Excellent progress. The trans crossmember and exhaust work is awesome.

Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
Nice Progress. I need to build me a frame table like yours.

It sure helps keep everything straight and true. Can not imagine how difficult it would be to do this build on jack stands. My old broken down body would just quit. |

Gregs' engine is alive. You tube video from the engine builder

Nice. Big blocks are heavy but they sure make good power.

Very nice fab work. As someone who is currently in the throes of a shop build, I agree, the planning and trying to see into the future is almost more work than building the dang thing!

couple small up dates.
The engine was shipped to us last Tuesday and should arrive middle of next week. We sprayed the cab with primer as it was developing surface rust since we media blasted it. The frame is very close to being shipped out to powder coat. Attachment 1712252 Attachment 1712253 Attachment 1712254 Attachment 1712255 Attachment 1712256 |

Best advice I could offer are build a frame rack, it has simplified and increased the accuracy of our build further then any other component so far. |

Looking back, Whose rotisserie did you purchase that you are using for the cab?

This weekend was exciting. Greg and I needed to get the bed mounted for mock up. So we did that.

Exhaust was finalized

The work on the frame looks so good I would hate to cover it up...lol

I sure hope we can continue to build the rest of the truck to the standards we have achieved so far. We are pretty decent fabricating, niether of us have any experience at all when it comes to paint and body work. |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
WOW .....outstanding work, this is a dream truck for many of us im sure.

Greg's truck took a turn in both design and equipment this week. When the motor builder sent us the dyno information we humbly realized we had a weak link in the build. The 700R4. The little GM automatic was just not going to be able to withstand the abuse Greg will be inflicting to it. So the 4L80E stepped up to the plate and dropped its resume on our white board. Yea it is more then capable of the task so we called the Transmission shop and canceled the build on the 700, and ordered it's built up big brother.
The fly in this ointment is the new transmission isl a lot bigger. It is wider, it is taller and to our horror it is ten inches longer. Our Transmission cross member and its associated tabs on the frame are toast. That is just a matter of fabrication and we are fine with that, but the real tragedy is the crossover pipe on the exhaust system that had run behind the the trans mount would now be in front of it and the trans would be above it. That was going to make me hang myself. I have close to 40 hours alone just building this exhaust focusing on keeping everything above the frame bottom. Here is a picture of the previous set up Attachment 1715972 nice and cozy and the distance of the crossover in relation to the header collector was optimum. So with tears in our eyes we grabbed the mock up block bolted to the new 4L80 mock up transmission and lowered it back into the frame to see just how bad this situation was. Attachment 1715973 How is this possible? How could the build Gods be so kind? :metal: Attachment 1715978 Attachment 1715977 Sorry had to edit as I mislabeled this as a 4L60 when as I was correctly scolded, it is in fact the 4L80e |

So, upward and onward right?
Finish the frame boxing Front. Attachment 1715980 and rear Attachment 1715981 That concluded a weekend of turmoil and success. |
Re: Two is easier then one 1965 GMC S/W/BB build
I see that you typed 4l60e for the transmission that you are switching too. But the picture of the new mock up trans is a 4l80e. Just a typo since the 4l60e is just the evolution of the 700r4 and the 4l80e is the big brother...
Nice to see that your fab work was not all for nothing. Looks like your exhaust fits well. |

So full assembly starts now to confirm everything will fit. so we need to put this thing back to together minus plumbing and electrical.
So this is a start. Attachment 1716261 Attachment 1716262 Attachment 1716263 Attachment 1716264 Attachment 1716265 |
