Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Alright, well not a whole lot has been going on. School is finally out for the summer so I am picking up some more hours so I can get this thing finally rolling and get it done by the end of summer.
Been thinking a lot about paint and have decided that I am going to go with white. Also got the transmission hump finally installed in the truck. So now I am working on all the rust that I have so that I can finally start on the body work. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0385.jpg http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0382.jpg Basically what I did was to make the transmission hump to weld into the truck, I then cut a 1/2 inch section all the way around to make the mounting frame, I welded tabs to the back of this 1/2 inch section to be where the hump bolted to and also be able to put some sealer on it to keep water from coming up through the hump. I then welded the 1/2 inch section to the floor and it bolts right in! |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
White's a good color choice man! With mine hopefully that'll be two on the roads again soon!

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Things are moving pretty slow. I did pick up a 86 reg cab long bed frame that had the correct core/front spring mounts for this truck so I am going to be swaping out the brackets at some point so that I can use all the same bushings.
I started on rust repair. The rockers where rusty in only some places, When I cut them open I saw some surface rust, but I sprayed a rust converter on them to keep it from going any farther. http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0394.jpg Patched the passenger front rocker http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0395.jpg Just need to finish patching the rust. Fill in some holes in the cab for moldings, grind it all down, power wash one more time, paint the bottom/firewall black, and then start doing the body work on the rest of the cab. Once it is in primer I am going to be getting everything else in primer and then start the real body work on everything. Plan was to get it done by summer, but things keep popping up so we will just see. No real dead line, Just hope to get it done at some point, I already have plans for my rusted out crew cab cab, mud/rock truck :D |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well not much to really update. Been doing a lot of cutting, welding, and grinding fixing rust and all of that. I will be putting the cab in primer in the morning.
I did end up picking up a turbo setup for the 6.2. Its all of of a 6.5 and the turbo is a GM-8. I want to put it on, but I am just not sure yet. I have to modify the A/C box or get a S10 box, but I am not sure about all of that just yet. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well Saturday morning I got up early when it was cooler and sprayed some primer on the cab. I do not have the cab floor primed yet because I will be drilling and welding on the floor to install the suburban bucket seats that I bought.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0404.jpg Once I get the cab fully covered in primer I need to finish up some things on my frame so that I can get the cab on it and then start putting all the other body parts in primer. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
comming along nicely

I did get the cab onto the frame, and am really close to putting the final layer of primer on. Then hoping to get paint on the front clip and cab soon. I am just going to run my doors black for now as I have some big dents that I can not fix in the doors so I will need to find some new doors. As for the bed. I am still debating the Dually vs single wheel. So the dually bed will kind of be on hold while i drive it around some to make sure that I want a dually. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
duallys are the coolest

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well the day has came. I finally sprayed some white onto the truck! Friday when I went to get the paint I told them that I needed the chevy code 12 white, which I was told was the white that they use on these trucks. Went to open the can to spray it and it was more of a cream color. So I took it back and they fixed it for me. So now I am using Olympic white. I only got the cab in paint for now. The rest of the front clip will be getting painted soon. I need to find some drivers side doors for my truck as well.

I am going to try to get the front clip finished up in paint tomorrow night. I did find some doors that seem to be in good shape. So I might go pick them up this week. Then I am going to try to get most of the stuff back on the truck so I can get it running. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
It looks great Matt! Did you spray the back of the cab too, any orange peel?
The SPID in my step brothers 86 gmc said it was "Frost White", just a little info. |

Yes I sprayed the back of the cab, everything got sprayed but the firewall and the bottom side of the cab. There is orange peel, but I think I am going to leave it. It really is kinda hard to see it. There are also some places that dirt got into the paint, but they are kind of hard to see as well. In all I am happy with how the cab came out, but its definitely not show truck quality, but i intend to drive this truck everyday. As for the white, they had several paint markers for fixing scratches and the guy showed me all of the GM whites and Olympic White seemed to be the best looking white out of all of them. it is a very bright white. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I have been putting the wiring back into the cab and decided to finish painting the front clip. I went ahead and put one fender on just to see what it looks like.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0434.jpg Need to pull the hydro boost off of the other cab and then start hooking things up and I should be able to fire it up before to long. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Awesome dude!

I have to figure out what to do with my hydro-boost, it is leaking and I am not sure where to get a rebuild kit, and a remanufactured is $175. |

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I went ahead and replaced the hydro-boost unit, and rebuilt the steering box, and got the steering all hooked up. I got the brakes bled, steering installed, and the clutch working. Now all I need to do is finalize the radiator mount, tighten a lot of suspension bolts, add some oil, anti-freeze/water, and buy some batteries and then I should be able to fire it up. I am still fighting the SRW or DRW option, but for now I am just going to throw my dually bed on and run it that way. I wont have all the paint done yet, but I should be getting it close to road worthy soon.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Definitely go dually. Love the white, too!

Oh, shoot, I did and I forgot to reply to you. I will later man.

Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well put the front clip on the truck yesterday and found out that somehow when I put the correct 86 front core support/spring mounts that they are mounted to far back so I am going to have to fix that.
I did however hook up a battery and was able to fire it up with the one battery. I need to get another one but I just wanted to make sure everything was working. I need to add some anti-freeze in the cooling system and then I will fire it up again and try and drive it around. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Well I have been working a lot on the truck. I have been trying to get the truck on the road because I think I am going to be changing the direction of this build once again.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u...b/IMG_0447.jpg I have not gotten around to painting the doors or the bed and tailgate. I should be getting the truck tagged this week, and hopefully get my windshield and back window installed and then I am going to throw the bed on it and some other things. Now you might be asking, how am I going to be changing the direction of the build. Well After driving this around the farm for a while testing things I have noticed that the turning radius is very large. I am wanting to be able to drive this truck daily, so I am going to be converting my 3/4 ton crew cab frame into a short bed single wheel frame and swap the cab and front clip over to that frame. I want to be able to drive this truck all the time and with it being so long and so wide I don't see that being very good for DD duty. Once I get the short bed built I will probably find another cab to go ahead and build me a crew cab long bed dually on this frame. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
It looks good man!
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Thanks Bub! It almost makes me want to keep it a dually. Ill just have to see how it is when i get the bed on it.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab

Got the bed on it. I started to get clutch problems. It seems as if my master cylinder for the clutch doesn't work right. So I bought a new master and slave cylinder so I hope I can get the bled some time soon and it works right. |
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Nice! Are you going to try to put the windows in yourself? Its not too hard, it just takes some time and patience.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
My windshield is broke so I am going to get a new one. I am going to go ahead and install the old windows back in, but my trim rings all broke in pieces and so I would need new ones (Not sure where to get them). Then when I get a new windshield Ill just have them install it.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Great work Matt! It's coming together. It's good to be able to move it around for sure. These things get hard to push around all the time.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
Yes they do suck to push around all the time. As you can see there is a 30 ft pontoon boat behind my truck. This summer when my uncle wanted his boat I would have to push the truck out of the way. What you dont see is the hill that leads down to the shop that you have to push the truck up haha.
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
You have a tractor...
|
Re: 85 GMC Sierra Classic 1 Ton Crew Cab
I actually used my k10 to pull it, the part that sucked was when the brakes and steering was not hooked up and you had to turn the tires by hand, and pushing it back into the shop without brakes sucked because you had to keep it from rolling down the hill into the shop to fast.
