paint the wood like you did and use either the stock strips powder coated like you or get the stainless ones from Mar-K. They are where I am going to get the wood. I have not seen any negatives from them other maybe the cost. but I don't have time to cut my own.

What wood did you go with? Oak or Pine?

What primer and paint did you use on the wood?

Did you powder coat the rear bed rail that was once tack welded to the sides? and if so how are you replacing the welds? or are you not?

Keep it up the truck is looking great!!!

Scott

i used Mar-K wood, strips, and hardware. the shipping was expensive, but in my opinion well worth it the way all the parts fit together. every bolt hole aligned perfectly with no massaging required. i used OEM bedsides, tubs, braces, header panel...

pine wood since i didn't care about wood color. pretty good quality, and kiln dried.

i read the Mar-K test reports on their website and used 2 coats of POR-15 as a primer and then 2 coats of BEHR exterior latex for topcoat. i brushed everything on.

i powdercoated the bed supports. i ground off the PC in the weld area, and plan on tack welding at the factory locations and then touching up with POR (it is a high gloss black and hardens similar to PC). i'm going to do the welding last after i verify tailgate fitment.

one thing i recommend if going with this coating method is mockup the wood sections around the wheel tubs and mark/drill prior to coating. the POR dries VERY hard. i drilled the holes after coating and the bit splintered the wood around the holes. those areas get covered up, but still...

Awesome truck build. I was looking to put 20's on mine and drop it but now I think i will go with 15's. I read the posts but didn't seem to find the info on the Drop, tires, and backspacing used. Do you mind reposting that?

Thanks, Jeff

very soon i'll be cleaning up the engine compartment. going to hide as much as i can without doing any cutting or welding. battery will go under the bed. i have a friend who is going to fabricate me a plate similar to the factory heater delete plates that will fit the a/c firewall.

here's the look i'm going for. black engine bay, probably semi-gloss. not sure on the air cleaner just yet...

started into the front end. my 8-year old expressed a serious interest in helping me on the truck for the first time. he did most of the disassembly. it was a pretty cool moment! the plan is to p-coat the core support, inner fenders, and a few other parts black.

also just bought one of the high hump original GM floor mats on ebay that a forum member shared. excited to see how it fits.

it's been a slow couple months. crazy job. busy summer. trying to get back to the front end. got a bunch of parts back from powdercoating. blasted the core support and inner fenders, working out some dings and dents.

found this on the core support. not sure what it means. also not sure why i posted it. seemed weird. it's midnight and i'm tired...

added a speed warning setup to my choke delete cluster today too. plan on adding a tach at some point too if/when i can find a deal on the right parts.

Been too busy for the last few months to mess with the truck, but last night I had a work get together at my house and took advantage of having a few co-workers that could help me throw the finished bed back onto the truck. That gave me a little inspiration.

Just a few more tweaks to the wiring harness and then reinstall the bumper and tailgate and the back end of the truck will be done. I installed rubber pads between the bed and frame (1/4" I think), and looking at the body lines I think I'll need to install new cab mounts to true it up.

Gotta love OEM parts. The bed I removed was a steel floor. I used cross braces and header panel from a donor wood floor bed. The clearances between the tires and the wheel wells are still 5/8" each, exactly what they were before the steel bed came off. Whew! :smoke:
