And it's 23 years old. When I need a new fuel/oil cap or bar nut, the shop acts like I have an antique  I think my old 045 would still run but it got the ethanol sickness. Don't know if there's even parts anymore...? Long time ago there was a Stihl TV ad (in Alaska, anyway): "I ran over my new Stihl saw with a truck, and I broke the truck!" |

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I had an old XL when they were blue. It shook so hard that the handle screws would come loose and jump out and I would catch it while I was cutting.
I think it was a 330 that I bought brand new. I used it about three months in Alaska before something came apart under the flywheel. I got it fixed but it wouldn't run at all at over 10K' ASL in Colorado. For that matter, neither would the Huskies of that era. They would run about ten minutes and then you would have to let them cool off a while. Stihl had the isolated carb so it wouldn't vapor lock. Then I had two 045's that I ran for years. Always need a spare when you're 50-60 miles from town. I got talked into modernizing and bought an 044. It did okay until I blew it up on a hundred degree day in Montana. So then I bought the 046 and stihl running it today. But I only used it professionally about six months. Stihl don't like cold weather though. You have to work them really hard to keep them up to operating temperature in the winter. Firewood cutting is okay but falling/limbing they start to sputter. If I was timber falling again, I would run Stihl in the summer and Husky in the winter. Trouble is they don't use the same bars so you have to duplicate everything :( Doesn't matter since most all jobs is feller-buncher anymore. Sit in a cab and push buttons and look at a computer screen. |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Stihl ms290 for me, damn good saw with both an 18” and 20” bar.
I though I was serious about my firewood before these last few posts! Nice work! |

I've been working on my 20' x 40' lean-to hot and heavy since the wind storm damaged my barn. Here's a few pictures of the lean-to and the damage to the main support posts in my barn. All 8 of the main support posts are either broken or cracked. I'm not sure whats keeping it up. I thought I would include a picture of the "other" truck with my locally sawn, full dimension 2x8 rafters and 2x4 purlins. They are all from reclaimed power poles. I am now ready for the sheet metal roof. The '72 Dually has been earning her keep on this one.....:) LockDoc |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
So the lean-to is holding up your barn?
I cut another load of wood this morning. Having coffee and a snack right now and planning to go cut another load while I'm dressed for it. |

I never thought about building the lean-to on the East side of the barn instead of the shop, to prop it up....:) LockDoc |

Going to have to put on the the weight distribution bars the hitch is in the grass . Didnt expect to have this much weight. Only going up my driveway so ya its overloaded

But it's 100% electric. 48 volts. There 2 batteries in front of the rear axle and the 4 behind it. 8 volts. Runs 28 MPH and later this winter I hope to have it up a little faster.:chevy: |

I got the grass clipped behind the house for the last time this year. All this talk of chainsaws reminded me that as it cools off I need to thin the oak saplings and buck up the deadfalls.

How are the brakes??? :ack: That thing looks cool in pictures but It has to be a gas (er, volt) to drive. I'd like to see a video... hint hint.
I've just been poking around the place. Moving things out of the shed or over to the far side so now I can start digging out for concrete. I did a little more concrete work on those steps at the garage, and built some shelves inside it. Moving the barn over has been a thought circling around for a long time. A burden really, with needing a solution for that tree situation, other than expensive crane work to cut it down. I'm liking the thought of the big old tree staying since such an old house seems like it should have at least one big old tree somewhere. Maple limbs can be cut way back and they still sprout out a nice canopy. But trimming is for later (I have a climber who works cheap). Right now I'm happy to have confirmed a plan and moving one with it. The shakes are bad to where they are leaking at the bottom, and now the board & batten is rotting at the bottom. I couldn't let it wait any longer. As it is now, due to the tree, I have to climb through the fence to access that patch of property to even look at that side of the barn. So I hadn't seen the rot until this weekend. I knew the soffit and fascia were bad. No wonder it's so damp in there. I don't have a place to put everything in the barn while this happens. But I've been all through it, moved a lot out to elsewhere, got rid of some things, seen every inch of floor again after many years, cleaned, and organized. I have things up top to get rid of and other things to move elsewhere on the property still. It's inch by inch and a real challenge with where to move what to where. I have room to do what I need to prep for moving and when it comes time to move it I'll just have to move some things onto the slab outside and tarp it. It's been overwhelming to think about, but now that it's in motion I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I’ve got sort of the Prius of chainsaws - an electric Stihl :)
I’ve been holding off to trim some oaks until it’s safe to do so in terms of oak wilt. |

I stopped at a city park and rode my bicycle 5 miles after lunch. One 1/4 mile stretch is extremely steep.
I need to do that more often. |

But I've got a little folding "pull" saw that I can stick in my hip pocket that works fairly well, at least until the "battery" runs down ;) |

I used to go tent camping by myself in my work truck, with my work saw in the toolbox. I didn't need to cut much campfire wood but one time the road to my favorite spot was blocked by a huge tree fallen down. So I just got out my trusty Stihl and cut it a couple places and dragged the log out of the way with a chain and my 2wd pickup. Just another day in the life ;) |

Went to the hand surgen. Going to have to have surgery for the Dupuytren's contracture I have in my right hand. Had the shot last year with mixed results, worked for about 6 months but came back a even more aggressive. Surgery is December 2nd with pt afterwards.

Today ... I drove three hours round trip to get a flat tire fixed. Well, I do like living out away from people ;) |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I took my wifes car in for a new tire. I pumped up the old one and made it to the shop. My buddy was supposed to follow me in my 71 and drive me home.
So I drop the car off. Go out and look for my truck...No truck in sight. I'm thinking, this is not good. So I start walking. I get about half way home and see my buddy walking towards me. Okay now I know this is not good. He says. The truck broke down. It's in the middle of the road in front of your house. Which I guess is good because I live on a cul de sac with one other house on it. So I walk. (Uphill) and there's my truck right in the middle of the road. So now after walking up this hill I've got to figure out how to get this truck out of the road. So I get the keys from my friend. He's getting older and he's kind of losing it. He told me it wouldn't even crank. So I went to check. Turns out he still had it in drive. I put it park and it cranked but it was like it was out of gas. Probably because it was. My gas gauge crapped on me. It showed a half a tank. But I got it to fire up long enough to get it back in my yard. I figure I'll replace the fuel pump. I have had troubles with it on hills. And I live in the hills. And fix the gas gauge. And I had to chase my dog. He was chasing my neighbors cat. I'm just lucky he listens to me when I tell him to stop and sit. I would never be able to catch him. So. I got my exercise today. :smoke: |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
Today my plans are to work a bit, maybe go to the gym at lunchtime, and pick up the stuff to change the oil in my father in laws car. My wife has decided she cannot part with it just yet so we are going to keep it for a while as the "extra" ride. 2012 Impala LTZ so it's not like it's a beater or something. Needs to go to the tire shop as well as I think at least one tire is out of balance. May just have them replaced as they are getting close to needing it.
Planning on going to the fall swap meet and car show on Petite Jean mountain tomorrow since the weather looks perfect for it. On the electric saw front I can say I got a batter powered pole saw over a year ago and that thing is the bomb. It will cut for about two hours and that's usually enough trimming to give me another two hours of cleanup. Wife got a battery powered string trimmer as he doesn't like my straight shaft Stihl. She usually just does the mowing and I do the trimming but sometimes she beats me to it. |
Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
I guess I'll post what I did Wednesday here. I made mention in an old post brought back, but doubt many have looked. Last week I was contacted by Chevyland, said he would be in Washington, DC and have a day free. So that was day before yesterday and he slipped on up to my place. We hopped in the rental car and took a tour of the countryside. Had lunch at Chubby's, a BBQ joint. I'd say it was just pretty decent that day, but still yummy. That town is right at the PA line and not far from Gettysburg. So we rode up there, went through town, and checked out the battlefield a little bit. took another route out of town toward the mountain (north end of the blue Ridge) and explored a bit more, ended up at a place called high rock, a high rock (go figure) outcropping with a view of the Appalachian Valley on over to the Appalachians. A pretty clear day, just a little haze on the horizon. Then we made our way back to my place for a bit before he headed back to his wife, who was the one who had business in DC. It was a great change of pace for me to have a visitor from afar. Eric was a pleasure to meet and spend the day with. Pretty much just what I expected, too. Like hanging with an old friend. It was a good day

I've always enjoy my visits with Eric too.

Re: What did you do today not on your truck...
My wife went out of town overnight for a seminar. She left me a list of things to do.
The minute she left I threw the list away and went and bought some beer. The single life. Got to love it. Then I came up with my own list... Of excuses of why I got nothing done. |
